They have Hawaiian and Oceanic art that are both old and new. You can spend hours looking at each piece in detail. Many of the pieces have amazing stories behind them and the newer ones are from local Hawaiian artist and craftsman. The staff member I spoke to was kind and let me roam freely while explaining which items were made locally. Overall I think that if you want to take home a souvenir that's authentic, beautiful and with great meaning, this is a place to check out and buy from.

With that in mind, you gotta respect the artist that engages a neophyte like me. We were simply strolling around window shopping and saw the artist/gallery owner Max painting outside. He warmly greeted us and we soon engaged in some funny repartee. He did not hover over us as we walked through the gallery, which I really appreciated. We ended up buying two prints - one a landscape and one a more abstract painting. Max took the time to explain how he makes the art and also agreed to ship it to us for free. One week later, the prints arrived on our Virginia doorstep. I wish all gallery experiences were as good as this one.

On the second Sunday each month there's an arts & craft fair with food vendors and live music. Hubby enjoyed going into the Ace Hardware store. Two places we did takeout - Sandwich Isle and Lotus Garden Thai and Chinese. There's an outdoor food court and nearby a public library and a bank. Heads up - avoid going to Foodland during dinner hour. Everyone has the same idea. Long times. We liked the poke. But the prepared food was primarily fried food. Ample outdoor parking.

While my friends went into their favorite vintage shop, the Yellowfish Trading Company, I walked the grounds and just took in the magic of these mountains and surrounding valley. Lush, green, clouds, flowers - heaven! Unlike most shopping centers, Hanalei Center is comprised of separate little shops, many in historical buildings that have been refurbished. It's a mix of shops offering something for everyone: clothes, surfer gear, shoes, jewelry, chocolates, art, bars, and several restaurants. Most are locally owned and sell items that are locally produced. You must stop at Chocolate Hanalei, a tiny chocolatier that has the most amazing chocolates! All handmade and many include fruit from the region. My favorites are the dark chocolate covered mango and dark chocolate covered baby bananas. Delicious! We also stopped at the bar that was featured in Deliverence and had Mai Tais. A must stop. This shopping center is geared to tourists, and I was a tourist, so I totally enjoyed it! I loved walking from shop to shop, appreciating all the flowers and foliage along the way. Sampling food and drinks, buying treasures, it is so quaint and charming!
