On my first trip to Kauai, my friends took me to this quant shopping center in Hanalei. We parked in the parking lot at the base of the Hanalei Mountains and the view took my breath away. While my friends went into their favorite vintage shop, the Yellowfish Trading Company, I walked the grounds and just took in the magic of these mountains and surrounding valley. Lush, green, clouds, flowers - heaven! Unlike most shopping centers, Hanalei Center is comprised of separate little shops, many in historical buildings that have been refurbished. It's a mix of shops offering something for everyone: clothes, surfer gear, shoes, jewelry, chocolates, art, bars, and several restaurants. Most are locally owned and sell items that are locally produced. You must stop at Chocolate Hanalei, a tiny chocolatier that has the most amazing chocolates! All handmade and many include fruit from the region. My favorites are the dark chocolate covered mango and dark chocolate covered baby bananas. Delicious! We also stopped at the bar that was featured in Deliverence and had Mai Tais. A must stop. This shopping center is geared to tourists, and I was a tourist, so I totally enjoyed it! I loved walking from shop to shop, appreciating all the flowers and foliage along the way. Sampling food and drinks, buying treasures, it is so quaint and charming! read more

The Hanalei Center is located in the heart of Hanalei town, which is established from the repurposed historic Old Hanalei School. It offers activities for shopping and dining, and it's difficult to make reservations for popular restaurants, and there's limited parking at the small lot attached. read more

Thanks to my friend and fellow Yelper, Guylyn L., we got to experience Hanalei town along with this "mall". ATMOSPHERE: The Hanalei Center is now what was once the Old Hanalei School, so the layout is as such, with shops and businesses taking the spots of former classrooms. Being an old-style Hawaii school, it's a single level concrete building raised a few steps up from the Earth and solid as a rock. I'm not exactly sure where the property ends as there was no boundary line, but several newer buildings were added and blended within the property, adding even more shops and restaurants. Facing the property, parking is to the left on a gravel lot. The tenant list was a mix of surf and clothing shops, a few eateries including the Hanalei Gourmet restaurant and an art gallery. There are several covered picnic tables on the lawn fronting the property. TIP: Park somewhere and walk around the town. While it's not 100% pedestrian friendly, the town is small enough to see on foot and you won't have to constantly look for parking. OVERALL: Quaint, support local, not a shopper's paradise. read more

It's a tiny little building with a handful of shops selling small gifts and souvenirs. However the back of the center there is this nice restaurant that set up the patio facing the valley with so many waterfalls, the view is breathtaking. read more

I would give the shopping center itself no more than 2 or 3 stars. It's basically just another tourist stop. There are the usual gift shops, small eateries, and an art gallery -- nothing out of the ordinary. I can definitely think of better ways to spend time on Kauai. However, the reason I am giving this place 4 stars is that the parking lot in back has one of the most incredible views I have ever seen, a really stunning close-up view of the Hanalei mountains. You can get a great view of these mountains from the Princeville St. Regis and some of the surrounding resort properties as well, but the commercialized hotel glitz and crowds of tourists detract somewhat from the experience, I think. Here, you can feel the enormous CENTERING power of those mountains, their magic and mystery, in a much more direct way. One of my favorite spots in the world. read more
