It's good to know, even with small shopping centers in certain areas, it still doesn't take away the beauty and lushness of the mountains, trees, and the ocean. This shopping center carries the necessities and some luxuries if you choose to partake. Some of the shops: Safeway-pick up some groceries and snacks Starbucks-morning coffee Health food store-pick up something healthy to eat and try their sample tastings Abc stores-tourist souvenirs Subway-sandwich to go-for the beach Jewelry store-something for yourself or lover Stop by and take a look for yourself! It's coveniently located close to where I stayed. :)

They have a good mix of completely predictable chains (so that you don't lose your mind from trying all new things) to locally owned businesses (so you don't lose your soul from selling out to the corporate machines.) We got lunch at Subway, stopped in at Starbucks, ABC Store and Ross. Yes, we are total corporate chain sell outs and I am completely ashamed of myself. Tomorrow I make the commitment to buy my coffee from a local hipster coffee shop that only single origin pour overs from a responsible fair trade grower, buy all my produce from a farmers market, go to Goodwill and buy used clothing so I create less waste, and get my takeout from a mom 'n pop restaurant who sources 40% of their product from local organic growers. Who am I kidding? I'll just start with the coffee and we'll see how it goes from there...

Pit stop on the Island of Kauai…read more.. On the way to the Kilauea Lighthouse (on the North Shore of Kauai), my penpal pointed out this landmark. I didn't realize how important it would be later on... Kong Lung Market Center has historic significance to this part of the island. It is about a 40 minute drive from the Lihue Airport...and a longer drive with traffic (especially because many roads are only one lane wide). After visiting the Kilauea Lighthouse, my penpal mentioned Kong Lung Market Center again and pulled into the parking lot. We walked past several vendors and shops (which weren't open yet since it was early morning). Arriving at the one stalled restroom, we took turns using the facility. It's not air conditioned, but it has restroom tissue! I had to be careful where I stepped because previous customers left the floor "wet"... Uhg! At least there was a sink outside - with soap! Yay! I liked this Market Center! I'll read up on its history later! I highly recommend stopping here when you are in Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii! There's also a noteworthy exhibit about Hawaii's Plantation Life!

On the second Sunday each month there's an arts & craft fair with food vendors and live music. Hubby enjoyed going into the Ace Hardware store. Two places we did takeout - Sandwich Isle and Lotus Garden Thai and Chinese. There's an outdoor food court and nearby a public library and a bank. Heads up - avoid going to Foodland during dinner hour. Everyone has the same idea. Long times. We liked the poke. But the prepared food was primarily fried food. Ample outdoor parking.

We walked into Big Saves supermarket and spied some local grindz. We decided to eat at the Village Snack Shop & Bakery and JoJo Shaved Ice. It wasn't until later that I read the history on Ching Young Village. Founded by early Chinese immigrants with a mercantile store and rice mill, The Village has evolved over time and still own and operated by descendants. It gave me a better appreciation for the footprint.

Parking is open and spacious, as with most other Kauai shopping areas, none are covered stalls. Safeway, Chevron, Uncle's, Panda Express, Petco, Supercuts, Verizon and Subway were the only open businesses I saw. Potential is there! Can't wait to see what shops fill the still vacant spaces!
