This is an AWESOME space. They have a big area upstairs with tons of room to play tabletop and card-based games. Naiche is awesome and very knowledgeable. I've been here twice already and been met only with kindness from everyone here. I am visibly queer, so it is important to me to find safe spaces to hang out with other nerds! They have multiple open play nights each week and an entire section of their store is dedicated to Warhammer, which is a huge plus! This place is gamer heaven! The selection is amazing, they carry an awesome selection of board and miniature games as well as secondhand miniatures, as well as some locally sourced gaming accessories like dice trays. When I purchased a new wet pallet and realized there were no sheets included by mistake (manufacturer error), I purchased a refill pack from the store and informed them of the error, and they refunded the order as a customer service gesture! Recently started being able to come here more often now that they've moved so much closer to me (used to be in the valley) and now I'm going regularly to keep feeding my newfound love of painting minis! The staff is always friendly and willing to answer questions as well as willing to explain differences between paints and uses for different brushes. My favorite game store in town for anything wargaming related. It's in a beautiful location, well laid out, with a VERY knowledgable staff. I love their used case of miniatures, letting you buy a lot of stuff you may need for half price. The building seemed small, and unassuming from the outside. Posters, and markings in the windows indicating the plethora of games and events that the store supported. While I try not to judge a book by its cover, I certainly didn't realize what I'd be stepping into. I've imagined it must be like stepping into the Tardis. Seems small, and unassuming on the outside, but expansive, and immersive on the inside. Walls lined with various figures and bits ranging from the common to the rare. Ultimately, in spite of the massive amount of games (I even learned to play Super Dungeon Explore), or the extensive effort that's put into an amazing play-space... the people are what made the experience worthwhile. Want to learn a game? They'll give you the rundown. Have some old Magic cards to sell? They'll explain the value and give you the options they can provide. Wanna play a game against the person who consistently rolls poorly? Bob's typically available, and always ready to show off his reliably poor dice rolling. These folks have brought together a community. Groups of individuals who often don't know how to interact with people, come out of their shells and become open. Opportunities to meet some fantastic individuals that would be lost elsewhere. Beyond making a sale or offering a product, there is a community of gamers who are willing to offer games, advice, trades, laughs, and friendship. I'm an unashamed gamer. Yet my family hardly knows much more about the games I play, than how to roll dice. Still, when birthdays/holidays come around, I can send them to The Gamer's Haven, confident in the knowledge that whatever they find me will be well worth the trip. Frankly, you can get most of this stuff online, or from a big-box-store at a discounted price. Good inventory of standard variety, including minis, cards games, and roleplaying. Excellent space for groups. I had a bad experience with the storefront. I called ahead to check availability for my item-- in stock, good so far. The rep introduced himself as Bob. Sounded friendly and helpful. I'm pumped. I can brave the world for a short while then retreat again to solitude and safety with new loot. I'm just a few minutes away, so I take off excited for my purchase. I arrive with a couple of other customers just behind me. I ask Bob for directions. He remembers me from the phone call. Item is 5 steps away in the corner. I pick it up, and head directly back to the register, standing a polite distance away from the other customers. As expected of a great business, he has greeted his other patrons and is now talking to them about the card game Magic, which I am guessing they indicated some interest in--no problem. He is talking about some new additions to the game. He seems really excited for this, and what it means for his business (Bob sounds like the owner now). This guy is working a sale, alright? I'm thinking, this is the part where he pulls down some packs and snags that assumptive close... Nope. Just keeps on chatting, and now I realize he is just chatting. I check the time. I check if there are other open game stores nearby. No luck. Bob is now talking about the future state of the game and compares it to the arms race that was Yugioh. Sounds like Yugioh was so focused on the new arrivals that the entire experience lost its meaning. I've been standing there for maybe only five minutes, but I've done the whole rollercoaster of purchase anxiety. Or so I thought. I put my item back in the shelf and head for the exit. I'll just buy online. Bob sees me halfway out the door and calls out, offering to ring me up. I should have kept going, but I'm a forgiving person, these are my people, and I want my new toy, 10 minutes ago. Bob is still friendly and apologetic, saying something like "We're a community, you see, this is what we do, we just shoot the breeze." Well, I'm quiet, I say "No problem, I understand" because I do. I consider myself a part of that community. I get excited about my hobbies and I like to share that. I understand you bro, but you're running a business and I was also your customer. You remembered me and knew exactly what I was buying. Now I'm checking out and all I can think of is that he has mentally labelled me an outsider to whom he needed to explain that his "community" will just do this sometimes. Somehow, I am Other. He tried to make some small talk as the card was swiping, but now I'm deep in my shell. I left politely, only $16 dollars lighter, and let Bob return to his conversation. Gamer's Haven is the first hobby store where I suddenly felt like a duck out of water. Cast out by my tribe. Definitely did not earn its name with me. read more
