Went there for the first time two weeks ago after living in Manhattan for twenty three years. It was so good the first time we went back the following weekend! There homemade bread is amazing and was so good I bought a loaf to take home. At $12 it's a bit pricey but well worth the price. Both times we went the service was excellent, our food came out really quick and the atmosphere is like an old time mom and pop diner. I went there for lunch and ordered the 3-piece Chicken Strip Basket with French Fries with a side of Ranch Dressing. It was very good. The service was quick, and we had our order within five minutes. The diner is small but is old fashioned, quiet and clean. read more

We stopped through town just to take a quick walk down the Yellow Brick Road alley. As we were heading back to our car, a family came out of the restaurant and the kids were talking about it being good. It was close to lunch time so we decided to ahead and stop in. It was probably around 11am when we got there, so the breakfast crowd was kind of leaving and the after-church people hadn't gotten there yet so it wasn't very busy at all. We decided to both order taco salad and we were both so pleased. Of course, it came with something like Pace Picante sauce, but if you overlook that, the rest was really tasty. The hamburger/taco meat was so flavorful. We really ate every last bite. We had attentive service too. The temperature in the place was a little chilly, but I'm sure the fact that there weren't many patrons there at the moment made it cooler. read more

This was a great little stop after the Oz Museum. Just follow the yellow brick road. We were going to sit at the picnic tables, because we have a dog, but we're invited to sit on the front porch instead. Very pleasant. Just like eating on Grandma's porch. The food was delicious. I had the brisket sandwich and salad. Loved the bun. My husband had the cheeseburger. It was good and plentiful. We also purchased items from the bakery. All were delicious. read more

Cafe was clean and food was pretty decent. A simple menu, which I prefer as usually fewer items are easier to keep doing well. I was disappointed the chicken fried steak and the pork tenders are purchased pre-made and frozen, and not made in house as that's why I went to diner to try. I opted for a burger after waitress explained. Personally I believe a good diner with small menu could really be phenomenal with scratch made comfort food, but that is getting harder to find now. I probably would go back, but $15 for a burger, tots, and water with tip most likely would be for breakfast. read more

Good, home cooking with breakfast served all day. The pancakes are great, buttermilk or wheat, and are as big as the plate they're served on. They've got just about any breakfast item you can think of. They've got good burgers too as well as fried chicken and other comfort food. read more

Great Little country diner! Breakfast served all day which was nothing short of awesome. (or what you need for a late late night meal or hangover food) Serving real local sausage patties with eggs actually cooked the way I ordered (gasp!) with a generous helping of well cooked hash browns. they have homey options like rye toast and sweet tea. I laugh when I think of this place... Simple down-home diner with something for everyone. Breakfasts are big and filling. DONT go right after church - it's packed to the gills. Home cooked bread from the local, town mill. Soup is tasty. Buffalo burgers are average - just make sure to not get it well done, remember, buff should be medium. Grilled cheese, fries, yadda yadda - what you expect from a little grill in a small town - wont stop any wars but will hit the spot. Salad bar is small but surprisingly good and fresh! Pies of all kind - have some. Service - aloof bit attentive. My husband and I lived in Wamego and visited The Freindly Cooker probably 1-2 times a week for about a year and a half and were still strangers by the time we left. If you're treated like an outsider, dont sweat it - everyone's a stranger unless they know your grandpappy or went to HS with you. Conversations are often loud and entertaining in a middle-America kind of way (think Napoleon Dynamite). There's a bed & breakfast above the place, too, if it's late and your tired. I don't think they take credit ... I seem to recall paying by check whenever I was there. You can get cash at the grocery store or Kaw Valley bank. read more

As a New Jerseyan, one thing I love is a good authentic diner. Its been hard to find around Kansas but this is the place! All the classic diner options, quick service, good food, breakfast all day, and homemade pie. Not to mention of course just two waitresses who have everything down to a science, making sure that coffee cup is never empty. Glad I found this place. read more

My family has been going to the Friendly Cooker my entire life. The waitress, Brenda, knows all of our regular orders, and feels like part of the family when we're there. I feel like the Cooker has gotten a little pricier, but it's not like anything would keep me from going there.
