Fresh Market is a great alternative store when you need something specific. They're a little pricey for everyday groceries, but they have specialty items I would only want from there. I just found out that they give a free slice or vanilla or chocolate cake on your birthday also, that was a nice surprise. I recently had a problem with the sale price on three sets of baby back ribs. Lisa, my cashier, and Ernie, the manager at the Parham Road store, were wonderful. They both took a lot of time, trying to figure out how to solve my problem and were helpful, courteous, respectful and never made me feel as if I were wasting their time. The cashier must have been having a bad day as she was rude and unfriendly. She basically threw my sushi in a plastic bag sideways and it smeared all over the lid. One place in town where customer service still exists. This littler store (Parham rd) stands out as a real jewel in most every aspect. The shopping experience is comfortable, a treat to the eyes and ears and feet. The produce is well kept. I love Fresh Market. I ordered two cooked turkeys for Thanksgiving, splurged on one, an organic young turkey, the other a standard turkey. They came shrink wrapped, the special turkey so small it looked like a chicken. It was almost impossible to reheat and serve. Today the leftover turkey tastes suspiciously old, as if the turkey had been cooked days before Thanksgiving. A regrettable choice on my part. read more

For an upscale grocer, this market definitely deserves 5 stars. From the moment you walk in, your eyes are welcomed with a gorgeous display of flowers, from the humble daisy to the exotic orchid. The produce department is fresh, well stocked and beautiful. Everything is organized and clean. Organic or conventional, your choice. I love the coffee section, the aroma arrests your nostrils and you want to stay here forever. The selections are numerous and I even picked up a hard to find Louisiana coffee: Cafe Du Monde. The cheese case is glorious! From average to pricey cheeses, a cheese tray from this store is sure to draw raves! It's quite extensive. I like the Champagne cheese! The prepared foods and the deli are incredible as well, I often pop in to grab a salad for lunch! I literally could go on and on. No, this may not be your everyday grocer, although they do have the usual staples, but this experience is a treat and a splurge! I don't normally review grocery store / department store type places, but I find myself going to The Fresh Market and leaving pleased every time. For those who haven't been here, The Fresh Market is a grocery store that has some of the normal things you'd find at any grocery store along with seasonal, local, natural, and otherwise novelty items. Things that I like about Fresh Market: ------------------------------------------------- - The baked goods are pretty good. They have a fresh muffin section that has items like corn muffins, blueberry muffins, and the like. The corn muffins are delicious and my fiancee has went back for more chocolate chip muffins. Today we tried a cheese and herb focaccia bread and it was also good! The apple cinnamon donut holes were good too! I haven't tried the cookies or cakes but they look pretty good. - Seasonal Items: At Halloween they had some interesting Halloween candy items and a different spread of candy than they normally do. Now they have Christmas and Thanksgiving items. And to clarify, it's not just holiday foods, it's also trinkets, gift items, and other novelties. I think part of the appeal is you can come here every other week and the store looks completely different. - Snack items you can't find most places: Things like Unique Pretzel Shells and Organic Sunny Bears to name a couple. - The variety of items: Sometimes when you go to a store you know a couple things that you need, but end up finding some neat things you had no intention of getting. I've ended up with items from their aisles that caught my interest like soups and frozen burritos. - The sliced deli meat and ground meats: We've gotten some deli meats here and some ground turkey that were pretty good. Can't really speak for some of the steaks and other items. Things I don't like about Fresh Market: --------------------------------------------------- - Identical items are occasionally cheaper at other stores. Fresh Market does have some "normal" grocery items like Tostitos Corn Chips in addition to their line of chips and different varieties, and items like Tostitos are a bit more expensive than say, Kroger. Not dollars different of course, but things like 20 cents can add up. - The flavor variety of individual items can vary quite a bit. If you have a methodical grocery list with specific flavors you may run into some issues. Things I don't have clear opinions on yet: ------------------------------------------------------ - The fresh dinner foods and lunches. They, like most other grocery stores, have "build a lunch" and a la carte items you can purchase pre-made and then eat them. I haven't tried them yet, but the panini sandwiches, chicken, and wraps look good. Overall ---------- I really like Fresh Market. The availability of their items and layout of the store changes seemingly frequently, so if you have a definitive shopping list of items you must get, you might not be able to get by with just here alone. That said, the seasonal items and variety is actually what appeals to me because every time you go there the experience is a little different. I'm a fan. read more

Went to FM for ribs; when I got home and opened the package, the ribs had a foul odor. Why would the employee give a paying customer rotten meat? When I called the store to complain the assistant manager just made excuses for the employee. It appears that management thinks it is ok to pawn off old rotten meat to the customers!!! I usually patronize this store weekly but not anymore. read more

I visited this shop this morning. Needed some fresh crab cakes off the fish counter. The old guy saw me staying and waiting and went inside and kept doing his things. 5 minutes later he came out looked very annoyed asked me what I want His face was so unpleasantly fed up so I decided to give him 1 just to cheer up him a little One more star is for nice girl at the checkout. Thank you for being kind and nice Sorry but this not how you meet your customers even though they your early birds. Btw meat and fish didn't look fresh today , there for I won't come here anymore. I'm a huge Fresh Market fan and I'll drive across town to hit this one. Luckily, I have a client in that neighborhood so I can conveniently stop in once or twice a week. As a single person, I love the flexibility of being able to buy one pork chop or one chicken breast at the butcher counter, and I'm addicted to the Tira Misu at the bakery counter. The packaged and hot deli foods are great for a quick work lunch or take home, and they have a great selection of fresh flowers and potted plants, so I often pick up stuff for myself or for gifts. I can buy creme fraiche, Belgian beer, or German spaetzle all in one store so what's not to love? read more

I'd like to like this place. I really would. However, it's not a 1st choice in any category. Their meat department - at least according to their employees, which is the only metric available - does not offer any hormone/antibiotic-free beef or pork options. Their coffee section has some nice items and steep prices. Their cheese section is OK, but not enough to draw me in on its own. Other reviewers have compared it to Whole Foods, which is IMO a canard. Not a huge fan. Most of the stuff you can find here is available cheaper at other local stores and markets. Yes I'll admit they have a nice meat selection, but don't be fooled by the constantly pumped and sprayed gasses keeping that meat so bright and red. The staff is friendly and available. I feel like this place is designed for 40-55 year old Suburban women who think that paying more and shopping in places likes this automatically takes that extra 10 lbs off. Wrong!!! They keep this place was immaculately clean, and the workers were both friendly and helpful. I really only came in after finding out they carry Counter Culture Coffee, but "ew'd" and "aw'd" over a few things while I was it! My mother was looking for a particular taste in her coffee, and they had one of the Managers come over to speak with her about a few brands they carry that would fit the bill for her pallet....that was such a wonderful blessing to her since she is rather picky and really wanted something special that she would enjoy thoroughly...and she found it there. They really do have an extensive coffee selection, and my mother was definitely please (as was I since I am CRAZY over Counter Culture Coffee) This was an easy store to get what you wanted and quickly check out if you're so inclined. But buyers beware, there is so much here that calls your name, for those who can afford it that is....this is not a budget friendly sort of store....but there are actual sales of the week...so this helps those who are more budget minded. Overall, this place is really a wonderful store to walk through! I go to this location at least once a week. It's is always clean and is full of fresh veggies and fruit. The meat section is also very nice. I regularly grab lunch from already prepared food case. Try the lemon orzo salad with spinach and pine nuts. My favorite is the shrimp salad bar in the seafood section. If you love nuts, this is a place you can find a variety in many forms. The bakery is also a special feature. The cakes and cookies are the best. I pretty much love this store. It's a little expensive but worth it. I didn't give it five stars because sometimes there is an unnecessary wait in line. read more

I love Fresh Market overall. The atmosphere with the music playing in the background lack of major crowds and overall relaxed feel makes this a place to come again and again. This one tends to stand out as it has ample room, very good management and probably the highest quality produce in the Richmond Area. Great meat and fish section. Very good fruit and vegetable section. But because the store is very small, you won't find all the things you'd find in a traditional supermarket. i just had some sushi i bought 2 hours ago and it was horrible: spoiled fishy tasting! I ended up dousing it wiht wasabi to mask the bad fish taste.,... now I realize I should have thrown it away. I'm afraid I'm going to get sick. Yuck. I eat sushi at least once a week and know 'better' sushi can be had from a restaurant where it is made to order, but I have ALWAYS gotten fresh sushi from Ukrops/Martins. I'm really disappointed. Yes, they do you have bulk candy (and so much more). We went to fresh market solely looking for bulk candy (for which there seems to be a void in Richmond) with my son, but what we found was so much more! they have lots of variety with many out-of-the-ordinary ingredients such as coconut flour, coconut sugar, quinoa pasta just to name a few. As well, their beer selection is rather expensive, and they have an impressive array of wines to, many of which are not the usual, well-known labels. The young guy who rang our groceries out at the register was friendly, knowledgeable, witty, and fun, which just added that much more to the experience. Great place, especially if you're looking for those unusual and hard-to-find food items. read more

The Fresh Market has a great selection of foods I can't find elsewhere, however I don't do all my shopping there. I adore the bakery and the meat selection is pretty good (still doesn't match Wegman's), the bulk goods and candy selection is the best in the area. I'm keep finding things that I've only seen online or read about. I pay attention to their circular so I can get some good deals because I feel like it is more expensive there. On the downside, it can be hard to find what you are looking for in a small store. I think their produce section needs to have better labels because I have not been able to find things or find their prices on several locations. Sometimes the store feels cramped, but that's to be expected with so many items packed in. read more

While I shopped at this market for years for their quality high end meats, this is the second time I have been majorly disappointed. The first time a man came on to me from the meat counter asking for personal information. Obviously I didn't give to him because I'm married. When my husband notified the manager he immediately took the correct steps. However, when i went back to the store with my husband to thank him, he said and I quote "You're the one he went after". I was mortified. Second time I went to the store I waited 10 minutes at the bakery counter. A big black woman came out and had an extremely bad attitude. She threw my items in a box and put them on the counter. I immediately went to the assistant manager who apologized for her behavior but apologized for her since she was the baker and the two bakery workers were not at their station. Excuse me, I'm the customer and will never expect that treatment from a worker. Do yourself a favor. Go to Carytown. Much nicer, bigger, and nicer quality. read more

So my room mate goes up there to get food. I request a simple turkey wrap, I am at home working. They do not have any so she asks they make one. The sign near the sandwiches says they make them upon request. When she asked the employee acted like it was a huge imposition to make a simple wrap. Really? Why? You know what was on my wrap, turkey, cheese, honey mustard, and maybe a veg, how the hell is that hard? I have also encountered this issue myself where they would not make the wrap I asked for which pissed me off. If you are not going to make a wrap on request them please remove your custom sandwich sign. She texts me the issue and I call to speak to the manager to complain. In the end the wraps were made but my room mate was told they do not do wraps on request bc they are too difficult. Really? I took a poll on Facebook and my friends 7 year old child can make a wrap so what's the problem fresh market? No mass for me at this location! read more

I always enjoy stopping in the Fresh Market to pick up a few goodies for a night of drinks, snacks, and a satisfying movie. The selection of dry goods and refrigerated items is beautifully edited, while the prepared foods feature quality ingredients and display evidence of seasoned palates in the kitchen. I particularly enjoy the jalapeno pimento cheese (a Southern indulgence), and always sample a bit while considering the silky duck pate and the savory, delightful blue cheese stuffed olives (the best I have found sold in markets). Though some of the packaged snacks and condiments have been marked up, the vast selection of bulk treats (including stellar wasabi peanuts whose heat sweeps over your tongue), coffees and teas, novelty chocolates, and tasty frozen entertaining options, along with the bountiful fresh meat choices (packaged and prepared to your specification by actual butchers) may persuade you to turn the occasional blind eye. Expect a lengthy wait at the meat counters, where your eyes will caress the roasts and sausages until hunger overtakes you, but you will sail through the checkout in a flash. This review is for steaks only. I will never buy another steak from TFM . I purchased their grass fed ribeye and asked the butcher to pick out 3 nice steaks because we had company coming. They were terrible and loaded with fat. The last time I bought steaks I got the NYStrips and they were tough. My husband said I cannot buy steaks anymore. So disappointed because I buy a lot of food there every week. I am going to butcher of Bon Air in the future! read more

Horrible customer service. Refused to honor a valid $5 coupon at checkout because we didn't give it to her when we arrived at checkout. They were not busy and we had to wait for her to finish her conversation with a coworker before we could checkout. I will NEVER go back. It's Whole Foods from now on.
