So, I am on the hunt for a very specific cake for a very special person and I have been hitting up all the grocery stores in this area to find the perfect one. Enter The Fresh Market. This store is laid out so nicely and it was just a pleasure shopping here. Here are some things of note: Flowers I'm a sucker for beautiful fresh flowers and The Fresh Market has some lovely ones. I was impressed with the premade bouquets but what really impressed me were the plethora of colorful roses. All perfect (no wilted petals, etc.) and a dozen was only $11.99. Guys, listen up. Women, as complicated as you like to say we are, are really pretty easy to please. Get your butt to Fresh Market and buy her a dozen roses for NO REASON AT ALL. You'll be surprised at what a mere $12 will do for your relationship. Trust me. Salad Bar Ok, here they have not one, not two but three salad bars. A regular veggie and fruit one, an olive bar if that is more of you thing and a seafood bar. The seafood bar is one I've yet to encounter anywhere else and I was intrigued. You can get salmon salad, seaweed salad, shrimp bruschetta, shrimp salad and a lobster salad. Everything looked fresh and delicious even though I came around 8pm, an hour before closing time. Bulk Nuts and Candy This area of the store is really cool, You can get any kind of nut, dried fruits or chocolate candies here. You can mix and match to make your very own trail mix or just pick up any color MnMs to match the colors of your party. The enormous selection of chocolates were quite impressive as well. I even found sweet little crab and fish chocolates. I did love this store and will come in on a regular basis. And sadly they do not make the cake I am looking for. The search continues. read more

Purchased cooked lunch. Chicken florentino. I went home and cut the breaded chicken it was raw. Unbelievable they charge an arm and a leg and get this kind of service. I went back with the left over and the manager got offended because of my complaint. They have my money back. I'll never go back there again I wont give you another chance. Every time I think about Fresh Market I remember eating raw chicken. Then dealing with egotistical, managers with superiority complex and no understanding of customer service. The interior was very clean with nice decor. The layout was very odd, nothing like a normal grocery store with isles. Everything seemed cluttered. The meat and seafood didn't fresh at all, and everything seemed well over priced. The staff was attentive friendly and helpful but there are cheaper alternatives with much fresher ingredients for sale. The sushi that I purchased for lunch was great. A little pricey but I did not mind because the rolls were huge, and the fish was noticeably fresh. Not the worst store by any means, it was a nice experience, but there is just better for much cheaper so I do not see a reason to come back. read more

I was in Lafayette for a family gathering when I was sent to find frozen spinach. Everyone suggested I skip the Fresh Market, but it was the closest store to the gathering. When I walked in I was surprised at the size of the store. The location I normally visit is much smaller. This version had all the same fresh produce, meat and baked goods. It also had a large sandwich/prepared foods area that looked great. In the end I was unable to find my frozen spinach, but I did like the store. If I lived closer I would definitely shop here. read more

A descent option for those doing zero waste. Their bulk section is more focused on snacks but there are a lot of snacks that Whole Foods and rouse's doesn't have in their bulk food section. But if you are looking for bulk food staple items like flour, rice etc. go to one of the other stores. They have a lot of waste free options in other parts of the store. I think their deli and butcher counter is better than Whole Foods or Rouse from a waste free perspective. There is a lot more verity. The bakery and salad bar are a good place to check out too. read more

Visiting in Lafayette, right near my daughters Condo is this awesome grocery store. She shops here all the time. The down side is , this place is sooo very high Priced. The great side is this place is awesome!! They have some wonderful food items. Deli, meats, cheese, salads, pastries! Tons of fantastic Christmas and Holiday items that you just do not find anywhere else. In the Deli section, one of the men working here was nice enough to marinate the Mozzarella cheese for us, as they were out. They really go out of their way for you here. They will help you to find any special itme you may need. We bought a lot of really cool things here and spent a happy Holiday thanks in part to The Fresh Market. The staff is so very nice, and very helpful. It is located in a great shopping Center in River Ranch. read more

I visit Fresh Market because it is so close to my apartment. Although it is a bit more pricey I have been willing to pay for the convenience. The ambiance makes the store such a pleasure to visit. Some of their items are comparably priced to other chains. The staff is friendly and helpful--one cashier even recognized we had been gone for awhile and commented that she had not seen us in awhile (we had been on vacation). It's always nice to have a friendly face greet you at the end of a long day. Fresh Market's produce is okay at best. I would love to see Fresh Market put more effort into fruits and vegetables that are in season in the region. Rarely do I see local produce or produce from the United States. Although some of the produce is organic, it is often shipped from places as far as Australia and New Zealand. It would also be nice to see Fresh Market incentivize reusable canvas bags. At least one other supermarket gives small rewards to customers who bring reusable bags. We frequently will head over to get the chicken dinner, which is convenient and tasty on those nights we just do not feel like cooking. The coleslaw, unfortunately, has been inconsistent. Sometimes it is really good, but one time it was actually spoiled. The other times it has tasted alright, but not nearly as good as other times. The meat selection is also okay. We stopped getting the steak kabobs because the meat was old and the steaks were not as tasty as those available at other supermarkets. read more

FM is a difficult place to review. Why is that? They have a terrific meat dept., good prepared foods, a good selection of gourmet products, but they suffer from a too small store, outrageous prices on lots of items that can be had sometimes for half the price at other stores, ($5.49 for a little package of paprika, srsly) and an overall not very pleasant layout or shopping experience. I don't know if the old adage "you get what you pay for" applies here. I have gotten the same elsewhere & paid substantially less there. I have always felt pretty conflicted about ole' Fresh Market, so I'll immediately break everything down into pros & cons. PROS: *Store is clean *Setup of store (lighting, product placement) is comfortable & inviting *Employees are usually very nice *Occasional free samples (yaaay generosity!) *Abundance of bulk items (nuts, trail mix, candy, etc.) *Seafood quality is good *Exotic produce is occasionally available (think lychees, etc.) CONS: *Steep prices for things that are available & less expensive elsewhere in town *Produce is organic, but from far away (nutritional value, the point of buying organic, can be lost significantly over the time it takes to ship) *Patrons can be quite snooty, rude, & ridiculous *Interior is much smaller than the outside would lead you to believe (they must have a pretty big warehouse) This review really makes me miss the local fare, size, prices, selection & varied clientele at Central Market in Austin, TX. *sigh* Don't get me wrong; I enjoy visiting Fresh Market on occasion. It's just that I can find many of the same items at lower prices when I visit Rouse's, Albertsons & Vitamins Plus - & without the clusterf**k traffic & general snooty attitude that can usually be found in abundance on the south side of town. When I worked in retail on the south side during college, we called these snobs "08-ers" because of their 70508 zip codes. They are my least favorite thing about the Fresh Market experience. Definitely has a good variety in all departments. Exactly what you'd expect to pay being an independent grocer. I really love getting the side dishes at the deli. They also are the only place I'm aware of that sells the Belgian chocolate milk. Great candy selection also! It's a great gourmet supermarket and a bit larger than other similar type supermarkets. They have a very large selection of coffee and cholocate, but they really shine with their ready-made items and bakery. Ready-made items include whole chickens, salmon, pork, sandwiches, and an assortment of cold salads. They do not have a great selection of items, but what they do have is usually the better brands, more organic and less mass-market. Because of this, it tends to be on the more pricy side, but at least you do get value for what you pay. I don't do all my shopping here, only going for select items and the fresh sushi. The management in general is horrible and makes the store a very unorderly, dissary if you look closely. That is why NONE of the employee's are friendly or aware of anything that is going on. They despise the company and are inadequately trained for anything. The food is usually either getting ready to expire or already expired. The meat department manager, personally forces the meat cutters to use bad meat and "turn it over on the other side" and forces them to change out the meat in OLD meal kits noone has bought from months ago, yet KEEPS THE SAME VEGETABLES. I have no reason to lie this is all FACTUAL. There are people who constantly have to come back to the store daily to bring back rotten meat and seafood because of improper dating. Horrible company to WORK FOR. Management does not care how long you are there, they will cut hours randomly, assign you to go home randomly, and hire new people who will get more hours than you who've been there for months. I've worked for both WHOLEFOODS, and Fresh Market.. WHOLEFOODS WINS BY A LANDSLIDE. They have been rated the WORST COMPANY IN AMERICA for two consecutive years and the LAFAYETTE store solidifies why this is so. read more

I used to love this store but not so much lately. Sometimes it smells like hot garbage, today it smelled like bad seafood. The fellas who work the meat counter are NOT friendly. There are one or two who don't even say a word to you. They just stare blankly at you. No greeting, no "how can I help you?", no nothing. It's better than being chewed out which I've witnessed one guy do to a customer, I guess. Today I didn't even get a stare. I guess it sucks to work there. What else can I infer from this common behavior? I walked out empty handed and am headed to Whole Foods instead. Fresh Market is very convenient but I AM DONE. read more

When talking to friends and co-workers about it, seems like I'm not the only one that feels this way. Fresh Market is the best store ever! I don't even know where to begin. Their produce dept. is top notch. The hot foods here will make you salivate. My personal favorite are all of the huge barrels of snack type of foods you can mix and match. Peanut butter pretzels and buffalo peanuts. YUM! They also have some really good ready to cook meat stuff such as chicken cordon bleu. Albertson's eat your heart out! read more

I have purchased from the location in Baton Rouge and hoped that the experience at the Lafayette location would be the same. The experience exceeded my expectations. The staff, especially our check out person was extremely friendly, making sure we were able to find everything we needed. If I could afford to shop here all the time....I would! When the Fresh Market first opened, I was expecting a Whole Foods type of place. For the most part, they met that expectation, however in some ways the didn't (no need to go into that). Anyways, we ended up getting a Whole Foods in Lafayette after a few years, and ,needless to say, I was there during their opening week. However, I quickly found that I much preferred the relaxing and calm atmosphere offered at the fresh market. I have never had a poor experience with any employee and it is always very clean. The only downside includes the high prices. Great store though! I would pay an entry fee if necessary to shop in that environment. read more

Just moved to Lafayette and my first shopping experience was greeted with THE SWEETEST grocer, Mary. She saw my daughter and talked to her like family. Then, she asked her what her favorite fruit was (she said pear), and Mary picked out the yummiest kind for my daughter! She sliced it, put it in a container, and told her to enjoy her snack! I was so moved by the generosity and friendliness of this sweet woman. Mary is the reason we will be shopping here primarily for many years to come. This place is excellent for hard to find items that you can't get anywhere else. The cheese section is very good, and the take and bake brie is wonderful. I live near the store and I find that the produce is fresh and well taken care of. The ice cream selection is good. This IS NOT a store to buy common household products. They are very pricey here, but it's great for party food and take out. The cashiers, etc are very helpful and the staff very friendly. I had to laugh at the comments about 08 ers being snobs!! I love this place! I live right behind it so I can walk anytime, food is great, my husband and I love the seafood salad and the broccoli and almond salad. The paninis are great too (specially the italian) but if you are in a hurry do not come during lunchtime, they usually make your food when you order so it may take a little while. My husband tried meat from all the stores (Walmart, Target, Albertson's, etc) but since he bought it here it is the only one he buys. I swallowed a hard bone in a piece of the rotisserie salmon, which punctured my esophagus, and I had to have emergency throat surgery, due to the potentially life-threatening condition. I had a lengthy hospital stay, on tube feeding, with a drain to the outside of my neck for days. I missed a lot of work, the pain was excruciating, and it took weeks to recover fully. I contacted the store, then upper management, then their insurance company. The insurance representative was defensive, and didn't even offer to pay charges not covered by insurance. read more
