In addition to having a strong local following, it is also conveniently located near the F1 exit on the MTR in Causeway Bay. I am 100% in favor of any major city offering a late night Shanghainese option, let alone one that is open at all hours. While the awning looks like it would be an entrance to a proper restaurant, this is like any typical noodle shop in HK: small, cramped, and a liability for 3 or more people at a time. I love that the staff is constantly doing food prep which makes sense if they're feeding people non-stop at all hours. The smell of the cooking makes me appreciate the family business feel of the place. Overall, I like the food. It reminds me a lot of the NYC Chinatown Shanghainese scene, which is also good, but sometimes tastes like Shanghainese food if it were cooked by Canto folks. This is really not that different since it doesn't really remind me of the flavors that one would get in Shanghai (#2). That doesn't make the food worse, but it takes a slight ding on the authenticity bit. I still am enamored with the concept of this place. They offer a lot of my go-to items: salty / sweet soymilk (咸和甜豆漿), stuffed rice sticky rolls (粢飯), lion's head meatball (獅子頭), vegetable rice (菜飯), dan dan noodles (擔擔麵) and dumpling classics like soup dumplings (小籠包) and shengjian pan fried buns (生煎包). The former are frequent items for practically diners here (especially the salty soymilk with fried bread sticks), but the latter two are a tough sell for me. It's not that I don't love the meat or broth in the XLB or SJB, but that it's just a little too doughy for my tastes. I was pleasantly surprised with their mackeral noodle soup (醺魚上海麵), which was hearty and simple. I think the service pulls no punches. They're not the warmest folks, but hardly anyone is here for the service. One can only rock Canto fare for so long, so having a Shanghainese inspired spot that is open all day and night is a concept I'm happy to support. ____________ (#1) At least in Causeway Bay. There is an open kitchen where you can see the staff at work, beating the egg white, folding in the egg yolk, heating the pancakes on the skillet. They have the production down to a science, the staff keeps checking the temperature with a thermometer. These pancakes are fluffy by beating the egg white first to an airy lightness before incorporating into the pancake mix. Plenty of videoes are available on YouTube should you wish to DIY. My pancake comes out relatively quick. A light, fluffy cloud rich in the flavor of milk and egg. Like angel cake but creamier. It is so tasty on its own I don't need any sauce or cream to enrich it. It sure put me in a state of Shiawase, of bliss and happiness. Until it comes to paying the bill and I realized that the pancake cost me US$20... Happiness does come at a price... The chefs do not use any baking powder and instead use a secret unique recipe which makes the pancakes softer and fluffier than regular pancakes. I went with a dear friend at 11:30am and we were almost the last in line for the first queue. We waited over 1.5 hours before we were seated. While I was waiting I perused the menu. They had both savory and sweet pancakes and a variety of drinks like coffee, iced tea and milk tea. It was quite efficient; the staff knew exactly what they were doing and told us that we could serve ourselves with lemon water, regular water or hot water from dispensers on a table near the kitchen. The ambience inside was modern, bright and well lit (for Instagramming of course). There was a menu in Chinese with pictures so you just point at what you want. They did have a laminated paper of information like their free WiFi and IG account information. Under out seats were baskets where you could put your purses or whatnot. For someone who stresses out about where to put my purse in restaurants this was genius! I wish they had more of these in the States... After sorting out our purses we knew exactly what we wanted as soon as we were seated and ordered: Meal Pancake with Scrambled Eggs and Thick Sliced Bacon (HK$128): This came with three wheat pancakes, scrambled eggs and literally 2 pieces of bacon that were 2"x2" each. You don't need fruit, sauces or granola to make this glorious dish, well glorious. It came with a butter and a small container of syrup. We inhaled the pancakes and called it a day. I'm actually very surprised at the good reviews on the bun here. Its one of the few times that Google reviews are more fair and accurate than Yelp reviews for me. Don't trust the lists!!!!!!!!!!!!
