While visiting Munising, Michigan, my husband and I stopped at an outdoor food truck for lunch. The Fish Basket was listed by other Yelp reviewers as a good place to eat. I agree. The Fish Basket is about a block off of Munising Avenue and within sight of Lake Superior. It advertised "Fresh Lake Superior Whitefish". My husband and I decided to split a meal. The fish was lightly breaded in a cornmeal flour and deep fried. It was delicious and not greasy. The French fries tasted homemade, and we got such a generous potion we couldn't finish them. Tables were set up near the truck where customers could enjoy their lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and would recommend it. The fish was so fresh and so well made. Although it was fried it tasted very light - the batter was minimal and the oil was likely not stale. They have multiple hot sauces to complement the meal. The owner was so friendly and always asking all the patrons how the food was. They said we didn't have to be hungry to order more and he was right! Great food. Great hospitality. We arrived in Munising on Christmas Eve in the evening, so many places were closed, so we were excited this was open. The woman who took our order was very friendly and so was the man who helped her cook our food. We ordered the whitefish which was delicious. I stopped here 2 years ago after reading about it in the NYTs 36 Hours in the UP. It was everything the article said it would be and more. Hands down the BEST whitefish I have ever had. So much love for The Fish Basket. Fresh whitefish with the perfect amount of batter--enough that you get a few crunchy bits on the edges, but not so much that the delicious fish gets masked. My group was also especially pleased with the chowder in a bread bowl. The decor is quaint, although the seating is modest. I was super impressed with this food truck. The owner is a friendly local who purchases whitefish each morning from the docks. I got to watch him cut up our fish, batter it, and fry it right there. He obviously takes pride in the operation. If you're a tourist in Munising and want an authentic taste of whitefish, this is the place to get a straightforward, picnic-style, not over-priced experience. It's a must and I saw at least 4 locals come here to eat in the short time I was there. It tasted absolutely amazing. A few other thoughts about the experience - there were too many fries (which were very good) just thrown on top of the amazing whitefish, and I wasn't a huge fan of that presentation. Seemed odd to cover the most amazing whitefish I've tasted with all of those fries. I'd also like to see just a few more options for the fish basket - it only comes with a small thing of coleslaw and a ton of fries. I'd also like to see fresh lemon slices available (even though I think the batter had a lemon pepper in it). And the tables and chairs could have used a little work. Best fish in town or practically anywhere else. My boyfriend and I both got the fish and chips. So fresh and light and complemented with tasty tartar sauce. Fries are made right there. Best fish I have ever had in my life. The coleslaw was being freshly made as we ordered. Our fish was sliced by the chef immediately before being cooked.
