We've done several escape rooms, so I feel like we know the drill and what to expect. Each one is unique in that the clues are different, the room setup is themed and you never know just what type of puzzles or challenges you'll have to master to get out. This room started out great-we did the Lair of Lunacy and were appropriately briefed that we would start in the dark and what we specifically needed to "solve" to get out. (I'm purposely leaving out details to not give anything away.) Part way through our time, we came across a clue that was very robust and even had some directions that should have led us to solving that piece. One member of our group spent a ton of time on this one challenge and grew increasingly frustrated with it. He knew how to solve it, but it was not leading anywhere. Another part of the room had a similar clue that looked to be well-thought out and complex, but it never morphed into anything that would help us proceed. We eventually made it out of the room and asked about those two clues. We were told that they were both "red herrings." We believe that they were originally part of the game and that some of the components malfunctioned and they had to remove those clues. You can still get out of the room, obviously, but those items were major time wasters. I understand placing things to add confusion and that not everything leads you to a clue, but these were so complex and "in your face" that I truly believe they were originally part of the game. It's too bad, because what we think they were supposed to do would have been really cool. read more

First off, this place is hard to find. It's located in a grey business building on 300E and 300S, nestled between other buildings, and on the 3rd floor. Park on Broadway between 200E and 300E. We had a small group of 4 and reserved the Sherlocked Escape Room. It was fun. I really wish we could have worked on all puzzles together, but for time's sake, split the tasks up. Two of us figured 3 locks in 5 minutes. I don't think the puzzles were too difficult at all. We escaped the room with 16 minutes left on the clock; that last puzzle was confusing (we were really just thinking too hard). We'll probs be back for the CSI room. read more

Fantastic! Due to their generosity, I had the luxury of doing 3 of their 4 rooms by myself during my short stay in Salt Lake City. Every other location required a minimum of 4 people per room in order to book, but I'm glad that was the case because I had a wonderful experience at The Escape Key. Both Lee and Nermin were incredible, fun hosts and made the experience worth going back for 3 times. Additionally, they were amenable to discussing some minor suggestions I had regarding some of the puzzles' mechanics. As for the rooms, they were great! Each room had a different style of puzzle flow so make sure to listen carefully to the hints the game master gives you. If I lived closer I'd definitely go back to check out any new room they had to offer. Thanks again, guys! :) read more

this place sucked. locks do unlock even when the combination is correct. spent 15 minutes on one lock in which we finally opened with the original, same combination! another lock the employee told us how to reset it, but later gave us different reset instructions over the monitor. spent 30+++ minutes trying to unlock locks with the right combination. host also docked us 5 minutes because we were "late." when we arrived the host was not in the front room. paid a fortune to come here for a turd host and dollar store locks! I originally typed this in all caps it was so bad. Unfortunately, Yelp does not allow you to have all caps... go there and you will see why an all caps post was necessary. i would definitely recommend not going there. you are welcome. have a nice night. read more

Best date I have had in a long time! Skip dinner and a movie and come here! 60 minutes to solve a series of clues to escape the room. Very well done and challenging. Sherlock Holmes feel to it. They take groups up to 10. We had 9 and only knew the 4 we came with. Had a blast still. Definitely come with a bigger group, more minds to solve the puzzles. The owners were super nice too. Clean place in downtown SLC close to Washington Square. Can't wait for more rooms to open and solve the puzzles there. read more

Well, it was setup like a normal escape room (have been to tons), but this one had some issues. The main thing is that it was very dirty. The waiting room had sand on the floor and dust everywhere. The couches, the ladies that were with us, didn't want to sit on them because of the dirtiness The room itself was dirty as if it had never been cleaned. The staff was one (very nice) lady who gave a lackluster introduction that was just a few sentences and didn't explain anything and didn't build excitement. She just recited an intro and locked us in. Definitely a lot of room for improvement. read more

Something different, unique and an all around great time. I had family visiting from Reno and we ran out of ideas where to take them. Heard good reviews about this place from Yelpers so we decided to give them a try. Ended up having a great time. Everyone was very involved and engaged. The staff was awesome and our Rogue agent was fantastic. We did the Impossible room. Will definitely be back to play the other themes. read more

We were a group of adults and none if us had been to an escape room before, so we didn't know what to do or expect. Despite the fact that we have many graduate degrees between us, this was quite challenging--(tho I bet a teenager could do it faster and better)! We left exhausted and laughing! Then we went to eat up the road at The Purple Turtle and to talk about what a riot we had! Next time (and there WILL be a next time!) we will know better what kind of things to do and look for. I HIGHLY recommend The Escape Key! (...and then going to The Purple Turtle!). The only suggestions I would make to the management is that some things were falling apart and didn't work. This is understandable, since the room gets pretty torn-up figuring-out clues, but some things were a mess and should be fixed and made sturdy, so they work. And the fish tank was disgusting! Maybe a snail or algae-eater to keep it clean. read more

We did the Sherlock room. My first impression was the guy running the place doesn't like his job. We didn't feel welcomed or appreciated or entertained. The room is too small for 8 people. It was kind of bland and old and smelt like grammas attic. The guy warned us that the fan in the room is not a prop, and cautioned if we screwed with it, the room would get warm. But it got warm anyway.The decorations were like garage sale junk with scraped off price tags and made-in-china stickers. The clues and puzzles were kind of typical of other escape room. Some props led to nowhere. But some of the clues were esoteric and required coaxing by the host, rephrasing the clues on the monitor. I think if other clues are necessary, they should put the clues in the room so the players can solve it on their own. When we didn't get out in time, we felt it wasn't a fair challenge. We've been to better escape rooms. This one is kind of meh. read more

We had 6 people, ages 20-50, do the Sherlock Holmes room, it was a good time. I like that there wasn't an "actor" or "host" in the room so you feel comfortable doing your own thing, they do give you clues on a TV screen when needed. A few of the props are getting a little worn, which is to be expected when people are messing with everything all day. The guy that checked us in and explained the basics was super nice. There was plenty of parking and the waiting area was nice. We accomplished both goals with 7 minutes to spare, though we may not have escaped had my daughter not just guessed a number on a lock, we couldn't figure that clue out. Always easier if someone in the group has done an escape room but they are fun no matter what!! read more

We did the Impossible Room with a group of 8. My thoughts were as follows: 1. I was disappointed with the presentation of the room. It was extremely small, especially for 8 people. I was expecting a good level of detail put into setting the room up for a proper experience/ambiance, but all we got was a bare little office building room with a desk and a shelf and some items placed about. 2. Once they put you in the room, they play a video for you on a monitor that explains your mission. The video immediately started stuttering/buffering as if it was streaming on a 56k connection. It was completely unwatchable so I went to the front and told the girl (there is a door that stays unlocked for safety reasons) and the girl was pretty rude and pretty much pushed me back into the room and said "it's probably our internet, the video doesn't even matter anyway" and then shut the door behind me without giving me a chance to respond. And here I was thinking that the video was relevant to the mission. It's not, because nothing means anything. 3. Throughout the mission, the monitor does display clues. The screen's alignment is off, meaning that every clue/everything the monitor displayed was cut off by about an inch or 2 on the left side... meaning we were unable to properly see the information they were trying to show us. What a joke. 4. There is no cohesiveness or meaning behind any of the clues/steps. It's just random. You look around to find one thing which leads you to the next and then to the next. I was expecting a little mental stimulation but there was not much. We ended up getting to the last clue/final step and didn't figure it out in time. One of the cut-off clues on the monitor was relevant to the final step, it would've been nice to have been able to read that. The last step, ironically, was the only one that was somewhat creative. But, by that point, we were low on time and I was already bored with the event. 5. The room is so small that pretty much once 1 person finds something, they do what you've got to do with it while everyone else just stands around. Sure, you could say the others can search the room for other stuff but the rooms so small that I found myself standing around most the time. I suspect this would've been a better experience with no more than 4 people. 6. The hour went by fast and I suppose it was a decently-enjoyable group activity. But the carelessness by the staff to make sure the basic things are properly functioning (the monitor with the clues and the intro video), the low-level of detail and effort that was put into the room setup, and the disconnectedness of the clues makes me unable to give them more than 2 stars. This concept has potential but if I am to try it again, I will be checking out another company. read more

Escape Key is a really well-run escape-the-room game. They offer 4 different rooms (we did the Lair of Lunacy) and finished with 23:04 to spare. While this was their "least challenging" room, it definitely offered a level of difficulty our relatively experienced group appreciated. The support staff is great (thanks, Tanner!). The space is a bit tricky to find: enter through the main doors at 250 E 300 S (a nondescript office building), walk down the hallway and take the elevator to the third floor. Escape Key will be to your right, down the hall a couple of doors when you get off the elevator. The Lair of Lunacy starts entirely in the dark, so be prepared for that if you're bringing kiddos. A different type of experience that will definitely test your mental skills. A nondescript building houses this unique business but once you are inside the doors you are in for a treat. They offer many different types of mysteries to solve that vary in difficulty. We did the murder mystery and it was definitely challenging. The support staff was very helpful from initial reservations to the day of the event. They even will offer up subtle clues to keep you on track, which was needed in our case. Tip: Look in Groupon for a nice deal So if you're tired of the same old birthday celebration give this place a try. It was worth it! read more

We did the CSI room for a family event - and it was great fun! They have plentiful clues and lots of intrigue to keep you guessing until the solution. Our only complaint would be that one prop did not function properly, and we lost out on precious time for a couple players trying to get it fixed for a few minutes. We started out in the dark, Working as a team on a lark. We fumbled and sought The clues that were naught. We pulled it together A fun time there was ever, Poems are hard to write. Seriously though- Grandparents, a mom, an aunt, and 2 kids all worked together. Only the aunt had high hopes it would be fun. Everyone else was skeptical. Grandpa- 3 out of 5 (which is high praise from a crotchety old man) Grandma- 4 out of 5 (she doesn't like the dark) Everyone else- 5 out of 5. We thought it was fun!! read more

We played in the infiltrated room. The marker was dry and we had to leave the room to track someone down to get a new market to document and solve puzzles. The type writer to solve a clue did not work and the lock to open the door to escape did not work. read more

It hurts to leave a one star review! We reserved an hour at Escape Key for a company event (~20 people) before they opened for regular hours, and they never showed up, or responded to our attempts to contact them for the half hour or so after our scheduled time! Bummer. read more

We attempted the Christmas Impossible room on 12/15/15 for our work party. It was a blast!!! Well, not quite, we did escape the room before the bomb went off (with 12:07 to spare, I might add!). This was a great challenge for all skill sets. Some of our group handled the "clue gathering" and others handled the logic and deductions. One of us (ok. me) managed to pick one of the locks and get us a step closer haha! We did need a bit of assistance with one clue-set, but once the moderater got us on task, we took off again. When it was over, we were all thrilled and all vowed that we would do it again. The staff showed us the other two rooms, which offer different challenges. This would be a great date night, family activity, etc. read more

Definitely felt like we should have picked up on several clues quicker than we did, but luckily you get hints along the way. This was my first experience with an escape room, and I can't complain even a little. The staff was friendly and very understanding when my wife and I were late. The challenge of the room we did was challenging and fun. The puzzles were not always easy to solve, but there is staff guided assistance. I appreciated the assistance, and the fact that it was dispensed sparingly. Having help only when we were clearly stuck. Overall, this was an outstanding experience and I have already recommended this to friends and family. read more

As a family we've done 9 or 10 escape rooms together and whether it's hard or easy we have always had a great time working on the clues together. We were in town visiting our son at The U and went here on our Daughter's 12th Bday. I have to say that this is hands down the least amount of enjoyment we have gotten out of an escape room. The clues were extremely haphazard with many of the same type of locks and little context as to what you should try to accomplish next. It was essentially like being turned loose to just ransack a room and see what you could come up with, again, unlike every other place we've experienced. The decor was also weak, from the lobby to the room itself, there is little attempt at actually creating a mood or fun activity type of vibe. Some of the clues & tasks were fun, most were just tedious or frustrating, not due to difficulty, but due to lack of context. We did find the staff to actually be friendly and helpful so we didn't have any issues with customer service. I am grateful we got the back to school special which essentially allowed us to buy 3 and get 1 free as the cost for the enjoyment was not what we typically get at an escape room, overall it was sort of meh. Hopefully this is taken in the spirit it is intended, I would love to see them up their game a bit and make it look like a place worthy of charging $25 bucks an hour or so. read more

Our experience started out awkward with the host persistently harassing our family about how we were supposed to wear our masks. We arrived exactly on time, but had difficulty finding the business (there's no sign on the street) and making our way up the impossibly slow elevator. So the host docked us 5 minutes time in the escape room. Once in the room, the host came back into the room twice to hassle us about the way we were wearing our face masks. The air conditioning wasn't working, there was a puny little fan that was supposed to keep the room cool, it was 80 degrees in a 10x10 tiny room, hard to breathe, and this guy has to come into the locked room with six family members and inflict his COVID politics on us after we paid $200 for a lousy escape room. So he's monitoring our face masks but didn't take the time to help us with props that weren't working, particularly some tricky padlocks. Even as we figured out the clues, we wasted lots of time with stuff that didn't work. Ultimately, we were a few minutes away from completing the puzzle, but timed out because he docked us five minutes, claiming we showed up late. There was no one else waiting in back of us, and 5 min wouldn't have hurt the guy. Overall, the room was lame with clues that were just a stretch for a normally intelligent group. Everyone in our family is smart, creative, and each with a college degree. But the clues in the escape room were just not discernible without help from the monitor. The decor was aged and unimaginative. We've been to many escape rooms previously, and this was our worst experience. read more
