    Royal Munkey Lamb Biryani

Some people are calling it the best Biryani in the city. I agree. A delightful restaurant. Great service, beautiful simian decor deliver a great venue for great food. Don't sleep on the cocktail. All around great spot.

Went there to get out of the cold and had a couple of hot drinks. We already ate but the food looked so good that we came back the next night. If I lived in NYC I would be a regular here. The food was amazing! Service was excellent too. Don't miss enjoying a delicious dining experience at this restaurant!

Me and some girlfriends walked in here the other night for dinner. We ordered a few mains which were all good but nothing really special, the portions were probably just right, if you're hungry it may be a little small. The highlight of the meal was the mango lassi, I could have had half a dozen of them in one. It felt like a community staple inside, everyone was chatting and having fun. The staff was nice but not around too often. Over all really nice vibe with average food.

We've enjoyed the Drunken Munkey many times over the years- always making a point to visit when we're in the city. The intimate, low-lit dining room paired with the quality of drinks and dishes make for a welcoming and cozy experience every time. Whether you want to just grab a drink at the bar or you want to take in a full meal, the team will be sure to make your visit memorable.

Very cute petite restaurant with dark wood & mirrored decor. Very cozy feel. Service was great and attentive. Unfortunately, the food didn't meet our expectations. The pani puri had lots of curry vinegar water, but no potatoes or chickpeas inside. The mango salad was bland and dressing felt like it was straight vinegar. The Chicken Tikka Masala was okay flavor wise and the chicken was tender, but the sauce was watery. The rice was mushy but well flavored. Not sure if we came on an off day for the restaurant- we were looking forward to good indian food based on the yelp reviews. Will continue our search for great Indian food in Manhattan.

This place has been on my bookmark for years, honestly. Stopped by yesterday to grab a drink and some snacks. Lily loved her Lady Mountbatten drink and honestly I did too. I had a glass of the cab and it was good. Ragz got the wise old munkey and liked it okay. For food we shared chilli cheese toast, which was absolutely delicious. The bread was crispy and soft, the cheese ooey-gooey and you could taste the Indian green chilli on it, which is the whole point in my opinion. I'm not even a big spice eater but this was so good! The crispy potatoes were also very well made and delicious, we could have totally inhaled another bowl if we wanted to. I also really liked the paneer tikka sizzler. Both the sweet and spicy sauces were authentically delicious and it was very well made. Finally, we shared the paneer pao and this was also very well done. The bun was soft, the paneer was flavorful. Definitely recommend this dish to anyone ordering. Honestly, there wasn't anything on the menu I didn't enjoy! The place has a very classic nyc cozy vibe. Our server, Karla was great and overall we enjoyed our time here. I'd love to come by again!

Went back again in a whim and the food and service are still as excellent. Manhattans for $15 - I'll take two please Dahi puris packed a punch and pretty good. Was cold yogurt so on point. The lamb sheekh kebabs were very well seasoned and perfectly made The short rib sliders are something we love at this place - highly recommend. The ribs melt in your mouth and goes really well with Indian flavors The lamb biryani was maybe a 3.5/5 but I'm a biryani snob and my complaint is about it being a little dry (weirdly). I have had better biryani here The gajar ka halwa we ordered last time and this time - good dessert but maybe we should try other things too lol I know they did great with community service during covid and they feed the homeless so good business in the neighborhood I'll go many times I know

Wow. I have no words. This food was 20/10 - the chicken biryani, the butter chicken tikka masala, the garlic naan, the chili cheese bread. The ambiance was fantastic, drinks were amazing, and service was also great. Would recommend !

Had a lovely meal here with tasty cocktails, and they have HAPPY HOUR! I like the vibes and decor for a dinner/drinks with friends or would work great for date night as well. I'll have to try more entrees here but I enjoyed the chicken biryani, which they make baked with dough on top! The real winner of our night was the dark rum & chocolate cricket ball dessert, so delicious Also notable was the excellent service! (I believe our server's name was Eleanor).

Such a cute and cozy spot hidden away on the upper east side. The atmosphere and the service is cheerful and inviting. The service was great! We got the lamb biryani, butter chicken tikka masala, butter nan and some lentils! Everything we got was delicious. They had an amazing cocktail menu and a good happy hour. I found the menu a bit pricey but all together would recommend this place to anyone! They do a program where you can contribute to a meal for someone in need.

Came here for my birthday dinner last night and it was great! Nice staff, delicious, flavorful food, dim lighting, and a delicious version of a spicy margarita. The complimentary naan is a nice touch. Service is a little slow and my food wasn't very hot (temperature wise), but those are really the only things of note. Love the sparklers they use for birthdays. The samosas and saag paneer were yummy and everyone else liked their food. The butter chicken was delicious and so was the dessert :)

    Butter Naan
    Evan N.

Everything we got was decent, nothing absolutely blew me away but nothing was bad by any means. The Mums Lemon Daal and the Naan itself were my favorite parts of the meal. Both the butter chicken and lamb biryani was good but I'm not going out of my way to get them again. The ambiance and decor was really enjoyable as it's a very cozy restaurant and they had decorated for the holidays which added even more! I absolutely love that you can pay an extra $7 to contribute to a meal for someone in need. They hand out hot meals to those in need every night and I would easily spend the $7 every time I came here! Service was awesome and everyone was so kind and welcoming! Amazing atmosphere I will be back!

I've dined at Drunken Monkey twice, and both times, our experience has been top-notch. I had the Butter Chicken Masala here, and I would highly recommend it. It had so much flavor! This is the way Butter Chicken is supposed to be! The Biryani here is probably the best around. It's also very unique as they cook it the old-fashioned way with the dough on top. The service was also exceptional. The decor is very cool as the restaurant has an old British-Indian vibe.

Ask the Community - The Drunken Munkey - UES

Do you have a happy hour ? If so what time and is there a happy hour menu?

    Is it halal?

Yes, since April 2023 we are Halal.

What vegan options are average here?

Dine, unfortunately we do not have a lot of options for vegans. Our menu is comprised of “top hits” from colonial Indian & street food dishes.

Do you have gluten-free options? Or are any of the main dishes naturally gluten-free? Thank you.

Unfortunately, we are unable to call anything gluten-free as cross contamination is very likely. If you’re less concerned about allergies and more from a nutritional aspect, we do have dishes without gluten as an ingredient.

Hi, is everything spicy or can you adjust/remove the spice on certain dishes?

Most of our dishes are not spicy (as in hot). The chill cheese toast, pork vindaloo and lamb biryani would be on the spicer spectrum, most of the others are on the milder side.

What vegan options are available here?

For strict vegans, we won’t have much in food, besides a few side dishes. Our cocktail menu is all vegan.

Is drunken munkey pet friendly if the pet is well behaved?

No food establishment is pet friendly in New York City. The health department does not allow pets indoors.

I have a reservation for 3 ppl 8:15pm tomorrow to celebrate my mother's 72nd birthday; by any chance do you have availability prior to 8:15pm?

Ella, please send us an email at kingkong@drunkenmunkey.com

    Is this kids friendly?

For lunch, brunch and early evening. YES!

Is there any updated food (and cocktails) menu anywhere? I saw the cocktail list on your website. Thank you.

Follow up to outdoor seating question + request - are you able to please upload latest outdoor seating pics? The ones from Sep show its all open. Trying to assess level of ventilation. I understand if its not poss - thank you

It’s covered and closed on one side. It is NOT an indoors feel. We have heaters, though on cold nights jackets are highly recommended.

    Which dishes are vegan?

Our vegan options are extremely limited as we use Ghee (clarified butter) to cook. While I would like for you to visit and experience our place, I would not recommend it for strict vegans.

    Do they offer indoor dining?

    Yes

Are you open for lunch weekdays?

    Yes we are.

Do you have any recommendations for a romantic dinner by delivery? What are the best options for reheating and plating at home?

Would you like this to be answered publicly so others copy your idea or in private :) Shoot us an email at kingkong@drunkenmunkey.com

Can I get my 9 and 5 year old for dinner on a Sunday?

Probably but it'll get crowded with the bar crowd by 9 or so.

Hi can we bring our 8 month old in a stroller?

I saw another couple with a baby about 1 year old and a stroller, though keep in mind that later at night, it's more of a bar feel

I have reservation for 6 pm on Friday and I am coming to celebrate my wife's birthday. Are there any add one available?

The biggest question then became, where to go? We needed a place that was relatively easy to get to that would hold close to 100 people. Jungly was a contender for several reasons - it's location, size, vibe, and menu all seemed to check off. It also helped that I had done business with the owner previously at one of his other spots. It seemed like the natural choice, so I went ahead with the booking. Jungly is located in LIC - it's a pretty convenient spot as its close to the LIRR and the subway. Parking can be a challenge, but luckily I found a spot only a block away. The space itself is nicely set up - walking in you're immediately greeted by the bar area with dining areas both to the left and the right. Due to our size, they closed the place to the public and we were able to freely roam the bar area and one of the dining rooms. In addition to standard tables, they have some lounge space and high tops by the bar. The vibe is somewhat modern - a black/grey color scheme paired with neon and golds. It looks like the space could easily be converted to a club-like atmosphere. Since we were here for a private event, the food was set up buffet style - we chose three apps, four mains, and two sides. Ultimately, for apps we chose pita bread with dips, steak tacos, and shrimp tacos. For mains we chose fried chicken sliders, smashed beef sliders, cacio e pepe, and roasted chicken. For sides, we got fries and Brussels sprouts. In general, all of the food was tasty; the strongest dishes were the tacos, fries, and the chicken tacos. The tacos were generously filled, the fries were the crispy skin style, and the chicken sliders were nice and crispy. The weakest for me was the cacio e pepe - not much flavor and just not really a standout IMO. My communication with management to set up the event were a little staccato, though in the end everything worked out. For the most part, my communication with them was consistent in the days leading up to the event. Service the night of the event was overall good - they were very accessible but I found that they could have replenished the food a little faster in response to the rate it was being taken from the buffet. The bar, on the other hand, was great - both in service and variety of liquor available. Overall, we had a great event at Jungly. They were professional, fair, and delivered on the goods. I would definitely consider hosting another event there, or dine here on my own.

The bartender, the one person who should be welcoming and engaging, came across as rude and lacked any charisma. On a Friday night, good energy behind the bar makes a huge difference, and that was completely missing. I ordered a margarita, which is one of the simplest and most common cocktails to make. I asked for it really sweet with plenty of salt on the rim. Instead, it came out barely sweet and with almost no salt. For a $17 margarita, I expected much better. I've had to return the drink because I've had better margaritas for $12 at other places. While waiting for my friend, I had to wait with a glass of water because I didn't trust the way they made the drink. The bartender told me I either needed to order another drink or move, which felt unnecessarily rude and unwelcoming. To be fair, the food was good and the space itself is nice. However, the bar service left a very poor impression. There are plenty of more affordable places where the staff are friendly and make guests feel welcome. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I wouldn't recommend this place. Give this place a 6.5
