FSG is sandwiched between One Good Tern Wild Bird store and Simply Fish restaurant in an odd layout of a strip mall off Quaker and Braddock in Alexandria. They have a vast selection of wines, ports, cheeses, caviar, and breads. What keeps us going back, and a lot of our friends talk about this, too, is that there is not a hint of pretention there. The owners are so very helpful, patient and kind. The prices are also comparable to bigger stores and chains. And, of course, they do generous case discounts. We normally buy cases of the Le Petit Duc La Porte (glad I'm typing it because I can't pronounce it) and we get a better price at Fern Street Gourmet than what they're selling it for at Whole Foods. Off-street parking is almost always available here. I know they do tastings, too, but have never been to one. If you're looking for a nice pairing for a special dinner or holiday meal but don't want to feel looked down upon like in some other wine joints, check out Fern Street. Clare, from Tallula wine bar, works here part-time, too, and really knows her stuff.

When I stopped in once looking for plastic silverware (random, I know), not only could I not find it, but I also did not recognize many of the items on the shelves. That said, there were dozens of people shopping on a Thursday afternoon, and everything was very well organized with a smooth flow throughout the store. Mom's is a specialty store, I think that is the best word, with solid options depending on what you are looking for. As noted in other reviews, this is a smaller and more curated market. It feels somewhere between a Trader Joes and Whole Foods in terms of atmosphere and selection. It is not meant to replace your big weekly grocery run, but it really shines when you are shopping for high quality organic produce, sustainable products, or plant based alternatives. The bulk food section looked great, and there were lots of local options for dairy, meat, eggs, and more. Parking is easy-ish, especially compared to other grocery stores in the area. Checkout was quick, and the staff were friendly and genuinely helpful when I had questions. Overall, if you are open to a different kind of grocery experience that is smaller, thoughtful, and centered on organic and local products, Mom's is definitely worth a visit. It may not be your everyday grocery store, but that might be exactly why it works.

Their employees were kind, welcoming, and happy to serve. I commend Mom's. They showed up to serve their community when things got tough. This is what running a successful business looks like. I highly recommend Mom's for their quality and service. I will continue to be a loyal customer.

They claim to source from local suppliers when possible and their beef is humanely and pasture-raised. They also prepare fresh sausage, weekly. Also available here is food for animals, smoked meats, animal fat for cooking, and grill products. The prices are a bit steep considering the meat is some of the highest quality you can get without having access to a local farm or raising and butchering your own livestock. The customer service is friendly. I do recommend researching and having knowledge of the specific cut of meat you desire before going to this butcher or any butcher for that matter. Butchers have a tendency to recommend alternatives when they are out of a specific cut. Many times they are spot on, but for the seemingly uneducated it can be an opportunity for bad businesses to offload a lesser or expiring cut for as much if not more expensive. On one visit I wanted boneless short rib and the butcher here appropriately recommended Denver cut which is the alternate name for this cut. A novice might not know this. Overall a good experience. I'll visit again when in the area.
