Baklava
Kaya A.

Delicious! I have been craving baklava, and this one did not disappoint. The flaky layers were perfect, and the subtle hint of rose in the aftertaste was delightful. I love this stand at Union Market. It is often overlooked, but the care and attention they put into their food deserve to be celebrated.

The wraps are great, big, made right in front of you, & they have kept the prices so reasonable!

This stand has the most reasonably priced and delicious food in Union Market. The wraps are huge and they taste so fresh. You can tell the owner cares about the ingredients. The desserts here are also amazing. Check out the market - he carries middle eastern staples and some prepared food which is priced so affordably.

Food: Food was okay. Warm but not hot. Not enough sauce or meat. Price (2 for 5) was usual for this dish Service: Quick, single person checkout. Simple. Quiet, not too talkative employee. Ambiance: It's like a takeout market. Not too complicated and not a lot much to see. Not too complicated and basic for what it is. I'm not itching to go back.

Beef and cheese pie

A nice little place. They're at the back of the building, and easily overlooked. I got one of their savory pies and asked the guy to heat it up for me. It was nice and fresh, and considering the price, was probably one of the better deals you can get at Union Market.

I stopped by Almaala Farms to check out their shop and saw the best looking knafeh that I had to try after my meal. For those that don't know what knafeh is, it is a Middle Eastern dessert with a shredded filo dough crust, a sweet cheese filling, topped with a flavored simple syrup. The owner was friendly and gave me a solid slice of the knafeh that was warmed to perfection. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the DC area!

Convenient grocery store with a lot to offer. I recently learned that this family and minority-owned grocery stand has served fresh produce in NE for over two decades, long before the indoor union market we see today. The stand sells all your staple produce for any meal, chopped fresh fruits if you're on the go, and speciality items and spices from the Middle East. The owner is a sweetheart and always excited to chat and even practice Arabic with students. Mr. Almaala and Almaala Farms is truly a gem!

Here's the latest and greatest vendor list from 2023: Timber Pizza - Scrumptious wood-fired pizza with a pillowy soft crust. I can't count on how many fingers and toes I've had the pizza at different farmer's markets! While the lines can get long 12:30pm, you only have to wait for 15 minutes. Taco Dirty To Me: Crispy battered cauliflower tempura tacos, bursting with flavor! Bun'd' Up - Delicious fried tofu and mushroom in squishy soft bao buns topped with microgreens, scallions, and a nice creamy aioli sauce. Light and tasty! Urban+ade - Refreshing lemonade with less sugar than classic lemonade. The Sage & Tarragon is my favorite! Veg Heaven - Decadent sweet treats, the dark chocolate cookies and brownies are the best! While the cakes are moist, they aren't as tasty. Taco Loco - Giant burritos are amazing! There's a swarm of people waiting in line, so be prepared to wait 10-15 min before ordering and then another 5 min for your order! The mango and watermelon juice are refreshing. Hipp Sippin' - Cold-pressed juices and acai bowls made to order. Ravenhook Bakery - Great selection of freshly baked loaves of bread and baked goods. DMV Empanadas - They sell out fast! While the empanadas has a nice crispy hard shell and with so many flavors to choose from, they are a bit bland and overloaded with bland cheese. The Spinach and Cheese or the Bacon and Cheese didn't quite hit the spot, hubby like the Chicken. Al Volo Cucina: While I wasn't a big fan of the greasy eggplant parm subs. I wish they brought back the fresh juices (the watermelon and mango juices) were amazing! Wonderful market with plenty of delicious and diverse options to choose from. Lines start to form between 12:30-1pm, come early!

So glad this wonderful market survived the pandemic and back in full swing! Here's the latest and greatest vendor list in 2025: - Timber Pizza: Delicious pizza! Cheese Please is my favorite followed by Green Monster. I can't count on how many fingers and toes I've had the pizza at different farmer's markets! The ginormous burritos are very filling and leave you in a delightful food coma! - Cocoi's Bakery - Unique Asian inspired cookies and donuts. While the Pandan brioche donut with a little creamy filling was fun to try, the Matcha Marshmallow cookie with white chocolate chips hit the spot! The cookie was a bit dense, but quite flavorful. The Ube Chocolate Chip Cookie with purple swirls didn't have much Ube flavor and the cookie was under baked. Lemonade Love - Refreshing lemonade, the Lavender is less sweet. - Little Austria: Strudel galore over a dozen apple and berry fruity varieties. The Apple Strudel is delicious and taste like apple pie without the processed sugary sweetness. The Spinach and Feta strudel was fun to try! - Capitol Kettle Corn: Fresh kettle corn made on the spot. Normally, we would have chatted with each vendor to learn about their produce or recipes. I would have greeted dogs and lingered around the canopies while looking over products. Since Covid has impacted our lives, the farmer's market experience was different. We wore masks and arrived early. I didn't want to be in a large crowd. My "socializing" these past few months has been with cashiers and chatting with the neighbor through the window. The staff and Mt. Vernon employees did a great job of roping off the area and placing signage explaining the rules. Duct tape was used to mark off six feet distance in the lines. There was only a handful of vendors. The produce looked great. It was priced slightly higher than the grocery store. The herbs were hubby's top choice. The vegetables were beautiful. The home made apple butter and apple sauce from Black Rock Orchard ($6 ea. or 2/$10) was worth the trip. The staff celebrated opening weekend by handing out facemasks. Most of the attendees were respectful of social distancing. Dogs were not allowed in the market area. It was a beautiful day. I was happy to enjoy the sunshine. I suggest making a reservation on Open Table and ordering online. The web site lists merchants and products for each location in the District. Orders must be completed by Friday. You need to wait in line to enter the market, but you can pick up your order and leave. Reservations aren't mandatory. It just makes your visit shorter. If you don't want to attend, some businesses will waive a delivery fee with minimum orders. Many years ago, my uncle used to visit each office on Capitol Hill, selling produce to staff members. Local farms need our business. I hope this farmer's market continues to expand.

It seems as if the only explanation for this was the rainy day on which we visited and catching the market on a slow day- at least we hoped this was the reason for the market being so sparse and empty - not many visitors at all (practically empty really). Safe to say, we will not be making another trek out here, at least not for this farmer's market specifically.

The Islander II eight day expedition of the Galapagos islands was a trip of a lifetime! 10/10!…read more Every day was curated to make the most out of our time there. I was able to hike volcanoes, kayak, snorkel, paddleboard, and interact with more species of animals than I could possibly have anticipated. The experience would not have been the same without the naturalists. Their knowledge of and love for their home and its preservation was palpable. They made sure we knew where to look and understood what we were seeing.-- not just turtles swimming but turtles mating, and what those mating behaviors were. I think I would have potentially missed so much without them. Each day was so full of activities that I didn't want to miss. I often felt a little rushed to get home from one activity and shower before getting to another. But I wouldn't have had it any other way. There was really only one day that we had where there was time to lounge on deck for an hour or so. I suppose I could have skipped an excursion to have more downtime, but there's not a single one that I did not feel was worthwhile.. On our expedition, the passengers ranged from multigenerational familles to young families to sisters and friends and couples in their 50's, 60's, 70s a80s. Attire was casual (sometimes there wasn't even really time to shower before happy hour i or dinner). But mostly I wore capris and tank tops or sweaters in the evenings and shorts and tee shirts or long sleeve shirts during the day. Overall, for me, this trip was spectacular! It's a "must do" for anyone that is able.
