At the annual chocolate festival in McLean, my hubby and I enjoyed a nice dark chocolate feast from Capital Candy Jar. So glad they still had an impressively wide selection at the end of the festival as many venders ran out. The Giant Peanut Butter Cup is very decadent with rich dark chocolate and creamy peanut butter. Just a couple of bites was more than satisfying and paced myself and able to devour the cup over a few days. The Dark Chocolate Covered Mint Oreo was delicious and my pick over the Dark Chocolate Covered Oreo, which didn't taste that different from a normal Oreo. Of the truffles, the Raspberry and Dark Chocolate Ganache were my favorites. The Hazelnut truffle was fun to try and reminded me of a Ferraro Rocher hazelnut truffles. I miss seeing Capital Candy Jar at the farmer's markets as many have shut down and excited to see them at more festivals and events post pandemic. This place is so cute. I get that other reviewers don't think it looks that great from the outside but I've been to a lot of places nationwide that have some of the best food/treats and a lot of them aren't picture-perfect DC style buildings. That being said, I had a really great experience here the other day! I bought some gifts for my family and loved the selection. Lots of unique candies, Washington landmark Oreos, political party Oreos, ice cream and more. From the outside this place is inconspicuous! We were pleasantly surprised when we got inside to see that it was a nice bright store with colorful candy and delicious ice cream. The Capital Candy Jar is one of the few businesses in Hill East. Located at 15th St and Constitution St NE, it's a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. They have been around for years but crafting locally made candies out of Union Kitchen in Ivy City. Fast forward to now, they have graduated from Union Kitchen and have made it as a company opening this permanent location where they make and sell their candies. The store is spacious with several corners of all of their candies from chocolate covered pretzel sticks to marshmallows. I recommend the milk chocolate covered Oreos. In addition to candies, they sell baked goods to satisfy any sweet tooth but they also have a few savory pastries like mushroom, garlic, and cheese muffins. They also sell coffee from Zekes, a local roastery. They aren't any seats, but I think it's meant to be a come and go place. read more

This place is my go-to for gifts and a coffee on the run. I haven't tried the giant s'mores but the toffee-covered almonds were an enormous hit when visiting a friend in this hospital. There are no seats inside, so they dont want you to linger, but service is on the slower side. If you're running to catch the metro you should expect a delay here as they actually want to talk to you and have some human interaction. It's weird, I know, but I promise it's actually nice. Just budget a couple of extra minutes. I keep hoping I'll have a work event to plan so I can recommend them there! read more

I came here to get my free ice cream scoop after running the rock and roll half marathon. It's small and quaint inside. I asked the guy who was working there to try two flavors and he seemed annoyed. I then asked him what his favorite flavor was and he said "I work out I don't eat this kind of stuff. Also when you work here you don't eat this, like when you work at a chicken place you think workers always eat the food there?" Like dang sorry for asking. I felt annoyed so I just got the marionberry jubilee ice cream flavor which was amazing but a tiny scoop. Ate it in like two bites. Cute candy and ice cream shop on Captiol Hill. They distribute both through wholesale and at their brick and mortar I visited today with my friend. They have a vast selection of chocolates and candy they make from scratch right within their shop. Also, when you look at the cooler, you will see that they have different types of root beers as well. These root beers are from all over the United States. That had a special today going on where if you buy 4 root beers, it would only cost $10. Typically I wouldn't partake in such thing because I think that's a little steep, but my friend and I did so, and we were happy to do so. Today they were having a $1.50 on all scoops where they distribute both Jenny's Ice Cream and Ice Cream Jubilee. I prefer Ice Cream Jubilee any day and was happy to have some of their passion fruit guava sorbet as my treat. My friend went for the blueberry swirl and passion fruit guava sorbet himself. For his mom, he ordered the bourbon banana ice cream. Outside they have a patio seating with several umbrellas over them. It was a beautiful day today so we decided to eat outside. There is no seating inside. This is definitely a place for you come and grab your ice cream and go. Chocolates range from as little as $3 to $22. My homemade peanut butter cup was $4. It was extremely yum, but totally worth it. Absolutely delicious and happy to devour while waiting in the long line. The owner is super nice. He said he started making candy when he was 14. Needless to say he's got a good product going. Bring the kids and friends. Enjoy an honest sweet treat with reasonable prices for the area. read more

Capital Candy Jar is charming and delicious--on the inside! I'm hoping that this neighborhood corner candy shop sticks around for years to come, because it's made out of the right stuff (sugar). However, I do continuously wonder why the outside of the shop isn't as charming as the inside. It looks a bit scary from the outside. There is a sign, but it's not exactly welcoming. A bright mural or even better signs (?) would make a big difference. I want to support this place, and this is friendly feedback. The inside of Capital Candy Jar is large, with a small front area and from what I can tell, a candy-making space in the back. There are not tables inside, but there would be room to add them in the future, which would also be an inviting touch. Favorite treat: dark chocolate covered jumbo peanut butter cups. MMM! What a wonderful neighborhood place! We stopped by yesterday to buy some ice cream for our favorite 3 year old, not realizing they were closed on Mondays. I saw a piece on ME TV this am about the Capital Candy Jar and saw quite a few things I want to try. I mainly wanted to try the caramel popcorn and chocolate giant peanut butter cups. I was sorry to read that they don't do delivery, as I live in Southern Maryland and don't think I could make a special trip all the way down there just for candy. I'm looking at The Capital Candy Jar website and it says the Giant Peanut Butter Cups are "5 times the size of peanut butter cups you find from the big national brands." I guess that means I ate 5 peanut cups in 15 seconds. I've had their s'mores at events a couple of times, but the peanut butter cup was the first piece of candy I tried from them. Here is a play-by-play of my experience eating the candy: -This is really big so I will only take one bite -(Takes a bite) Oh, it's like real peanut butter in here, not that "crumbly peanut stuff" (as Capital Candy Jar calls it) I love. I'm a little disappointed. It's just like eating peanut butter from a jar. -(Takes a second taste of the real peanut butter). Actually this peanut butter is way better than peanut butter from a jar. It's like a light mousse. -(Gobbles up the rest of the Peanut Butter Cup). I probably shouldn't have just looked up where to find Capital Candy Jar in Arlington. read more

This review is for wedding favors. The store was easy to work with, responding within minutes whenever I reached out and making sure the details were just right. Most importantly, everyone loved eating the favors! We went with the Dark Chocolate Covered Nutter Butters instead of the Oreos. My reasoning was that the people who tore into their favors after dinner might not want a heavy Oreo, the Nutter Butters stood up in the heat better than the truffles and other chocolate options, and it was an unexpected flavor. Our guests talked about them at the wedding and for days after. You could hear them happily sigh when they took their first bites. The Capital Candy Jar had quickly sourced little boxes for each Nutter Butter at a reasonable price (we're not diy enough to want to put together 120 of those puppies). We had a lot of out-of-town guests who were dazzled by everything D.C., and I wanted to include stickers with their logo that also made it clear there were peanut products in the favors. Because the logo stickers were a bit unusual for a wedding favor, the store confirmed that multiple times. When we went in to sample options, I fell in love with their peanuts covered in peanut butter and chocolate and all their available truffles. I'd say if you have a sweet tooth you need to stop by at least once. read more

And, I'll be damned, but the Capital Candy Jar can hold its own against the big guys. It's darn good. My favorites? The chocolate dipped oreos. The chocolate dipped pretzels. And the barks. Is this naturally sourced, organic, hand raised, individually numbered, pretentious cocoa silliness? No, it's not. I've had Capital Candy Jar products from Glen's Garden Market in Dupont and at markets such as the H Street festival and the holiday market in Chinatown. The products, like chocolate dipped Oreos and pretzels, all seem to be made with high quality ingredients and definitely satisfy sweet tooth cravings - there's a ton of sugar and then some! The giant s'mores at markets are warm and messy, but worth it, and they will give you a wet wipe to help with the sticky fingers. Definitely give them a try! read more

The candy and other baked selections are very pricey but very good. However, I am apparently not the market being aimed at. I am a long time neighborhood resident and not one of the gentrifiers. Therefore, the customer service leaves a lot to be desired. My last purchase was so rushed that I wasn't even offered my change. Yummmm Capital Candy Jar is SO DELICIOUS! They have marshmallows and divinity in all kinds of crazy flavors. I got a strawberry one and it was slightly too big for me to finish in one sitting, so I cut it up and floated it in my mocha latte the next morning - Best.Idea.Ever.
