Soo good. Must have along with either turnovers or the cinnamon apple donuts. It is a family owned orchard so they don't run super staffed all the time like a commercial business. We came to Union Orchard specifically to pick our own apples. Overall, we had a nice time, but…read morethere are a few things I wish we had known beforehand. When we arrived, the tractor that takes you out to the orchard wasn't running because the employee who drives it had gone into town for an errand, so we ended up waiting about an hour before we could go pick apples. The U-pick process could also use some clearer directions or signage. It wasn't obvious where to get bags, where or when to pay, or how to get on the tractor ride. We had to ask several different employees before we figured everything out. We had also checked the ripening schedule on the website ahead of time because we were hoping to pick specific varieties. Apparently the weather changed the schedule this year, so those varieties weren't available to pick when we came. Totally understandable that Mother Nature doesn't follow a schedule, but an updated availability list online would have been really helpful, especially for people driving a distance to visit. The country store itself is very cute and has a lot of old-fashioned charm. There are tons of tempting treats like apple cider donuts, pies, bread pudding, caramel apples, jams, local popcorn, cider and more. Prices are definitely on the higher side, including the U-pick apples at around $24 per peck, so I'd consider this more of a fun seasonal splurge than somewhere we'd shop regularly. It is a smaller orchard, so outside of special events, expect the main attractions to be apple picking and the country store. There's also a small playground geared toward very young kids, a hay bale maze and a couple of cute photo opportunities. We enjoyed getting out into the orchard and coming home with fresh apples, and the country store is charming. With some clearer U-pick signage and more up-to-date information online about what's actually available for picking, the experience could be much smoother.

Penn Drug has been in business since before the civil war, owned and operated by the same family. In addition to a full service pharmacy, Penn Drug has an old fashioned 'soda fountain" where you can get authentic, hand made malts. sodas, phosphates and floats. Like many "old style" Drug Stores (before the"big box" invasion) Penn's carries a little bit of everything. You'll often find 91 year old Bill Penn still behind the pharmacy counter, filling prescriptions as he has since the 50's. Never too busy to answer questions about your medications or discuss current affairs in our little town, Bill is a community icon! Whether you're in the area for "Iowa's Championship Rodeo" or a leisurely picnic at Waughbonsie State Park (with magnificent views of the Missouri river bottom from the scenic overlook). A trip to Penn Drug for a malt or a soda, hand made and simply delicious, is a must in a visit to an often overlooked corner of Iowa, less than an hours' drive from the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro area. But there's no reason for 2 baristas to ignore us at drive thru ... it started at the ordering screen. Delayed 20-30 seconds between replies. When we pulled up to the window and they gave us the energy drink it was missing the cream and my wife called them 3 times and then I called them 2 times and we got 0 reaction and let me remind you her back was 2 inches away from the open drive thru window.... There was a third one that came by to grab something she looked at us and we got her attention for extra cream that was missed in our drink. And when we asked for hot sauce packets they said they ran out and only had ONE which I find hilarious.
