We went for lunch and my wife had the Ubon chicken soup and I had the Beef chimichurri salad. We loved them both! The Dog Spot is a gastronomical gem hidden in plain sight. At first glance it's a gift store for dog owners, but tucked away in the back beyond all the merchandise is a kitchen. We stopped in here last week on a visit to Joseph, OR after reading so many 5 star reviews. Such an odd concept-a pet shop/Asian fusion cafe. I am always on the hunt for great food and will brake for bahn mi sandwiches so I drug my family here and plunked them down at the outside tables promising a gastronomic delight. There was a bit of a wait- we ordered 3 bahn mi sandos and 2 orders of the fried rice. When the food arrived my take on us was it was a good spicy chicken(you could choose pork)sandwich. It did not resemble any bahn mi I have ever had but it was a good sandwich. My kids like the fried rice pretty well (mmm... love the purple rice and kimchi). Recently a couple of friends took me on a road trip to Eastern Oregon for my 70th birthday (thank goodness for friends, right?) and finding this little cafe tucked into a dog supply store was definitely a highlight of the food part of the trip. We sat at a little table on the sidewalk because we had 2 dogs with us and because state law doesn't allow dogs inside food establishments... but the afternoon was gorgeous and sunny so we probably would have sat outside anyway :D Our server was very nice and was helpful with the menu (turns out she's the owner of the shop/cafe). She even brought out a dish of water for the dogs - and kept it topped off since the dogs were drinking a lot of water on this warm summer afternoon. I ordered the Spicy Pineapple Shrimp Street Tacos (Mexican white shrimp, onions, peppers, pineapple and a sweet chili/soy sauce over slaw on flour tortillas) - sooooo good! I can't remember what my friends ordered and I didn't take notes but I do remember that they said their food was good. Sorry I don't have any more specific information. Their menu changes regularly (check out their webpage for what's being served this week) and I'm going out on a limb here but I think everything on their menu will be just as tasty as those Spicy Shrimp Tacos were. After we finished eating, we poked around the little shop inside - lots of dog-related toys, food, accessories, etc. - and then, bellies full, we made our way home to our AirBnB for the night. Choose this place due to the wonderful yelp reviews. After visiting I can say that does not make sense! Started out a bit eccentric but a fun vibe a pet gift shop and cafe in the same place, I'm in!! We were quickly seated out on the patio which was great for people watching. When our server finally came to take our drink order we placed our lunch order at the same time. She did ask if we were in a hurry & we weren't so said no. Finally the drinks came out. And we waited and waited and waited and waited.... And then we waited some more! She brought out salt and pepper. And then a while later napkins and silverware. We waited some more. Everyone was waiting. She came back again and said it would be soon, did we want another round so we said yes. She brought the drinks and we waited some more. At this point it had been an hour and a half since we were seated! At an hour 45 minutes it started to rain so we picked up our drinks and silverware and moved inside. She was able to seat us after she cleared off a pile of merchandise from a table. There are only 6 tables at the whole restaurant inside and out. Finally lunch arrived at almost the 2 hour mark. Mind you it was soup and a toasted sandwich. The soup was fine, but the sandwich was so over toasted it cut the roof of my mouth and was too salty. Also it was served alone. No chips, no fries and no salad just a $18 sandwich that took over 2 hours to prepare. She did offer to give us dessert or take off the 2nd round of drinks as an effort to make it right. We couldn't stay the sandwich was not good and the overall feeling by now had faded. So we paid and left. Would never ever go back. She mentioned they got a new stove yesterday and the cook was trying to figure out how to use it and that it was an unusualy busy day with the retail gift shop. The best crazy part of the whole adventure was the bathroom. Wayyyy in the back of the shop down the hallway lined with lord knows what junk piled high I assure you. Overall we wasted 2 hours and walked away hungry with a total vibe kill. So incredibly sad! read more

This place is super cute, unique, and the service is great. However, it can be a bit confusing as it resembles a pet shop more than a restaurant. My partner decided to try the chorizo tacos, while I opted for the morel and gnocchi dish. Regrettably, it appeared that the morels in my dish were not fully cooked, as I fell quite ill a few hours later and throughout the night. We stopped by as the reviews were great and we were camping nearby. Would return but opt for a different dish next time. read more

Small little cafe tucked inside dog store in Joseph Oregon. Interesting Menu with a mix of various Asian fusion food. We were informed they change menu every 2 weeks. We took 3 items - chorizo and potato taco, Vietnamese banh mi and bison rogan Josh. Very generous portions and can easily feed 4 pax. Vietnamese banh mi was a real winner. Rogan Josh was close to authentic. Kudos to chef who is learning to cook Indian food and giving it his best. Chorizo and potato taco was bit off but kids loved it. This place is amazing! The thought of a restaurant in a pet supply store seems (and looks) somewhat unappealing. BUT, based on the diversity of the menu, we walked past the leashes, collars, and dog beds and ordered up. Each of the dishes we ordered were unique and very, very tasty. The chef nailed the flavors of different cultures: Mexican chorizo, Italian Puttanesca, Thai asparagus. The service was also incredible. We ate here twice during our stay in Joseph. I had the gumbo the first time and the chicken and dumplings the second. The gumbo had a dark, rich with a nice kick while the chicken and dumplings was warm and hearty on a cold day. One of the most unique places Ive ever ate at. The food is prepared so well, with such care, and an eye on your health as well. International flavors mixed with high quality ingredients. I am incredibly sensitive to cheap oils and cheap ingredients so eating out is always a challenge and a bit of a risk. Zero problems with there food. It was so good. We went back the next day and ate there again. We where in town to meet a breeder and pick up a new puppy. This place was not part of the plan but wow are we glad we crossed paths with this place. Well the drive is a bit long from Tacoma but Worth the Journey! It is Thai week and the Tamarind Duck was sweet savory tangy with lots of tamarind! Try all of the in-house chili sauces. The chicken coconut soup was tasty and full of flavor. Save room for dessert especially the cheesecake! Great funky ambience and a truly unique 5 star bathroom! We dropped in for lunch today and really enjoyed the experience. The menu updates weekly, which is awesome so this week we tried the Bun Chay - Vietnamese Hot Noodle Bowl, and Malaysian Caramel Shrimp (the couple next to us ordered the exact same thing!). Both dishes were freshly prepared, deeply layered in textures and flavors, and satisfyingly delicious. The aromas from the kitchen are mesmerizing, not shy of garlic here, my wife is from Gilroy! We sat outside with our dog (they are obviously dog friendly), the service is super friendly, chill and laid back environment, plenty of time for two beers before our food arrived and that's okay! Don't plan to eat here if you're in a hurry....but you'd be missing out! Also - the shop is chock full of country and pet themed décor, and gifts worth buying! No photos necessary - just go there. My husband and I wandered in here and this afternoon and had the best lunch. It doesn't seem like a restaurant but a pet store with everything and anything one could need for their pet. We sat inside and had the best waitress. She was hospitable, funny, and kind. I ordered a sangria that was made from cranberry cider and my husband order a beer. I had Korean shrimp tacos which were perfect and my husband had the bahn mi sandwich which he barely talked while eating it was so good. WOW! How do I explain this amazing find? In one word: PHENOMENAL!! This little restaurant is a diamond in the ruff! Our party of two enjoyed duck tacos and Thai chicken soup for dinner. This was my first time enjoying duck and I found it to be very similar to pork. The tacos were prepared with shredded meat, lettuce, a light pico de Gallo and pineapple. The soup had delicious flavors of ginger, lemongrass, turmeric, coconut milk and chicken. For dessert we treated ourselves to the housemade lemon hibiscus cheesecake- hinting at a bit of tart savory flavors- and coconut cream pie- that was creamy and delicious. The dining room was neat and tidy, the service was excellent, the chef and staff were very pleasant and willing to talk and share stories, as well as knowledgeable about their dishes and pairings. This incredibly stocked pet boutique and bistro is a MUST DO; catered to my vegan husband with a delicious Vegan Bahn Mi sandwich and I experienced the BEST.GODDAMN.TACOS.EVER. And......I am from and live in Southern CA!!!! They keep some items like their Pork Bahn Mi and Argentinian Chimichurri Beef Salad (next time!) on the menu regularly, but this husband and wife duo change up the menu each week with incredible specials such as the Piri Piri Chicken Street Tacos that I had which featured the husbands own housemade spice blend. It seems everything is made in house here, from the mini flour tortillas to the kimchi! A pet supply store that hides a wonderful restaurant cooking up homemade dishes using fresh local ingredients and at some great prices. Ordered their mushrooms and Thai green beans for an app and then shared the siciliano lasagna...all were incredible until we had the coconut cream pie for dessert and that crushed it. We went for a late lunch today. Let me just say this: the entire experience was OUT OF THIS WORLD! We were greeted with friendly smiles and very engaging people (one of the owners Amy Wolf and a member of the wait staff). They were all so nice and informative. The other owner/chef Arion Canniff later came out and talked to us for a long time. What an interesting, informative and amazing experience. He is so engaging and has a wealth of high-end culinary experience and celebrity connections. He took the time to explain his approach of making everything from scratch, including his own spices. Such a terrific character and talent. Now to the food: we had an Argentinian beef salad (made w/ chimichurri) and a banh mi sandwich (made with fresh kimchi). Yes, the kimchi is a creative touch that blends the tastes of different culinary traditions compared to the standard Vietnamese staple. Wow. The flavors of both were like a party to the palate. Carefully blended spice/flavor profiles with an acidic structure that gets tempered with perfectly-cooked proteins, fresh veggies, and love. We finished with amazing sweets: a blood orange chocolate cheesecake and a sour cream-lemon pie. After talking about food for a while, the owner then brought us their last piece of orange-basil cheesecake to try...unprompted and on the house. It was such a kind gesture...by people who truly love creating a serving great food. All desserts were carefully constructed, incredibly well-flavored, and not too sweet. In a word, they were perfect...so much so that we took 5 different desserts back to our daughter's house to share with neighbors tomorrow. If I lived near Joseph, this place would get lots of my money...frequently! I can not recommend them more highly!!! If you are in Joseph, do yourself a favor and visit them. Crazy location for a restaurant but don't let that stop you from trying this place. The food is absolutely delicious. We had the chicken lasagna with Alfredo sauce and the tai noodles. We shared. I know, sounds like weird dishes to share but the food is so good it works. We spoke to the chef and alot of the ingredients are made in house, and you can tell they are. And we had the in house made New York cheesecake and it was delicious. Also great service. Felt like we were being served by the owners, which I think was the case. We saw great reviews so we had to come in and try this spot. We arrived for dinner after a day up the mountain. The spot is cute which has half of the restaurant dedicated as a shop for four legged friends. The chef was excited to speak to us when we arrived and he informed us of their signature banh mi which takes the traditional banh mi and adds a Korean fusion to it by adding Kim chi. The same can be said about other highlights, shrimp cups which add a very nice sambal spice to it. The mushroom cups were another highlight, buttery and flavorful. Everything we tried was exceptional and the menu will probably change when you arrive as it is swapped out reguarly. This also includes their many desserts. Our table struggled to choose which dessert we wanted as they all sounded so interesting. We ended up choosing almost every dessert on the menu. The highlights for me were the sour cream lemon pie. A crowd favorite we were told. I also really enjoyed the root beer cheesecake which was one of the many interesting flavors of cheesecake the chef makes. He has a dessert business where he's made a whopping 170+ different flavors. I would love to try more of them as the root beer was surprisingly spot on in flavor.
