Dropped a couple of stars for poor, surly service the second time around. After being encouraged to make a reservation the last time I was there (when I told them we'd be back with a group of six people next time)-- we walked into a mostly empty bar. (There were only two people sitting at the bar and two at a table when we walked in.) Our reservation was for 5 pm. Dinner was at 6pm around the corner. Confused, I walked up to the bar thinking maybe they weren't open yet. (They opened at 3pm) I told the barkeep we had a reservation and asked where we should sit. I thought maybe they had a designated area for larger groups. He didn't even look up and gestured with his hand to sit anywhere you wanted. We sat at a table that could accommodate six people and waited for a server. I was told the last time that there was a server for people at tables. After 10 minutes, I went back to the bar and ordered drinks from the same barkeep. He told me that the server starts at 5pm. A server never showed up and we were there until 6pm. He could have cared less. Heavy drapes were partially closed at the windows to keep the bright sunlight from coming in where the tables are located. The only other guy working there (barback?) decided to fling them open which caused us and other people to move to different tables because it was so uncomfortably bright and warm. We asked him to partially close them a bit to get the sun out of our eyes and he said, "No" and walked away. Again, this one too could have cared less. If you live in SF, you have likely experienced this attitude that seems to permeate the service industry here. There is often an attitude where the customer comes second. Time to own it and for people to start asking for better service. read more

Wow, a perfect way to end a Saturday night. I was looking to find a speakeasy-esque vibe and stumbled Devil's Acre, and boy was I in a for treat. The attention to detail in the bar and the spacious candlelit seating captivated my attention. The bartenders are also very attentive! {Really more like 3.5 stars} Came here early on a Saturday. I was really excited to try this bar so let me explain the 3 stars. I probably would have given it at least four if the service was better. When we walked in it looked like there was only one bartender working, though the bar had a decent amount of people at it. We chose a table and studied the menu for a bit. We figured there was no table service but the bartender came over to us and immediately said "I need to see your ID's". No hello first or anything. So right there the service was pretty annoying. We were told we'd have to go to the bar to ordered (which we figured) so after deciding my friend and I went up to the bar to order. At this point the bartender was very friendly and let me even try the sherry before ordering the Sherry Cobbler. The drink was SO good. The amount of effort that went into making it was great. It was beautiful and delicious. My friends gin drink was also good and my husbands Three Sworn Enemies was not only beautiful it smelled and tasted amazing. After we finished those drinks my husband went back up to the bar to see if they would make him a Penicillin to which the bartender stated "NO". He felt like she was pretty rude and thought the customer service was terrible. He came back with 2 beers and was pretty disappointed. Also, by this time the bar was getting more and more crowded and still they only had one bartender. We didn't see another bartender come until almost 5:00. So, that woman was behind the bar for two hours serving everyone herself. I think she was overwhelmed and understaffed which is too bad because while the drinks were amazing and wonderfully crafted the service was lacking. When you're paying $10+ for a drink you hope the person making it is friendly. The service didn't completely ruin the experience by any means though and I would definitely come back in the future. Their menu was large and really fun. Lots more drinks I'd like to try. Also there bathroom was really cool and clean which I appreciate! read more

This place deserves 6 stars! This place is a sister bar of Burbon and Branch, but the prices are a lot less. Love that! The biggest difference between this bar and other speakeasies is that this bar is set during the Barbary Coast era. While, speakeasies were during the 1920's-early 1930's, the Barbary coast was from 1860's-early 1900's. They have 2 seating areas: The main one on the ground level, and a smaller one downstairs. You will need reservations for the ground level seating area, but the downstairs is open seating. There is also a bar on both floors. I started with the burbon crusta, which had burbon, lemon, orchard syrup, orange curacao, maraschino, and banker's bitters. This was quite a refreshing and delicious drink. The cost was $10. Side note: The recipe for this cocktail also came on all the coasters. I also shared the sherry cobbler (sherry, lemon-lime syrup, pebble ice, fruit and mint), again another $10 drink. This one took a few sips to get use to (could be because burbon was the last thing on my palate), but then it became really really good! The service was great. Quick to your table, and had some great suggestions. She even helped to spruce up my burbon crusta cocktail halfway through by adding some Love Potion to it, to help change the flavor of it. When we went the soda machine was still being installed, so couldn't try some of their elixirs/sodas. But I do want to go back and try them. You can use them to create your own cocktail. Choose an elixir and then a liquor. Love the idea. I can't wait to go back again soon! read more

At the mature age of 30 I never thought I'd find myself in North Beach on a Saturday night. I mean, isn't that like so five years ago? At least for me it was. These days I'm more likely to be shaking my own cocktails at home and entertaining than going out on the town. Or I may be covered in cat fur searching for something decent to watch on Netflix. Who knows? North Beach on a Saturday or any day of the week is now vastly improved with the newly opened Devil's Acre, the newest and shiniest watering hole from the Future Bars crew. Like everything they do, this place is a real stunner. Gorgeous and imposing carved bar, amazing sconces and chandeliers, and grand windows facing Columbus. Like all of their bars, the light is low and the attention to detail is fine. You can peruse the many pages of the Devil's Acre 'almanac' to pick your poison. The Barbary Coast Originals section and the Period Specific Classics were my go to categories, but there are some period appropriate non-alcoholic tonics at the back of the menu including an Ammonia Coke with aromatic spirits of ammonia. Say what? So much to learn. The Golden Era, a perfectly perky refreshment of gin, applejack and dry vermouth with orchard syrup (don't know what it is but I like it) was my favorite of the evening, but my sweetie's Paramour, a gin, Campari and chartreuse offering was a treat too. Our friend even had gold dust in her cocktail called Three Sworn Enemies, a bitter bourbon drink apparently fortified by little flecks of gold. While all of these elements would lend themselves well to an intimate speakeasy, the Devil's Acre was oppressively loud. Granted it was a Saturday and it is North Beach, and password protecting your bar is like so three years ago, but I was expecting something a bit more low key and less noisy. We came to catch up with friends but ended up having to do most of it later after leaving. But, reserved seats through Seat Me allowed us to have our own table of four at a prime time, and for that I was grateful. Our servers were a bit overwhelmed with the chaos but they had smiles on their faces and were very congenial. All cocktail connoisseurs and queens must stop by, preferably not on a weekend night. read more

Wow this might be my favorite bar in SF. I'm a huge cocktail nut (heh) and can definitely appreciate a well crafted drink in a nice lounge environment. They have a huge selection of spirits and the specialty drinks that I tried are all delicious. I had the Bourbon Crusta, Clover Leaf, Sherry Cobbler, and Pisco Punch. The sugar coated rum of the Bourbon Crusta was a great touch, but my favorite drink had to be the Sherry Cobbler. They have a bushel of mint sticking out of the drink so you can bury your nose into the mint while you take a sip out it - great touch! They have a really cool Barbary Coast theme. I can't get enough of their menu! Of course it has all the listings for drinks, but it's designed like an old-fashioned brochure and also includes cool extras like astrological signs and advertisements for other local businesses (in old-timey style). read more

Swanky bar, slightly confused space. Top notch service. Ask and ye shall receive! ...the rundown on sprits, bitters, your beverage selection, you name it. Table service (and reservations) if that's your thing. A few small tables and standing room if it's not. Menu options to keep you coming back with a wide variety of spirits, tinctures, old fashioned sodas (non-alcoholic), hangover cures, and a sprinkling of gold dust. Gold dust for the gold rush (cocktails)? Perhaps. Either way, a nice touch, never tacky. Bar area is well thought out and designed. Main area has a wall of old-timey decor, think old pharmacy canisters lining the shelves, brass accents and blue-grays throughout, but it doesn't feel warm or have much going on. It just feels like a big room with lots of tables. A ramp leading into the bar area with a couple stairs down to the main seating (reservations area). Why it couldn't all by level? Who knows. Tiny tables in the bar area might be your best bet for having a little one-on-one, but good luck snagging one once people realize this is the new 'it' spot on Columbus. In the meantime, I'll keep coming back. And keep an eye out for the bar down below... because one bar is never enough when it's this good. read more

This is an interesting new bar in San Francisco that is styled like an old apothecary bar. The drinks are very good. I didn't find the atmosphere very comfortable. It was a bit too small and spaced out strangely. I like that I could get reservations and actually get seated quickly. There is a cocktail that features gold dust, which is just way cool. Not gonna lie, what caught my interest in The Devil's Acre was that sparkly gold drink! After seeing pictures I knew I wanted it! We came on a Thursday evening around 8pm and there was plenty of seating and room both upstairs and downstairs. The sparkly gold drink is the Three Sworn Enemies. Since I'm not really a fan of bourbon, I ordered Call a Treuse. The Three Sworn Enemies is STRONG. It tasted like straight alcohol, I could barely handle a sip. BUT IT'S SO PRETTY!!! Luckily the bf was able to drink it (always taking one for the team =P) but he wasn't a fan of the bourbon that they used. I absolutely loved the Call a Treuse. It was light and tasty. Would recommend this drink! The service was incredibly slow, even though there weren't many people at the bar at all. The Devil's Acre is another excellent creation from the Future Bars team; this particular one goes with a Barbery Coast theme. The venue has a very large upstairs with a bar and plenty of reserved table seating. Unlike Bourbon & Branch, it's fairly easy to get weekend table reservations for various group sizes even for the same day. (There is also a downstairs bar area, but I have yet to try that one out yet.) The attention to detail in all the aspects of the bar is so remarkable! The (lengthy) drink menu is designed as a period-specific almanac and even has period-specific advertisements in it. The drinks are served with cloth napkins. The skewers used for drinks with fruit toppings have pearls on them. Oh, and the table lanterns are fully functional with a knob to adjust the flame height. I think we had a little too much fun with the lanterns on our first visit and earned a warning from our server...oops! The drinks themselves are quite amazing. I'm still working my way through the menu, but some of my favorites are the Bourbon Crusta, Call a Treuse and Three Sworn Enemies. You must try Three Sworn Enemies, which is made with gold dust, for an additional visual treat! One tip: as the wait for drinks can take a while, plan ahead and order your next drink before you're done with your current one. That said, the wait has never been excessive on any of my trips here and the quality of the drinks makes it well worth the extra time. Simply put, this is one of my favorite places in the Bay Area to grab a drink with friends. read more

This is it !!! One of the best spots I've been at since I've been here, very cool ambiance and it resembles somewhat of a hipster speakeasy. I ordered a boulevardier and my fiance ordered a sherry cobbler, the execution and craftmanship on the drinks were great, have I had a better boulevardier before? Mmmm yes however this will definitely do. It's also got a sitting area that you can enjoy your drinks, the liquors they use are higher grade which that's what you'd expect since you're not getting a typical well drink. Heard about this bar through fellow yelper/bartender Brian H. and had to take the soonest opportunity to visit. Came here last friday around 11. No line or wait, but once we got inside, we saw it was PACKED. Luckily, I had a clear path to the bar and was quickly addressed by the lady bartender (sorry, I don't remember your name!). Me being me, I chose the drink that had bourbon and GOLD DUST-- "Three Sworn Enemies". I was kinda disappointed when I got the drink and I didn't see any gold dust.. but second time around from the downstairs bar, there was plenty of gold shimmering in my glass :) I got another drink that night too but can't recall.... I just know everything I sipped on that night was tasty, not watered-down, and cheap! Anyway, the upstairs is good for groups (big groups--make a reservation) because it's more lively and loud. However, if you sneak down the stairs to the side of the bar, you'll find a much quieter chill vibe. Better for one-on-one time, they were playing some old school music that night. There's a small bar, a few small tables (open seating) and maybe 10? stools along the walls. P.S. I was told I totally messed up by not trying any of their sodas. So you should definitely try one. As bars go, this one has a lot going for it. The bartenders look very cutting edge--they all have the requisite shaved head, full beard, and extensive tats. They also know their craft. I've been to plenty of big-city speakeasies and these guys compare pretty favorably in terms of pure mixology. Their custom cocktails are imaginative and the ones we had were all delicious, though they ran the gamut from light to 'spiritous' and the server was very precise in describing them to us in detail. The only place they messed up is that we had a bigger party so we called for a reservation. When we got there, the only person visible in the bar was the bartender, who didn't know about the reservation, and every table had a sign that said "reserved" on it, so we didn't know where to sit. The bartender didn't know either, so we commandeered a few tables and pulled them together. When the server showed up she said it wasn't where they wanted to put us but they weren't going to move us either. Not a big deal, nobody died or went to prison, but not quite the 5-star performance. I'd definitely recommend it though. A nice place with a good vibe and great drinks. read more

When you walk in, you make a right and walk through all the tables and you'll see a set of poorly lit stairs. Take them down and you'll reach an apothecary style bar. The drinks are very strong and very tasty. I got the St. Croix Fix, which was a rum based pineapple drink. My friend ordered the Three Sworn Enemies, a bourbon based drink with poppy liquor and gold flakes. We called it the hipster viniq. It was shimmery and very very strong. I don't think think place has an happy hour but the prices really aren't that bad. You're looking to pay $9-11 for their specialty cocktails. You'll really only need 1 or 2 to get to a good level of intoxication. read more

I love this new addition to the North Beach neighborhood, went this weekend for late night drinks with a friend. The place is dark and classy, a little loud, but you can still hear the playlist - other patrons even started singing along when Tiny Dancer came on. The menu was so cool! Its a rather wide book (compared to a typical one-pager), and even had ads for other bars in the area. My friend and I enjoyed reading the horoscopes in the menu as well. The drinks came out and were very tasty, but again, I was most impressed with the finishing touches. I had a cocktail up, and my friend had one with pebble ice - only she got a coaster. Also, there was a pearl at the end of the toothpick holding fruit in her glass! Found this place on Yelp and marked it as a must-go during my recent trip to the Bay area. My friends and I arrived for our 9pm reservation on a Thursday. The decor and aesthetics are completely original. They've got everything from vintage scientist eye droppers to more than 100 century-old chemists canisters. And if you want the legit speakeasy experience, head down to basement bar hidden down an unmarked staircase in the back. Thirsty? Hell yes we were. In fitting with the apothecary theme, all cocktails are presented as "remedies" on the menu. Very fun and inventive. Collectively, the five of us ordered about 15 drinks total (it's a miracle we didn't black out). But anyway, those definitely worthy of a mention were the The Golden Age, Pisco Punch, Bourbon Crusta, and Three Sworn Enemies. All were well-executed and well-balanced. I was particularly taken with the Three Sworn Enemies, not only because I'm a complete sucker for old fashions, but there's actual edible gold dust in the drink. Gold, son!! Complete novetly, I know, but c'mon who doesn't love shiny things? To cap off the evening, I went off menu asked for a spicy gin-based cocktail. SO GLAD I DID. The waitress came back with a concoction of gin, ghost pepper tincture, lime juice, and raspberry puree. Wow...the drink was beyond bonkers. Fruity/spicy/boozy ambrosia. The mixologists are truly masters of their craft. Seriously, forget bar-hopping. Devil's Acre is a "last stop" (or "only stop") kind of place, and not for just -A- drink.
