I was in SF for business for a few days a few weeks ago, and I was pretty excited to discover that there was a great, but totally under-the-radar, bar, literally across the street from the hotel I was staying in - so I actually popped in here twice while I was there, and had to exert a lot of self-control to stop myself from coming back a third time (it *was* still a work day, even if I was in SF).
It's got a great laid-back vibe, plenty of space, and the bartender when I was there was pretty awesome. There are two questions I ask to determine the quality of an unknown bar like this, that looks properly "craft" but where I'm not sure. The answer to my first question, whether he likes playing around with drinks based on vague requests: if it isn't busy then sure, otherwise order off the menu (that is a good answer). Second question, can he make a vieux carre? Of course, he said slightly annoyedly, like who doesn't? (Answer: way too many people, even at really good bars sometimes.) So I got a vieux carre, and it was delicious ($12, pretty standard price for a vieux carre).
The other thing I look for at places like this is really *weird* drinks, the sort of thing where I have to look up half the ingredients, and they only had one when I was there, but it was definitely a wacky one - made with "shiso-infused singani" (I had to look up both of those - it's a Bolivian spirit distilled from muscat grapes, infused with a Japanese herb in the mint family). Super good drink, too!
Anyway, the coolest unique thing they advertise here is that they make their vermouths in-house, so when I came back, I asked for something spirit-forward using mescal and their house vermouth, and I forget exactly what he made, but it was also delicious, and $10, which I thought was a *more* than reasonable price for the quality, especially considering I was also in SF. (That was the reason I almost came back a third time - to get another one of that same drink the next night, before I left.)
My only complaint: their happy hour isn't very impressive - it's a couple dollars off their beer, but their beer menu is pretty limited and didn't have anything particularly exotic, and a couple dollars off one single cocktail, which, at least when I was there, was one of the intentionally-low-ABV ones, and was still $10 at happy hour price. I still had to try it, just cause it was there, and it was certainly tasty, but if I were spending $10 on a cocktail, I'd definitely rather it be more like the one I mentioned above, and if I were looking for something refreshing that didn't have much alcohol, there are plenty of places that just don't serve alcohol, and make great nonalcoholic drinks for a lot less than $10. On the other hand, I suppose the nice thing about a bar that doesn't have a very good happy hour, but has great all day prices, is that you don't have to rush to get there while it's happy hour. ;) read more
