Ordered several dozen for my son's birthday party. The kids cupcakes were a great mix of chocolate and mint and had little Spider-Man's on top, but it was the two dozen cupcakes for the grownups that really made the party. While the kids were happy to get any bit of chocolate in them, the grownups were coming up with little competitions to see who would get the bacon topped cupcake and sharing bites of their butterscotch and peanut butter cupcakes. Yesterday late afternoon April 28, 2016 I decided to go to The Cupcake Store and fortunately was able to buy the "ManCake" cupcakes that is made of chocolate with a piece of dark chocolate with a piece of bacon in the middle on top of buttercream frosting. The cake itself was perfect, not too sweet and delicious but the frosting was too sweet. It looked beautiful and tasted very good. Even my son and husband who love sweets, thought the frosting had too much sugar. The chocolate peanut butter cupcake of which I bought the last one was also very good but the buttercream frosting was also too sweet. The carrot mini cupcakes which my son and husband ate was very good and I thought that was my favorite as well as my son who loved the carrot mini-cupcake. They had run out of the regular carrot cupcakes! I \purchased the last of all the cupcakes: the 4 chocolate cupcakes, and the two mini carrot cupcakes and a sugar free mini vanilla cupcake. My husband didn't like the coconut sprinkled on the frosting of the carrot cupcake mini but I love coconut as well as my son who is college age and health conscious. I am not a fan of vanilla cupcake but it was still moist but I do not like Splenda but I haven't heard of anyone using a more natural sweetener such as stevia to flavor the frosting. It was okay, as I prefer chocolate and they were out of chocolate sugar free cupcakes! Will have to try that flavor next time. If the frosting was medium sugar and not so sweet, I would have given the bakery a five star instead of a 4 to a 4.5. I will be back! read more

I was excited to hear that there was a new cupcake shop in Santee; my girls and I love to watch cupcake wars, and so we were excited to check this place out. Visually, the store front and the cupcakes were not great. It is a tiny place, so it would be rather inexpensive to decorate. The display case was boring and not well stocked. I had a lemon cupcake which was good, but small. One of my daughters chose the peanut butter with marshmellow frosting and the other got a sugar free chocolate. The cupcakes were just fine. My low(ish) rating is due to the fact that I was ultimately disappointed by the ambiance of the place; I was hoping it would look a little more exciting inside. Perhaps, they could cut some cost by not using such expensive packaging, which was just thrown out minutes after devouring the cakes. I LOVE cupcakes, so when I heard that there was a new cupcake bakery out in the East County I was so excited to try it!!! The place itself is cute, small nothing special. They had some interesting flavors, but nothing that is worth raving about especially for the price. When I brought the cupcakes home they looked weird to me, I couldn't understand why they looked different until I cut open the strawberry cupcake. It looked and tasted exactly like the box strawberry cupcake mix you buy at the grocery store!!! Most cupcakes made from scratch, the top of the cupcake rises slightly above the wrapper. These cupcakes looked like I had just made them myself and piped some frosting on top. So disappointed and turned off. I would rather pay that price and more to drive to La Jolla for the real deal!!! read more

My mom and I just moved back to santee and we had seen the cupcake store before and so we decided to treat ourselves to a cupcake. And let me just say the bananas fosters just about made me cry it was so incredible. The texture of the.cake was perfect and the frosting was just right. not to overpowering and not to underwhelming. The price is just right when you go for a treat occasionally not every day. The ambiance was very nice and thought the service was really awesome. I will definitely be going again. I loved the cupcakes at this store. I visited their Coronado location and went right at closing. The owner was very friendly and didn't try to push my out the door even though they were about to close. The cupcake is very moist and the frosting isn't too sweet. There is also a perfect frosting to cake ratio (this is VERY important)! I love that they sell mini and regular cupcakes. I bought mini in every flavor available. My sister loved the fireball (it has alcohol in the frosting). My favorite was the chocolate peanut butter. Anytime I am in the Santee or Coronado area, I will be stopping in to buy more of these yummy treats! read more

I have been in search for a good cupcake and I think I finally found a great one! Finally a cupcake that has it all, moist cake, creamy frosting and a great price! I have been averaging 3.50 a cupcake at other places that were not worth it! I tried the lime cupcake which was super moist and light it will be a hit for Summer Parties! Today is my husbands birthday and his bday request was German chocolate cake. Of course I wait till the last minute I happen to stumble across this business at 4:45pm on a Monday. I call and ask if they have German Chocolate cupcakes and low and behold a lovely lady named Anne answered the phone and she says we do have German chocolate cupcakes. I came right down to the store and was greeted by a friendly warm lovely lady. I was able to gather up 4 beautiful large cupcakes and 3 mini cupcakes for the kids. We tried the German fusion cupcake (ah-mazingly good) we tried red velvet, vanilla sprinkle, butter finger and strawberry gluten free free cupcakes. Each single cupcake was so delicious. My favorite was the vanilla sprinkle. I wish I could've waited long enough to take a picture but we didn't. It was absolute perfection how each sprinkle covered the frosting. I've lived in Santee for over 5 years and now I know where to get all our birthday cupcakes. Thank you Anne! We will surely be back soon. I can't to try the acai bowls. Today I threw a baby shower and ordered cupcakes and French macaroons. First time ever using this place. I couldn't be more pleased! Love the Cupcake Store! Love that they have mini cupcakes. My mom's favorite is carrot cake. Husband and I cannot choose just one favorite because they are all scrumptious. I went to this establishment on Tuesday, the owner was so nice and very knowledgeable about how the cupcakes are made and what steps are taken to ensure their superior quality. Let me tell you, they are SUPERIOR! I have tasted a few of the competition's products and her desserts are the only ones that have a fresh clean taste, the flavors are very pronounced, cake and frosting ratio is extremely balanced and most of all they don't leave an after taste in your mouth. I had a dessert emergency recently for a Bridal Shower and, with only 4 hours until the party was to start, I called The Cupcake Store after recalling a recent recommendation from another friend. Garrett answered the phone and had an immediate solution to my dessert needs. He actually made us 2 doz mini cupcakes in flavors and colors that fit in with the shower decor. The little delights were ready with an hour to spare and got great raves from the party guests. The Cupcake Store is amazing. We ordered a cake and cupcakes from the Cupcake Store in Santee for our daughter's Sweet 16 party. The owner, Ann, is so sweet and she was so excited to make my daughter's cake as beautiful as my daughter had imagined it in her mind. The theme of the party was The Fault in Our Stars. The two layer cake used every picture and saying from the book that my daughter asked for on the cake. It was absolutely stunning. We made a very beautiful cake table with multiple decorations, but the cake was the crown jewel of it all. We were so proud to have that cake at her party. The cake and cupcakes were moist and delicious. We had multiple flavors. I am going to take them some pictures we took at the party so they can add them to their photo albums at the store. As far as I am concerned the price was reflective of the amount of work that went into it. You pay for the work of art that you are getting from the Cupcake Store. read more

Having read the front page article in the Sunday UT I was excited to try a cupcake from the Cupcake Store while in Santee. I was very surprised when entering the shop that there was no seating in order to enjoy your cupcake. I ordered the Red Velvet Raspberry cupcake as well as 2 Pup Cakes for my dogs. I had to eat my cupcake in my hot cake as there was no place to sit down. I was very disapointed in the cupcake. Very dry, no flavor, had to come out of a box. No cream cheese frosting. $2.75 for 3-4 bites. Took the two Pupcakes home to my dogs. One dog seemed to love it, the other did not. Left a pile of crumbs on the floor. And she never refuses treats. And the 1 bite pupcakes were 75 cents a piece. At least the trip wasn't a waste, found a great used bookstore next door and bought 4 hardbound books for $1.50 each. The bookstore will get return visis, the Cupcake Store will not. read more

I have been to The Cupcake Store on three separate occasions now and fall back in love with it each time. The first time I went we got a dozen mini cupcakes so we could just sample a bunch of flavors and try to find one we liked--I of course fell in love with the chocolate peanut butter & the mint. The second time I went back to get 6 regular sized cupcakes for a friends birthday and of course, we both LOVED the chocolate peanut butter (for some reason all the extra goodies they put on top of the large cupcakes make them that much more appetizing--for this reason I'm thinking they should probably dress up the minis a wee bit more). The third was again for a friends birthday and I got 6 mini cupcakes. Each time they have been a hit among me and those I have brought them to. A lot of the negative reviews seem to be about the cost of the cupcakes--if you want gourmet cupcakes then yeah, you're going to have to pay the price. They aren't cheap, but if they were then it wouldn't be special. If you don't then just grab a box of mix and make your own. I only wish they opened later in the day so they can stay open later in the evening and allow us to make a trip down after dinner or something. This is not a fancy gourmet boutique shop with a perfectly coiffed cake sitting on a doily served by a a waiter wearing white gloves.. but apparently that's what some reviewers expect! I've been to this store three times. The first to purchase last-minute treats for a baby shower I was throwing after a disastrous attempt at baking a cake myself; the second as a quick stop for an afternoon treat after my son and I visited the library next door; and the third when I ordered two dozen for my son's birthday party. Each time I thought the cupcakes were marvelous! This is a no-frills bakery.. you get delicious, quality cupcakes and you can sit your happy self at the small table or you can take them on your merry way. Regardless, they taste delicious. You can either purchase one of the available cupcakes or you can special order pretty much anything you want. Case in point, I took the lemon and raspberry red velvet cupcakes for the baby shower since I was literally on my way to it and had to take whatever they had available. For my son's birthday party, I special ordered the flavors he wanted. I'm not sure what the big beef is with people who gave it one or two stars.. really, do they work for a competing bakery? The Cupcake Store may not be anything "special" in terms of fancy decor, but the cupcakes are pretty outstanding! read more

If you want a moist, fresh, melt in your mouth cupcake... come check this place out! There have been so many times when a cutely decorated cupcake has tempted me into buying it, only to find that they are dry and icky like they have been sitting in the case for a week, then they hit your stomach like a lead brick and you feel sickly.... well, that is not the case with these cupcakes! MOIST, FLAVORFUL and FLUFFY FRESH! I ate entirely too many of them and I still felt good and wanting more! What can I say, I love a good cupcake! It is hard to pick a favorite, but I think the Chocolate Peanut Butter with Marshmallow frosting has been stuck in my head and I have been craving it since I was there last. The red velvet was crazy good too. I was also very impressed with the Gluten Free Chocolate. It was so rich I couldn't believe it was gluten free.
