    The Chamber

I am that crazy friend thats willing to try a lot of different things and drag you along. This CryoBar experience rocks! Of course its cold, it's supposed to be. To top it off, you're naked! Well they do provide you with a pair of tube socks and mittens. The experience is only three minutes, five is the maximum. I was there with a Chicago Marathon runner, I laughed a little inside watching her jump around. When she didn't finish her three minutes, I got nervous. I entered the chamber like a champ! Although, I wear a good poker face that is the COLDEST I have ever felt in my life. I stood there like a statue until my time was up. They have really nice plush robes for you and your body starts to warm up immediately. I have had four different sessions. I even tried the cryo facial and it was amazing. The great benefits of cryo is that it relieves inflammation, swelling and pain. Who doesn't want that.

However, new ownership seems intent on slowly ruining this treasured institution. When I heard that the owner of Red Square had taken the Sweatlodge over, I braced myself. I no longer patronize that place due to experiencing a rapid decline in the quality of service and facilities. It turns out my apprehension was valid. In short order, Sweatlodge started going downhill ... - The satellite radio was the first to go. No more chill blues or jazz, but a local radio station that plays obnoxious commercials half of the time. - The wood in the saunas was replaced with much cheaper material. No more pleasant smell of cedar when you walk in. Also, there are exposed screw heads throughout the benches of the dry sauna, which have burnt me numerous times. - The zero gravity chairs that were perfect for a nap have been replaced with uncomfortable wooden chairs. Word is that the owner grew tired of fixing them. But somehow this wasn't an issue for the nearly 20 years they had previously been there. - The ice machine was taken out, and the water tank replaced with a fountain that is often lukewarm. - The sand filtering in the cold plunge was replaced with chlorine. The pool is often much warmer than it should be, especially in warm months. - The food portions are much smaller while meals grow more expensive. For example, I got the chicken soup most of my visits for a decade and a half. It was the best in the city. Now, it is a medium bowl of thin broth. featuring an anemic chicken leg and thigh with a few slices of carrot and potato thrown in - for $17. It was previously served with a small, fresh baked loaf of bread. Not anymore. - The cafe hours have been limited to save on payroll. It doesn't open until well into the afternoon. - Last time I was there, a sign proclaimed that you could request only one extra towel. (This was a classic Red Square tactic. Nickel and dime bullshit.) - 10% service charge added to all services. - One of the TVs had disappeared from the wall last time I visited. All of this while the admission price steadily climbs. I have still visited, but much less often than I used to. An unpleasant surprise has awaited me every time. I will probably pop in once in a while, as the heat is still good, and the plunge still satisfies (when it is cold). The staff is friendly and competent. This is the only reason for my second star. However, I am sure it won't be long before the penny pinching results in an underwhelming experience I refuse to pay for. Many men have been patronizing this joint for even longer than I have, but I would would imagine that they have their limits and will begin to drop off as well if this continues. Really disappointing and a true shame that new owner is ruining this magical place.

There are a variety of services to choose from, but the various baths of different temperatures and salt engage the senses like no other. It's co-ed, and you can move between baths at your leisure. There's even a semi-outdoor waterfall bath. The variety is wonderful. There's a salt shower area that you could rub salt on yourself which feels wonderful. I really enjoyed the sauna which had an aromatherapy component to it and a cold plunge inside. I didn't think I could do it, but the hot temps made it easier to get into the cold water. Service here is splendid, and reservations need to be made so that over-crowding doesn't happen. This makes the experience of coming here much more enjoyable. You can really unwind, relax, and come out of this feeling refreshed.

There is staff around so if you have any questions, that can be answered. The locker rooms are clean. There are a couple private changing rooms and, of course, cuz it is separate from the men, you can choose to change in the open. You change into your bathing suit and they provide a robe. Within this locker room, there are showers available and there is also an area provided to get ready AFTER the services are complete. It has hair dryers and spray deodorant and I think lotions. They do provide "wet slippers". They fit like no show socks so there's no need for any kind of flip flop type shoe to protect your feet. I have no review for the men's locker room cuz... Well. I'm not a man. BUT my husband had no complaints. When ready, you meet your partner and go to the "bath" area. They have all kinds of hot tubs and steams rooms and cold plunges and just yeah. It's pretty cool. You hang your robe and in you go. There is also a juice bar and the juices are delicious. Again, there is plenty of staff to assist with any questions you may have. If you booked a massage, and, of course, why not? They will let you know when it's time. You go upstairs and get the best massage of your life. I had a female masseuse and my husband had a male one. Once done, back into the locker room to get ready for the rest of your day/evening. It was a pleasant experience. It was also quite pricey. This was gifted to me and my man. Not sure if we would have extra funds to splurge within our own budget. This is downtown Chicago. Parking is NOT provided. Although they do offer valet.

Reading about it, it became clear that is was a beer-like solution, and closer to a hop-scented herbal bath. Ok that definitely sounded better. There are also other spa amenities, and it's just you and the people you came with in each room/treatment area. So I came here with my wife, and it turned out to be the perfect relaxing, fun (and slightly gimmicky) activity between a morning of site-seeing/walking around Chicago, and an evening dinner/show. We did the silver package. Arrived a few minutes early and changed into robes/slippers (minor nitpick #1: my sandals were comically small for me, it would be nice to have bigger ones to choose from) then headed to the salt room. The room itself is very relaxing, even with periodic subway rumbling. (Minor nitpick #2: we both wished the bottom of the chairs were more padded). After a trip to the Sauna (we did not last long) and the steam room (which had a cold shower inside that was extremely nice to cool down) we headed downstairs for the soak (with fresh drinks and a snack platter). The soak was very relaxing and gave your skin a light hoppy/floral scent. Everything seemed clean and well-organized. Definitely would recommend for a unique couples' spa package.

I started off with the halotherapy, followed by sitting in the sauna to sweat out all the toxics, after the steam room. The steam room is where my mind and body connected with pure joy. After it was time for my beer spa, when I walked inside the room. I was in an awe moment of a surprise. The room was beautifully lit with candles, there was a chalk board with a happy birthday message. Along with a small charcuterie board and more wine and water. It was such a luxurious and beautiful experience. This was one of my favorite places to come celebrating my birthday. I will absolutely come back to enjoy another Self Care Day. Great place to unwind, release stress and detox your mind body and soul.
