They (like many people) believed that a giant chain hardware store (OK... it was Home Depot), was going to give them the best price, service and guarantees. Having just been through canceling a major kitchen remodel with them because of the difficulties they presented with customer service mainly, and price secondarily (their installation costs were astronomical), I resolved to NEVER contract with them ever again for a project like this. However, I had to appease my folks so we went through the inevitable rigamarole of picking out a product, and getting measurements and an estimate. Their estimate came in suspiciously cheap, but it also came with the uncertainty of their sales people who said things like, "we can get the wood you want, but you have to buy it yourself from our website" and "we don't know if we can get the trim pieces" and "we do NOT glue down floors ever." The people there seem well intentioned, but they really aren't in a position to deliver careful, knowledgeable service for a specialty project like this which is why they contract everything out EXCEPT selling the project and supplies to you. They are hardware store personnel with some specialty training, but really it's not good enough. We took our estimate to ProFloors and Cedric Eckenrode went over everything and pointed out obvious problems with it. When I took his suggestions back to Home Depot, after a Keystone Cops like hour with one of their "floor people," the estimate had already gone up $1,500 dollars higher than originally stated. I'm sure it would have been more had we actually went with them. ProFloors was a bit higher but definitely competitive. Working with Cedric and his team was what added the most value to the overall cost. Cedric's wealth of knowledge on flooring comes from a lifetime of experience which he generously shares. He clearly explains the pros and cons of everything and his rationale for his choices and recommendations. He is extremely unwilling to compromise on quality and good practices just to get your business or for any other reason. He genuinely cares about your happiness and will make hard choices on your behalf. He and his team stayed in good communication throughout the process, and we are extremely happy with the outcome. We also went through dog and pony shows with Haddingers, Empire, and A Flooring Group. Haddingers was railroading us for top dollar. Empire cut their estimate by $5,000 overnight but couldn't get the wood we wanted (very suspicious), and the A Flooring Group was too new, a bit pushy, and made unreasonable promises. I hope there is a special place in hell for Home Depot for the BS they put people through. So, it's a jungle out there. It was great to run into the Tarzan of Flooring who could tame the savage beast in my elderly mother and muster the forces required to get the job done right.
