I found the Creative Sewing Studio earlier this year by Google search and I was shocked by how many 5 star reviews they had. I am no longer surprised after taking 2 rounds of classes here. I have so far only had Mikala as an instructor but dang is she amazing! She is so kind and patient and through in her teaching. She also is super personable and really takes an interest in her students personally. The classes themselves are structured so well and you learn so much. There are so many different kinds of classes too which is a huge draw for me. I'm already signed up for two more month long series of classes and one full day workshop. I've taken sewing 100 and now in the sewing 101 class. The classes Mikala runs have been life changing for me to the point that I want to sign up for more! She's patient and has great knowledge about the sewing world and gives tips on how to interpret patterns and such! I like the fact that she'll give us tips that might not be in the patterns you buy at the store(that the designers somehow expect you to know). I've always been the type of person to pick a hobby, buy stuff, and then shove it in a closet (see me if you need candle making supplies), and we all expected sewing to be the same. People are SHOCKED that I'm still sewing. Like, ALL in and engaged. I spent most of break sewing. I made a wall hanging quilt in one day, I cut and sewed all of the squares for a queen size exploding heart quilt for my dad, and made two different sized pillows. My husband works from home and said it was the first time he's ever come to check on me and I'm doing the same thing as I was during his previous check in. Which is all thanks to Mikala and her teaching style. I've taken a lot of crafting classes and while all of the instructors were great at their art, I've never felt that their teaching skills were very effective. I could do the skill in front of them while they were watching me and guiding me but the second I was by myself I never felt confident in my skills. The way Mikala plans classes and chunks the lessons into things that are manageable and scaffolded and they way you support each student has been awesome. I've always felt super supported and know that even if I make mistakes, she will talk me through a way to fix it myself. It has been awesome!!! read more

Let me start by saying, I've wanted to learn to sew since I was a little girl. I was REALLY excited when my sweet mother, a gifted quilter, dollmaker, painter, and artist, first gifted me my sewing machine. We had grand plans for her to teach me everything she knew. Unfortunately, each time she tried to teach me to use my machine, both of us wound up frustrated, angry and increasingly reluctant to attempt another lesson. My wonderful gift just sat there gathering dust-for years. Finally after relocating to MA and still crazy homesick after 6 months, I needed to find something to get my mind off of it. I tentatively decided to give sewing another try. Best. Decision. Ever. Mikala at the Creative Sewing Studio, who I've taken most of my classes with, is an excellent teacher-patient, funny, and just really has a knack for understanding what kind of issues beginners run into and how to get around them. She has a relatable, hip vibe about her that makes sewing seem positively cool (who knew?!) Because of this, her courses attract everyone from high school kids to seniors- most of them repeat customers and each class I've taken has been with a fun group of people. They offer such a huge variety of sewing classes -everything from quilting, making clothing, serger courses, craft sewing, and even a variety of art courses-truly something for anyone with a penchant for the creative. I'm on my fourth series of courses now (Intro to Sewing, Sewing 101, Sewing Patterns, and now Be Your Own Tailor, which all include 5 classes each) and can't believe how much I'm enjoying a hobby that used to bring me to tears. I have now taken a few classes (Beginner, Sew 101, and Christmas Tree Skirt) and loved them all. Mikala is a patient and knowledgeable instructor who can assist even the most novice sewer (like myself). Depending on the class, you will work on the project under her guidance and complete some steps at home. The classes are small (max of 6 students) so each student receives a lot of attention and help. My husband and I took the beginner sewing class with Mikala. It was WONDERFUL. Neither of us had sewn much/any before and we were very interested in learning from square one. What a great place to learn. We made 2 items a pillow and a napkin holder. Both came out great. We got to choose our fabric from an eclectic collection and create our projects individually. The joy of seeing us all succeed and the relaxed vibe of the class added to the enjoyment. We all got to easily ask questions, make mistakes, fix mistakes, and just learn and see what we all created. The group started off quiet but was fully charged and in a lovely groove by the end of our first class! A true testament to the creative, engaging atmosphere curated by Mikala. I finished Mikala's intermediate (103) class last week. There were four (maybe five?) projects that students could choose from, so the class offered some flexibility, while also providing enough structure that I didn't feel overwhelmed. I leaned some new skills (properly using a pattern, bias tape, and fusible interfacing) and worked on some skills that needed help (sewing a straight line!). The small class size allowed her to spend time answering each student's questions and offering suggestions for the best way to approach a task. Additionally, when a student worked on a technique that wasn't included in everyone's project (e.g. turning a strap, making a ruffle), she made sure everyone came together to see how it was done. That way, everyone was exposed to techniques beyond those necessary for their own projects. Absolutely recommend taking classes here! I start her clothing construction class today, so will report back on that soon! read more

This studio is a rare find. I signed my 8 year old daughter up for beginners sewing classes and she absolutely adores it! The studio is very cute and welcoming, the staff extremely helpful and knowledgeable and the classes are kept to small sizes so everyone gets a lot of one-on-one help. My daughter finished the beginners class and just started Kid's Sewing 101 which she also loves - and we can't wait for summer camp! I can't speak highly enough of Mikala and her beginner sewing classes! I have some extremely creative and crafty people in my family, and I've always envied their ability to sew, but I never took the initiative to take lessons for myself. Then, I saw a Groupon for beginner's sewing lessons one town over from where I live, and I decided it was the perfect chance for me to give it a shot without spending a ton of money on something I wasn't sure I'd be any good at. I came into this class literally having never touched a sewing machine in my life. I was a little bit nervous after I saw that some people had brought their own sewing machines and had some prior experience. I explained to Mikala that I had never tried sewing before, and she cheerfully responded that it wouldn't be a problem. She was right! After just my first two classes, I had made a throw pillow that looked like something bought from a store! I was so excited and encouraged, that I even went out and purchased a sewing machine of my own. I brought it to the next class, and Mikala showed me how to thread it and install the bobbin, and I was up and sewing with it mere minutes later. Mikala is great at explaining not just how to do things, but why you should do things a certain way. She keeps the class size small so that she can give each student the attention they need, and she is very encouraging all along the way! I met some very nice people in my class, and we had so much fun doing our projects! After only 3 lessons, I went home and made a dog bed for my pup all by myself. By the end of my 5 beginner level classes, I had made an adorable and durable tote bag! I decided to take my first class here this past summer and I'm completely hooked :) I wanted to learn a new hobby so I went into my first class a complete newbie and left with a solid sewing foundation. Mikala has been wonderful; she is so kind, funny, and helpful. I never felt like I was falling behind or not understanding a concept because she is always able to answer questions and demonstrate if needed. The class sizes are small which makes for a very personal experience. I have since taken 2 other sewing classes and a knitting class. The knitting class was taught by Heather and she is a sweetheart as well. Heather made sure that everyone in the class understood the steps before moving onto the next step. She spent time with each student to ensure they were all on the same page. And I can't stress how NICE she is! I've wanted to learn to sew for years, but have been intimidated by trying to use the internet or instructional videos. There is a lot of information out there and it's hard to know where to begin. Plus I was worried about buying a machine and all the materials and *then* finding out that I didn't like it. I was so excited to find the Creative Sewing studio and the fact that they had classes that were specifically for beginners and that I was able to rent a machine for the class! I've taken the Sewing 100 and Sewing Patterns 101 classes. Mikala is such a great teacher, she goes through the basics in a really clear way. I'm definitely a hands-on learner, but she also teaches everything in a way that's good for people who learn by listening/reading instruction, or by watching others. Sewing has always alluded me. I am an extremely technical person, but also a very creative person who loves using machines and technology in art and hobby, but my sewing machine spent most of its life covered in dust under all my other projects while I struggled to sew a straight line, or get my bobbin threaded correctly.
