    Pieces waiting to be fired

The Steel Yard is such an arts treasure in Providence. From the classes they offer in media like welding and ceramics to the unique space itself - created out of an old steel factory - it is a wonderful community resource and a really inspiring place to be. I am currently taking a 10-week long ceramics class with a friend of mine and loving it. My friend had already taken a slab/hand-building-based class at the Steel Yard over the summer and thought it was fantastic, so she ended up signing up for this wheel-based course, and I'm so glad I decided to join her for it. The facility itself is gorgeous - very industrial, with lots of character. It is well-supplied and nicely maintained. Our friendly instructor has been very effective and helpful, striking a nice balance between providing direct help/doing demonstrations and having us work independently. Each class is 3 hours long, which is a nice chunk of time to both watch some demonstrations and throw a handful of pieces on the wheel. In the last week we've also learned to glaze our pieces, so as we approach the end of the course, most of the students are devoting more time to that. It has been so fun seeing how all our classmates' pieces turn out. The course cost just over $400, and while that's a big investment, it's a great value because the class includes all materials and services (clay, glazes, tools, and frequent kiln firing done by the staff), as well as access to open studio hours on Thursdays and Sundays for 3 hours each. If you take advantage of the open hours, you can really end up taking a bunch of things home to keep or give as gifts! As we near the end of the class and my pile of pretty bowls and cups builds up at home, I'm already starting to get sad that the facility closes each winter and I will no longer be able to go to my beloved open studio hours. Seriously, throwing on the wheel is basically a form of therapy, since it is both meditative and creative. If you're looking for a new creative outlet that results in beautiful things to keep for yourself or give to family and friends, I highly recommend taking a ceramics class here. No prior experience needed!

I had never tuft before so this was something new and exciting to try out! Every step of the way, Sav (the owner) was absolutely wonderful, so extremely helpful and accommodating. From the detailed emails regarding the correct location of the building (inside Hope Artiste Village) to recommendations of the best images to tuft to helping you sharpen your tufting lines, we couldn't have asked for a better instructor. She gave great instructions and came around to help out where she knew we were struggling a bit but always encouraged and made us feel like we were all rockstars. I can't say enough about how great of a class we had. She had her niece Leah (sp?) help out as well and she was such a sweet kid. The space is large, airy and welcoming. Feel free to bring something to eat/drink but light snacks and water are provided. We left with the cutest rugs that we made ourselves. Great to walk away with a masterpiece we personally put our hearts into. I'd love to come back in the future.

I feel braver, more willing to take risks with my creativity. However, the last art class I took was an obligatory high school graduation requirement in 1995. So why was I doing this? Why did I dive in for an acrylic pour class that deals with resin and pouring paints? I can't even dye Easter eggs properly. I arrived and Jennifer was there to welcome me. She was warm and friendly. I met the instructor, Jim Bradley (whom I purchased art from previously). It was a two part series class; two Saturdays from 12-2 pm. All materials were provided, even aprons if we needed them. Between Jennifer's and Jim's encouragement, I created pieces of art that I was proud to show others. Through their energy and love for art, they led me to a place that helped me transform my art intimidation into creativity. There were nine others in the class (it sold out very quickly). We all had so much fun. I have since signed up for a Gong Bath, a Paint Nite with Angel Card Reading and my 6 year old attending a Paint with Paper class. Jennifer's background of art and teaching is a gift and it shows through her ownership at HeARTspot. Her class prices are very reasonable and as you can see...they keep you coming back for more. A true advocate in supporting the arts for all!
