West Side Studio is my go to place for feel good experiences! I'm not only honing my sewing skills, but I am enjoying like minded people in a sweet studio, with owner and operator, Patti. I have been going nearly every Saturday morning for about 2.5 years, was not a newcomer to sewing, but have learned so much more. I love being able to take on any project, because I know I will have great coaching on any issues that are perplexing for me. I have seen sewists from complete novices to highly skilled people at the studio, and everyone is attended to, because Patti will only allow 6 participants per session. Oh, and if you can't make it on a day you've signed up for, don't worry...Patti lets you do make up sessions, whenever you can fit into her scheduled hours. I absolutely love my classes at west side sewing! I found them and thought I would just check them out and was so extremely happy I did! Patti is a excellent teacher and sets up her classes so you choose the project that interests you and she just helps you excel at it! I had learned a little bit about sewing growing up and a little from a friend of mine after getting an awesome sewing machine for a wedding gift but kept feeling stuck. I wanted to make some things for my infant son and also get out of the house. I made a couple amazing pairs of reversible pants for my son which were a huge success it would not have been possible without Patti's patience, great energy and very vast knowledge of sewing! I love attending classes at West Side Sewing Studio! This studio is so cozy and Patti is an awesome instructor! I had absolutely no sewing experience so I was pretty intimidated by the idea of sewing my own doll clothes for my business. Patti was patient with me and very helpful with my sewing projects. I brought my own sewing machine so I could learn how to properly use it and she educated me on many features of my machine which was super helpful. She also helped me with understanding the clothing patterns I brought with me. With some practice, I'm now successfully sewing full outfits that are a nice addition to my branded dolls. I wish I could give more than 5 stars! As an art teacher myself, I can confirm myself that Patti is a wonderful teacher! All of her classes are small (5 people max, but mine is usually only 2) which helps her provide personalized learning to all. I showed up a complete beginner in a class with more experienced folk and felt comfortable right away. Even other students will help or give you their opinion! Bring whatever fabric and any pattern and Patti will help you tackle it. She also has a great makeup policy which I love. If I'm running late with my grading, I can shoot her an email and reschedule for a different class then next week. She also now accepts Venmo which is super convenient. I asked Patti to make me a shirt, but instead she convinced me I could make it myself! Patti is an excellent teacher: clear, supportive, suggestive without being demanding--and in fact I discovered through her the pleasure and satisfaction of sewing. Her studio is a cheerful and practical place to work, full of light and friendly energy, and for those of us who live in small spaces, the large studio tables make laying out patterns and cutting out fabric easy. Patti is an expert sewer and patient teacher with years of experience in both fields. I'm an over-ambitious beginner who has been expertly coached through three garment projects. Two of those projects, frankly, were too complicated for a new sewer, but thanks to Patti, I completed both, wear one happily and consider the other a life lesson in not biting off more than you can chew. My first project, a tunic modified to my tastes with Patti's help, is a staple in my wardrobe. I can't say the same about the first sweater I knitted. Patti is my kind of teacher: creative, flexible and knows her stuff inside and out. Before I started with Patti a few years ago, I'd been sewing on my own in haphazard fashion. I learned more from Patti making my first project (a beloved tunic I wear often) than I had on my own in a dozen years. Nothing phases Patti: not way-too-petite for me Japanese patterns or the one in Swedish with cryptic pictures. For a while, I've been wishing I could make my own clothes, mend, and do alterations. Finally, I started coming to the West Side Sewing Studio. I hadn't sewn since I was a kid, and I didn't do much then, but Patti is a great teacher and guide. It's all about what you want to make or learn how to do. People work on individual projects and Patti helps each person individually. If someone is learning or doing something useful to the group, Patti will call everyone around so they can see. I have loved learning to sew with Patti! (1) she has machines in her studio that you can use if you don't have one. If you want to learn how to work your own machine, you can bring it. Either way is fine. Great way to try out sewing if you aren't sure about buying a machine. (2) it's not exactly a "class". More like a studio - Bring your project, ask whatever questions you have, Patti will show you how to do stuff that you don't know how to do, and otherwise let you work on it at your own pace. I found the West Side Sewing Studio after watching a documentary, "The True Cost", about the cost the fashion industry has on society. I decided I was going to learn to sew and I have been sewing every week since April. I have made dresses, shirts, recreated worn out pants, and I have altered my own clothes too. Each month I have something new to wear and it's a one of a kind! I had no previous experience so Patti had a lot of work to do. She explains everything clearly and she is always willing to help. My 13 year old daughter has been sewing since she was 7 and wanted a regular class to help her with new projects. Patti at the West Side Studio has been perfect! She guides and helps while allowing my daughter to make her own decisions and (sometimes) mistakes. When she's sewing at home, her refrain is "Patti says...", which has given her confidence in an unsupervised setting as well. I took up sewing classes as a New Years Resolution this year but lessons at WSSS have quickly become my new hobby. The 2.5 hour class goes by so quickly and everyone tries to stay longer because of the inviting atmosphere. Patti knows a lot about sewing and she also has tons of amazing stories to share. Patti was patient & helpful in teaching & helping a novice sewer to complete a home dec project...she even restrained a chuckle when I declared "this'll probably only take me one class to finish" ...it took me 6 classes...but they were a fun filled 6 classes! Patti is a fabulous teacher. I am completely new to sewing and I never felt uncomfortable or stupid despite having other very proficient sewers in my class.
