I wanted to continue supporting it for that reason and for its sense of community, but my experiences have been consistently disappointing. Yesterday was my final straw. I am new to sewing and come in seeking guidance on fabric selection and product education, yet nearly every visit is met with dismissive or rude customer service. The older representatives in particular often do not greet me and respond reluctantly or faintly when I ask for assistance. Help is provided, but it often feels like an inconvenience unless they are in the mood. Yesterday, when I asked a representative at the fabric counter for help understanding a product, she was short-tempered and instead told me they were closing at 5:15 p.m., despite the website listing a 7:30 p.m. closing time. The interaction felt rushed, dismissive, and disrespectful. At checkout, I asked for a bag for several small tools and fabric. The cashier said they were running low, and etc and tossed the bag at me. This type of behavior has happened on multiple visits and consistently dampens the experience. I truly wanted to like this store, but the repeated lack of basic courtesy--especially toward newer customers--has made me unwilling to return. I hope management takes these ongoing customer service issues seriously.

They've been in business for over 80 years, and their deep sewing knowledge really sets them apart from other stores. Most employees have been here for years--some for decades--which truly shows their dedication and love for what they do. Even the store owners are very dedicated; you'll often see them on the floor greeting customers, which shows how much they care. Courtney is super helpful and really knows pattern making, Linda has been part of G Street for decades, and Leo is incredibly knowledgeable and always willing to help. You'll soon know everyone by name because they naturally become your sewing-expertise coaches. I even call them the fabric whisperers because they always seem to know exactly what you need. I bought my sewing machine here with Esther's help--she is so kind and genuinely wants you to succeed long after your purchase. They also offer upholstery services and sewing-machine repairs--both of which have saved me more than once. And I have to give a special shout-out to Lew, the sewing tech. He's the absolute best and always knows exactly how to fix any issue. I can't recommend G Street enough. It's a must-visit for anyone who sews, creates, or simply loves beautiful materials.

It was barely used and was in excellent condition, but for some odd reason the cushion was sinking. I figured, if I got it reupholstered to the color of my choice and had the cushion replaced, it would be good as new. I took to my handy dandy Yelp app and did a search and Mill End popped up. I'm familiar with the shop, since a family member worked there years ago, but I had no clue they did this type of work. I gave them a call and was told to bring in a picture to evaluate the chair because they didn't want me to be without my chair for a long time. Well, I thought bringing in the chair itself would be easier, since I wasn't in a hurry for it. I was greeted by a very knowledgeable staff member who gushed about how beautiful the chair was. She did an evaluation of what would be needed to repair and reupholster it and then showed me the fabrics that were available in the color I selected. They have a large variety of fabrics on-sight in the store, but they do have options that can be ordered. The one I selected was on-sight. We agreed upon the estimated price, I filled out some paperwork and I was out the door. It was literally that quick and simple. Since they have a pretty extensive client list waiting for their projects before me, my estimated date for the chair to be completed was about 2 months or so. To my surprise, I was called about a month later informing me that my chair was ready. I arrived and was extremely pleased with my brand new chair. The workmanship was beautifully done and the cushion they replaced was perfectly placed. They did such a phenomenal job, my parents wanted their chair back. Lol! Not on my watch! Yes, Mill End is a bit pricey, but so worth it! They're truly professionals. I'm planning to get my dinning room chairs reupholstered in the near future, so I made sure to get an estimate while I was there. I'll absolutely be back in the near future.

I asked the man on the phone if they sold wallpaper, and he said he thought they might have a few books somewhere, so I asked if they were current, and he checked with his coworkers, who said they were. So I went in. I found a gorgeous print for my tiny powder room, and I purchased it. They were running a 25% discount that week - but not on wallpaper. I was given a 15% discount. I spent $560 to purchase my paper. I was assured it would arrive in a week, and I went home excited, and immediately started looking for someone to hang it. It turns out the person who usually hangs my paper is retiring and moving away from the area. But I found someone, she fit in my budget, she agreed with my measurements, perfect. I scheduled her ASAP, which was 3 weeks from the date, plenty of time for the wallpaper to arrive, and for me to prep. Prep included new paint for the vanity, new cabinet handles, new switchplate, new lighting new towel bar and toilet paper holder, new artwork for the walls - all based on my beautiful wallpaper pick. Everything is ready: my vanity has been painted, all the fixtures purchased and ready to install after the wallpaper. After 10 days, I was worried. The store hadn't called me to say my paper was in. I called them, and they said it had shipped to me, but they weren't able to track it in real time. They didn't take me seriously and they didn't follow up with me. 15 days past purchase, I called them, they were closed, I left a message. They didn't call back. 16 days past purchase, I called them and was again told they can't track it. I asked them to try because it was over two weeks, and they'd told me it arrives in one week. I was put on hold, then she came back to tell me that they'd have to call corporate and she'd call me back in an hour. She didn't call me back in an hour. Four hours later, I called again, and she said she was still waiting to hear back from them. I asked if I could have an answer by the end of the day, and she said she'd try to make that happen. It did not happen. Today, I called again, as I hadn't heard back. They said they'd have to call corporate again. (I didn't even know that this wasn't a local company. I probably would have avoided them because I prefer to shop local. But it's done, too late.) So I was told again that they'd call me back. They didn't. I called them, and was told they'd put me through to someone else (manager? Unsure.) She said she'd call corporate again. She finally called me back and told me they'd figured it out. Unfortunately, the wallpaper was damaged in shipping! And they also don't make it anymore! So they can't order more! What? I got the last 4 double rolls in existence? And they got damaged? Are you kidding? Issues: *I wasn't taken seriously with my first call. *When it was damaged in shipping, no one was notified - not me or the shop. *No one in the shop seems to know how to track a shipment from the factory. *No one was clear on how they could have ordered an item that isn't made and how it could have been damaged in shipping. *I was told that the wallpaper in their books was current, that it wasn't from old books or old collections, except that is untrue. Calico treated me like a person without any value because I only made a small purchase from their shop. But even if $560 isn't a lot for a purchase for them, it was a lot for me, and this was important to me. It doesn't matter how big or small your client is - if they call looking for their order, look for it. Don't treat them like they don't matter. Every client is someone supporting your business, and even if you don't care for people as a whole, you should - at the very least - make your clientele feel valuable so they continue to support your business. I will not be supporting them in any way in the future.

First, Google listed the opening time as 10 a.m., but the store did not open until 11. We had driven from Baltimore to get ahead of bad weather, tried calling multiple times, and found the voicemail full. There's no website to confirm hours, so we were left guessing whether to wait. Once inside, we spent nearly two hours selecting eight fabrics for multiple projects. Many fabrics were not priced, and the single employee cutting fabric had to repeatedly walk to the front of the store to ask the owner for pricing or answers to basic questions, which made the process extremely slow. The final issue was a large-print fabric that had deep slashes running several yards into the roll, along with visible black marks. I asked that the damaged portion be cut off or that cutting begin from the other end of the roll. The owner refused and told me that if I didn't like it, I didn't have to buy it, stating multiple times that they are a "for profit store." I have over 50 years of experience buying fabric and have never been expected to pay for clearly damaged yardage. We ultimately walked out without purchasing anything, leaving eight rolls at the cutting table--well over $1,000 in sales lost. It's disappointing to see how much this store has changed. It was once staffed by knowledgeable, helpful people who wanted to assist customers. I won't be returning.
