I ordered a dozen of extra large males but when I got there Mariah said after they sorted through crabs they only came up with a half a dozen because there was a lot of dead crabs. The results were as expected with tasteless crab season to excess with Old Bay. In fact Old Bay made an appearance on everything from fries to chicken fingers to crab dip. It appeared to be more a seasoning mask for poor quality food --- * Mussels were cold and rubbery * Crab bread was soggy and overloaded with mayo * Chicken wings were twice fried and therefore dry * Crab platter was disgusting. Returned it all And for the record we asked for no refund to be certain there was no false belief of insincerity on our behalf. We showed up with a large party. I was driving through Baltimore coming from Florida and while most places were sold out of any size female crabs....they had them and they were large! The aroma filled my car up so well that I had to buy two more dozen plus shrimp & crab cakes. Everything was scrumptious, service was fast & friendly. Same for their crabs. Always meaty, well seasoned and adequately priced. No price gouging here. ~~~Update~~~ Went back on 4.15.16. They only have 2 sizes of crabs. I got the Large Males for 40 bucks. I figured with a nice sized crab, I'd only need 6. I was dissapointed. Of the 6 crabs, 4 smelled like ammonia. :( It means that the crabs were either old or not good. :( I live far from this location so I didn't even bother going back. If you buy crabs on low stock days, crack open your crabs before you leave this location. This has sullied my opinion of these guys. read more

I dislike writing negative reviews, but this is my experience and it was not good. Born and raised in Maryland (Baltimore area) now living in Florida what I miss the most are Crabs, steamed, soup, crab cakes and crab fluffs. So on 6/30/24 I ordered a Dozen steamed (Super-Males) $139.00 plus 3 lbs of Crab meat (Jumbo Lump) for Crab cakes, Crab fluffs and Crab soup $140.85. Shipping was $76.10. They were to be delivered on July 3rd. In the late afternoon on the 2nd I had not received any communication about shipping etc so I called. I spoke to the owner, Greg who advised me that something out of his control was impacting the shipping part of the order. He told me that the order would arrive but that I would have to pick them up at the airport. I had no problem with that at all and the order arrived at 9:00pm on July 3rd. The order was put inthe refrigerator and the next morning I prepared to make Crab Fluffs, Crab Cakes and Crab Soup. I had 3 lbs of Jumbo Lump Crab Meat in front of me and as always I look forward to eating fresh Crab meat right out of the container. This is where everything started to go down hill. There were no "Sweet" pieces of crab. It had not yet turned bad but it was on it's way, I went on to make the food, after all I had $140 worth of Crabmeat, maybe with the spices etc. we could get by. No one including myself could eat anything made with this Crabmeat. So at lunch time I brought out the Steamed crabs, they were a very good size and pretty heavy, but when I went to eat them I was overpowered with the taste of salt. I did request they be made with "Heavy" spices, the important word being spices. The only spice I tasted was salt. I pushed myself to eat 4 or 5 and dumped the rest in the trash. I called Greg on Friday and explained the experience and he offered to send my a dozen crabs with no spices on them. I was to call him if I wanted to take him up on the offer. After thinking about this over the weekend I called him yesterday 7/9/24 to explain that I was more interested in getting 3 lbs of good fresh Jumbo Lump Crab meat to make my food again then I was in getting a dozen crabs. I explained who I was and was put on hold so that Greg could be found, after about 8 minutes of waiting I hung up. Greg did point out to me that they take great pride in their products and services, returning a phone call would be the first step in proving that. read more

Purchased crabs from here on July 23, 2020 and they were terrible. I purchased 3 dozen small males for $59 dollars. Called prior to picking them up and I arrived 15 minutes after calling and they were ready when I got there. Bag was not even popping hot and when I got home most of the crabs were no good. This place was a complete rip-off. You could tell some of the crabs had been over cooked because they were mushy inside, some had nothing inside and they looked like they had been dead and were dark gray in color. Very disappointing that my money went to waste. The lady that waited on me never thanked me for coming at all, very un-customer service. I made the mistake of going to Crab Depot on Richie Highway today. OMG! The neighborhood was a little shady. the place is a hole in the wall with no seating, no cars, and no customers but I had ordered ahead of time. If you look at their website you'll be convinced it's seafood heaven! I give them a thumbs up for that. The lady at the counter was friendly. I paid $75 for one dozen extra large crabs ($60) and a pound of large steamed shrimp ($15). The shrimp were not fresh, the shell was soft, meat tough and some had the black vein so they were gritty. The lady working the counter on Easter Sunday was rude. There was a sign posted with a special for 2 dozen large males she wouldn't honor for no apparent reason. I paid $85 for 1 dozen extra large male steamed crabs that were predominantly soggy mushy meat that smelled of ammonia. I was not allowed to purchase JO crab season canisters bc of a 10$ credit card minimum policy after having already purchased $90 bux in crabs by card. This is a smaller neighborhood place and it is strictly carry-out. There are no tables, just chairs for sitting while you wait. Foodwise, they carry assortments of fresh shrimp, oysters, crab, crab cakes, etc. They also offer side dishes like hush puppies and potato salad (which by the way is the best potato salad I've ever had). Overall, I liked this place. My one complaint is that they forgot to crack open our oysters so we had to do it ourselves which was a pain! I used to work in a crab house steaming crabs and my father in law is a avid crabber you could definitely tell the crabs were dead before cooking in them because of the smell of them. I called ahead of time to place my order. I had intended on paying with my prepaid card because I couldn't find my EBT, which they accept. But I was able to find it and When it came time to pay the lady said she could not accept my payment because I had already told her debit. Which shouldn't have been a problem but she informed me that if I told her I was paying EBT, she would have only given me a Courtesy steam. Therefore saying she wouldn't have prepared my food the same. I feel that it was discrimination. Whether I'm paying cash, card or EBT, my food should be prepared the same. I would love to leave a 0 star review however that option is not available. My wife and i ordered a dozen crabs for fathers day with overnight shipping. On the day the crabs were supposed to be delivered we get an email saying they would not be able to fulfill their delivery for fathers day. My wife contacted the company and spoke to a lady named Tory who offered to upgrade our crabs to the next largest size or add some "extras" to our order for the inconvenience. Being as things happen outside of people control we accepted their offer and waited for the delivery to be made a few days after fathers day. Welp...we should have cancelled right than and there as when the crabs finally did arrive there was nothing that was promised. While i was irritated the crabs were late i was angered that they had welched on their side yet again. Furthermore my father informed me that while they were a lovely gesture that he would not be eating them as the ice packs were warm when they arrived at his house. By now my wife was angry as well and called the company yet again. After getting the run around for over 30 mins the message was relayed from the owner (Greg Daily) that we were to send the crabs back to them as verification in order to get a refund. This clearly was an absurd request as the box of undersized crabs were sitting in the heat cooking up a nice ripe smell. It was a this point that I began calling the company as i felt i needed some answers. The lady who answered the phone made it pretty clear between her snarky comments and nervous chuckles that they weren't going to stand by their product. I was promised a call back from Tory as she wasn't available. A week went by with no call back so i called again and this time Tory answered the phone. At this point a replacement was out of the question i wanted a refund however Tory decided it was to much trouble to address my concerns considering they had already gotten my $200 and some dollars. In the end i will have to go to my credit card company and dispute this charge as we received terrible service through out the whole ordeal not to mention blamed for what was clearly a screw up on their end considering the packaging and shipping of crabs is their job. The moral of the story is i should have read their recent reviews which are nothing but negative and stayed far away from this cesspool of a "business". As an after thought my wife and i compiled all the voicemails, pictures of uneaten crabs sitting by the trash can, phone calls, etc. should this establishment seek to discredit our claims. its unfortunate that my first yelp review would have to be negative but when a company makes it clear they are a moral hazard i have no choice but to try and caution others so they don't experience the same thing as my family experienced. read more

Buyer beware---if you're looking for 100% real Maryland blue crabs do not purchase from The Crab Depot. I unfortunately realized this after I'd placed an order. The catch is that they offer both Louisiana and Maryland blue crabs and they mix the two together. Louisiana crabs are farmed and are not considered as delicate and as special as a Maryland blue crab, so basically you're getting dirt mixed in with your salad. Their employees don't even know how the Louisiana blue crabs are fished. After asking the surly young bumpkin who was manning the counter whether of not the The Crab Depot can guarantee if their crabs are either Maryland or Louisiana she frowned at me, screamed in the back for another bumpkin to come out, and then they both proceeded to tell me that the box that contained the 12 crabs I'd ordered is probably a mix. But lo-and-behold, after I asked if the owner could verify things the male bumpkin went in back again to "talked to the owner" and came out saying that the crabs the owner had chosen were indeed Maryland. I stupidly took my chances. Well guess what folks! I could literally TASTE the difference in the mix of crabs as my husband and I dug into them the next day. Some were muddy in flavor and tasted like hose water. Some were light and flaky and delicate. This leads me to believe that not all of my crabs were from the same locale. Long story short, if you're in the market for GENUINE Maryland blue crabs and are buying crabs from the Crab Depot sight-unseen or online, do not trust this business. You'll be made to look like a Salty Sally like myself. read more

We have purchased crabs from Crab Depot on Ritchie Highway so many times but they were always live. I called the Crab Depot to place an order for a half bushel of crabs and yes, I wanted them live. The employee proceeded to quote me the prices to which my bill would have been around 130.00 dollars. She explained they had several sizes and was also currently running a special. Never once was I informed they had no more live crabs..... I set off to pick up my crabs and received a phone call from the store before my arrival. The clerk told me that they could steam my crabs for me which I refused. She responded and said that all the live crabs they had were being sold to another store. I asked her if she could steam my crabs that I asked for to be alive, than why can't I just steam my own crabs and what different it would make if I steamed them myself. It dawned on me at this moment that she wanted to sell me already steamed crabs. I do not like crabs that have been steamed by someone else as I have developed my own seasoning recipe that my family and friends love. I should have listened to my inner voice and rejected the crabs. If you are a true crab eater then you will know it is hard to walk away from the opportunity of getting crabs to satisfy that urge. Well, I finally got the clerk to admit that these crabs were steamed earlier that day. Again the urge was to great. After 3 phone calls to the Crab depot and finally deciding to take the chance, I wish I could start that process over again and stick to my original feeling to reject the purchase. The Crab Depot sold me crabs that they cooked and they were the worst crabs I we had ever attempted to eat. Most of them had a smell coming from them that smelled like ammonia. I checked and found that this is an indicator that some or many of the crabs were already dead or very close to death when they cooked them. It is also a sign that decay have started and it is transferred through the water and what crabs that are alive will filter the decay through there gills which will also cause there meat to also have this repugnant smell and texture. The meat was like a minced texture and just really bad to the taste. I was shocked. I am not sure if the store is under new management or what, and I have never dealt with any of the people that were in there that day. I believe they made up the story about selling all the other live crabs and just wanted to sell the left over garbage crabs so as to not take a lost on those horrible crabs. Yes, I could have taken them back and demanded a refund but why waste more money and gas for this mess. I felt very strongly about this situation so this review should be seen by other customers to serve notice to ask "how long ago was the crabs steamed." Re-steamed crabs have a very distinctive non- fresh steam smell and the meat is usually a little tuff to eat. I suggest you avoid any crab that is not put in the pot live and taken directly out the pot for your purchase. Crab Depot, shame on you for selling crabs that you know should have never found it's way to any of your customers table but I also accept my blame for not bringing them back to you for a refund. I have not written the crab depot off for this experience. However, I will never ever by crabs from them that they have steamed. I like to see my crabs alive and well prior to cooking. H.
