Kent was who I expected to come to my house, but an Israeli man came from Camarillo. He walked outside, looked up at my chimney and told me it would cost $1,200 to fill the visible cracks in two bricks. He didn't even go up to look at the crown! I asked him what he was going to do to fix it and he said he would shoot glue in the cracks. He told me to give him a check for $1,200 and he would hold it for 3 days but I had to make a decision right away so he could do it immediately because he didn't know when he was going to be back in Santa Barbara County. I was so confused because Kent is local to Lompoc! He didn't even know who Kent was! Was very uncomfortable and sent him away. Then I checked the business license posted on the fake site and found that it doesn't exist. The man who was in my house made me very nervous and I'm glad because that caused me to refuse any service or negotiation from him. I had been lazy by not going to my fireplace to get Ken's magnetic business card that he gave me over 10 years ago after I bought this house. Kent uncapped and cleaned my chimney, added a gas pipe, a damper, and a fireplace screen. A few years later, I had him come out for a cleaning but he said that I didn't need it. Honestly, I had not been using my fireplace for a while. He didn't charge me for coming out. When the pull chain on my damper broke, he got a new unit and replaced it at no charge. After that fake guy left, I finally got smart and grabbed Kent's business card from my fireplace. I called him and told him what happened. He told me he had heard months before that someone was using his business name. To make a long story short, Kent came out and got on my roof to check out my chimney and the crown. Both needed repair and he came out a few days later, did a thorough repair, completely cleaned the area, and my charge was about half of what the crook wanted me to prepay. Kent is honest, clean, thorough, and absolutely the best and only local to Santa Barbara County chimney sweep that I would ever consider using. We asked around for any of our friends and neighbors that had a similar problem and if so, who did they use to fix it. We had a neighbor with similar issue and gave us a company name. We called, they came out, and didn't even go up in the attic to look at it and quoted us $6500 to replace it. When we asked why they won't inspect it, their response was anything 15 years needs to be replaced. So we opted for a second opinion. Jose from Coastal Breeze Heating and Air came out and climbed up into the attic and gave everything a look over. He found that the capacitor was melted and leaking oil. He replaced it and tested the heat and fan. Everything checked out. He also commented that the furnace is in excellent condition and should last many more years. Parts and labor cost me $245. What a value considering the other company trying to gouge me. A big thank you to Jose. He is based in Lompoc but covers Santa Barbara and San Luis counties. Coincidentally, the same day the furnace was scheduled for service, we had a flood (sewer stoppage), so we thought we'd just go with the same company. Big mistake. The plumber who came was "after hours" so they weren't going to go through warranty, we had to pay $350 just for him to come. He couldn't diagnose source of the problem... he told us he didn't have the equipment, so they would need to continue the next day. The next day, a different plumber from Jerry's came, who had no knowledge of the previous attempt, but after we filled him in, he said he said could do the work, just needed to get us a price, and then he just LEFT without a word... we called Jerry's and they said first that he had other jobs to go to (obviously we weren't a priority), then said we were trying to pay them for the job through our warranty company (we weren't), and they wanted to be paid privately (which we said over and over, we were going to). After an agonizingly patronizing conversation, it was apparent this company had no intention to actually help us (just collect money for showing up) and was ill equipped to neither discuss nor complete the plumbing work needed, so after 2 days of being unable to use our plumbing, we decided to go elsewhere for our plumbing issue (but Jerry's did decide to cash in on the "service call" though, to get paid by our home warranty!!!) A week later, we tried to check on the status of our furnace repair only to find out from our warranty company that Jerry's submitted a "job complete" invoice to them (again, making sure they got paid for not doing any work), and we were going to be transferred to another service provider bc Jerry's was not going to come out to complete the service bc they received a bad review about walking out on our plumbing issue. It is January, the overnight low is going to be 40 degrees, and Jerry's plumbing and heating doubled down on walking away from their customer, literally leaving us in the cold, without explanation. They replaced portions of the sheeting and it was not cut to fit, leaving gaps in the rafter joints. The sheet metal channel was not installed with proper alignment to drain rain water efficiently. Small areas of facia board replacement were not cut properly and the joint caulking was not actually caulking but spackle compound. They tore an eighteen inch gash in my slider screen and did not have it repaired. They were also hired to replace additional fascia board and never returned to finish the job. I learned my lesson, a handshake is worthless.
