Amazing place!! We ride motor cycles here to eat. Always get great food and great service!! Highly recommend the fried pickles!! I love the environment, the people, the decor. It's exactly the kind of place I choose to go out of my way to get to. Cougar Bar & Grill, don't change a thing ! Unfortunately it appears from other reviews some Portlandia types went exploring the forest in their Prius looking for a Starbucks & accidentally stumbled on this place.

We stumbled upon this place after we determined that a picnic in the smoky air was not going to happen. Service was good. Very kind and funny ladies. Food was typical bar food but that chicken fried steak burger was something else. Chili was so-so and we were a little thrown off by the salad we ordered in what appeared to be a metal dog bowl. I'd say though, If you can wait the 30 min drive to woodland to grab some food - do it.

Stopped in for lunch while on a scenic drive in the area. Since it was a nice sunny day, we opted to sit on the outdoor patio. The patio has plenty of shade available and nice wrought-iron tables and chairs. Their menu is pretty big with a variety of options. We ended up ordering the Cougar cheese steak with tator tots and the Halibut basket with tator tots. Both were satisfying. The Halibut was cooked perfectly, nice and flaky. The tots were good too...not greasy at all. The cheese steak had a nice ratio of meat and veggies. They have a decent sized gravel parking lot. Service was friendly and attentive. Bathrooms were clean. Would definitely recommend.

The service was a little slow but that may have been because there was only one server and I only saw one girl in the kitchen kicking butt. My burger was excellent and the fries were non traditional and tasty.

The cougar bar and grill is a no frills bar with a decent menu and beer selection - a note they have nothing on tap (beer wise). The decor is a combination of Logger and Hunter with a giant suit of armor in the corner to make everyone a bit confused. The staff was very friendly! The restaurant is pretty small and the kitchen was slammed where we arrived. We ended up waiting almost 45 minutes for our food, but it wasn't too big of a deal - the servers did their best to keep people posted about food and were very apologetic. The food was pretty good, I ordered a cheeseburger with fries. The fries were fantastic and served hot. The burger was greasy and was not that flavorful, but it did the job of filling me up - I couldn't finish the serving size.

My PIC (sister) and I rolled up here after conquering the nearby Upper Ape Cave of the famed Ape Caves. We were greeted immediately, which was a blessing. The hostess / server advised us a moment or two to clean and disinfect the recently vacated booth. We posted up, and perused the menu. The decor is a log cabin / country feel to it. The TVs had a sign "no professional / college sports games or teams will be played", along with a no Wi-Fi advisory. Guess all y'all will haveta to talk with each other. Our beers were ice cold, and fast to the table by our server that wasn't the hostess. My sister ordered the BigFoot Burger which "forced" my hand into The Eruption. BigFoot was an open faced burger with 2 patties, chili cheese fries, nacho cheese and topped with onions. The Eruption was GINORMOUS!! It's a chicken fried steak base with about 2 pounds of mashed potatoes covered with delicious country gravy, cheddar cheese and bacon pieces covered as it was the open side of Mt. St. Helens. My sister gave up 50% of hers in favor of more room for beer. I made a honest dent into The Eruption (see photos) Great place with flare, and good small town feel.

Nope. Food was gross. The flies inside didn't help. Went across the street to the Lone Fir. Way better.

Their gift shop is stocked well with items that folks might actually need while going into ape caves or summiting Mt st Helen's. The restaurant portion here has one of the juiciest most flavorful burgers I've had- no joke. It came with shoe string fries that had seasoning (I believe it was rosemary). I also had the huckleberry lemonade and a hot coco and both were excellent. The staff were all very kind, welcoming, quick, and helpful. They even helped us find the weather report for Mt. St. Helens summit the next day and gave us some tips for having a successful hike. We stayed one night in a two twin room. The room was well decorated and clean as well as the beds being decently comfortable. Unfortunately the restroom had some things get missed during the clean. There were baby spiders all over the ceiling and climbing down the walls, it smelled strongly of urine, and there were globs of hair on the floor and in the shower- we had to use a hand towel to tidy up the floor and kill as many of the spiders as we could. This wasn't my first time staying here, so I know the bathroom being like that is not the norm- must have just been missed by accident. If I need to stay in Cougar in the future I would definitely still stay here again.

Friendly folks and a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere were what I first noticed. Every breakfast option seemed very positive making the decision difficult. I ended up choosing the brisket hash and I think I chose well. This humongous plate includes perfectly prepared breakfast potatoes, with generous chunks of forktender brisket interspersed throughout, then two eggs, and finally a magnificent sausage gravy over the top. It was glorious. The potatoes have a candied Anaheim chili, which I really enjoyed, and in retrospect would like to have had even more of the chili, but this was a great enhancement. My breakfast companion had the buttermilk pancakes, which included three large, delicious, buttermilk pancakes, a berry compote, two eggs and bacon. Very tasty pancakes (I'm very fussy about buttermilk pancakes because I make them well myself so I can sometimes be critical of others.) All positive critique for these cakes! The coffee was very good and they did a good job of keeping our cups filled. We were there on a Sunday morning at opening time and I was concerned that it might get very busy, but it wasn't too bad at all. Not overly loud so it was great to be able to conduct a conversation and enjoy our breakfast. My companion is a cinnamon roll connoisseur, but since neither of us could even come close to finishing our generous proportioned breakfasts, we ordered a cinnamon roll to go. She has reported back that it was beyond amazingly good! The only negative was on the receipt, which gives guidance on gratuities for 20%, 25%, and 30%, which seems, perhaps, presumptive. I consider myself to be a generous tipper, but seldom go higher than 22% for magnificent service. Management might want to reconsider this suggestive message on receipts that are already near the high end for purchased meals and drinks.

You can absolutely smell the fish and vinegar as soon as you walk through the door, which I think gives the place a very homey pub feel. I ordered a spiked peach Arnold Palmer, which I enjoyed (and it was pleasantly strong) and a glass of the house white, which was good for the price. Our server was very fast and attentive. To eat I got the tomato soup with a grilled cheese, which was absolutely fantastic. The soup was so creamy and flavorful, and I cannot imagine a better meal after spending all day walking outside in the rain. The fries were super crispy and I liked the batter. My partner and I shared some of their breadsticks, which were deliciously baked (fresh!) and came with a super refreshing basil crema and a nice tomato-y dip. Wonderful all. My partner ordered fish and chips, and was surprised to find that it is one large fillet of fish, not multiple pieces like you would typically expect. He said the fish was fine, but a little tough. Overall, a wonderful experience. I definitely hope to return. I highly recommend this place as a refuge during the cold winter months!
