Also, I recently picked up an old knitting habit and wanted to replace some old yarn. It was nice to see an area dedicated to yarn, other crafts, and other hobbies. I can say I really got lost inside the store, discovering so much. I saw some frames to purchase to make a gallery wall. I made the drive down and the gentlemen who worked there asked me what I was looking for in terms of comfort then walked me through my options. I made my selections and two days later the cushions were ready for pickup. My sofa feels brand new and so much more comfortable than it was before that I can't believe I didn't think to do this sooner. And the cost of getting foam for all four cushions was *very* affordable, especially when compared to what it would have cost to get the work done by one of the upholstery stores in town. Honey Bee Quilt store was my destination as I was seeking a quilt restoration location. Honey Bee Quilt store was lined with beautifully designed and sewn quilts. Interestingly, you can rent a large quilting machine in store. Someone was sewing a quilt while I was in the store. Of the quilt stores I have frequented, Honey Bee has the largest and most intricately sewn quilts. When I was small child, I remember my mother hand sewing these beautiful quilts. These were not the beautiful quilts with perfect squares, octagon or star patterns. In addition, they did not have the white filling that some quilts have nowadays. However, they were extremely warm, cozy and made with love. My mother sewed her quilts from clothing that her children no longer wore and from pieces she found in thrift stores. The inside of her quilts were clothing laid flat and tacked together. Rewinding to those times, I sat in a red Mexican wooden chair with little colorful flowers across on the back of the chair with a strong Raffia like seat. As my mother sat and sewed her quilts, I read to her, which is first how I gained a love for reading. While I grew up in a single parent household, it was filled with a tremendous amount of love and laughter. My father died as result of a work-related accident when I was 7 seven years old. I associate my mom's quilt with the love in our household and my love of her. Fast-forward to today, my one and only quilt I have from my mom has materials that are moving around. Therefore, they need to be redistributed and tacked down. This restoration effort first led me to a store on Anderson Lane and then to Honey Bee Quilt store. Unfortunately, both stores only sale sewing supplies and/or sewing machines. I met the nicest woman at Honey Bee that referred me to a Sewing Guild in Austin. So, I am extremely hopeful that one of the ladies in the Sewing Circle can help restore my mom's quilt, which has a great deal of intrinsic and sentimental value.

Tucked into a shopping strip I wasn't sure what to expect but the fabric selection was nice and it varied from my normal local quilt shop so that was fun. The staff were friendly and they were extremely busy. I really loved the selection of patterns and pattern books. Definitely plan to go back and peruse a bit more leisurely next time. Open Monday-Saturday and nowhere close to my home office, I'm limited on when I can get there, but will be worth the effort now and then.

What an excellent little shop! Much more intimate and less distracting than going to Joann's or another big box store. The little place was loaded with all sorts of great prints that I certainly haven't seen elsewhere. I quickly loaded up my hand with 14 different fat quarters, dreaming of projects that one day may or may not come into fruition. Such is the way! What I especially liked was the old school furniture tucked away in places throughout the store. I saw a couple of old Singers with their lovely polished wood, and they made excellent use of old cubbies for letter sorting. I'm a mild antique buff (rubbed off on me from my dad and his mother) and appreciate when something old finds a new home and use. The cubbies were filled with 4x6 postcards of fun quilts you could try, with the design on the glossy front and the instructions on the back. I believe these were free of charge, to help give customers inspiration. Too neat! There was an ample selection of colors as well as more exciting fabrics. Many floral designs and stately or muted tones of browns. Definitely good for finding a fabric to coordinate with but not detract from your main piece. I picked up a couple of plaids, which are always useful. There was a seasonal section (currently loaded with Christmas fabrics) that I imagine likely rotates throughout the year. There was a sale section for bolts that were running low, and cheapo $5 baggies of various fabrics that mix well. There was a section with felt and a small amount of flannel. Lots and lots and lots of bagged/boxed sets to choose from that have everything you need for a particular design (not my cup of tea-- designing my own piecing is highly satisfying to me). You'll also find other helpful items like thread, buttons, cutters, and the like. A space in the back with a large table for various lessons/classes (looked like there was one going on while we were browsing, but I didn't want to disturb them). There is a restroom available for customers as well.

I especially love the sirdar jewelspun chunky with wool yarn (color blend: mother of Pearl..check out my video for how gorgeous these colors were) where I managed to get two beanies out of a single ball! But the best thing here are the lessons by Carrie Au. I'm a teacher myself and I can recognize an excellent teacher and Carrie is absolutely that. With just two lessons from her, I was able to basically do everything I needed to make 90% of what I could ever want to make. I then had spent a couple of months crocheting different things and came back for another more advanced lesson. Carrie knows all the yarn arts and can do things both right and left handed. And she has so many helpful tips that she's learned from experience that I never saw on any YouTube video or website tutorial (and in fact there are popular things out there i learned from her were NOT good things to do). If you want to learn (crochet or knitting), so worth coming here to take lessons (beginner through advanced). The other benefit is that their yarns and hooks are good quality so if you start here, you'll have such a better time and be more likely to continue.
