I am glad I came here upon a recommendation of a friend who works with salons. Making an appointment over the phone was easy. They have extended hours during the week and on Saturday. I arrived at my appointment, checked in and without any wait, got to meet Marianna who talked me through how we were going tackle my hair. She heard me when I said I wanted to keep the length and get rid of the dead ends. Marianna explained how much we would have to cut to keep my hair healthy and made certain I was okay with that. She seemed really knowledgeable and experienced. I was really pleased with my haircut and styling. My hair looked great and was definitely a style I appreciated (speaking from someone who never wears product or styles her her). The salon is in one of the Clock Tower buildings and it's one of the more spacious salons I've been to in Westchester. The front area by reception was well-maintained. I had an appointment on the early side so I was a bit surprised to see hair clippings on the chairs and the table tops. Usually salons regularly sweep up in between and after appointments. I would still recommend this place without reservations. I'm glad I found a salon that I can go back to more regularly. I'm used to paying a bit more for my hair cut and style. $70 for a cut and style seems like a reasonable price to me. read more

Confession: I was a serial hair cutter, meaning for a few years I was at a different salon every few months. My needs were simple: long red hair, sometimes with bangs. Yet at every turn, disaster. I came to enjoy dental cleanings more than hair cuts. I attempted to keep up the bangs on my own. You can imagine how badly this all went. Then came the day a neighbor, kindly, advised me to try Cosmopolitan. That was two years ago, and I have not had one bad hair cut since! The upscale shop reminds me more of fancy salons in Pleasantville and Thornwood, vs those found in Putnam. Great selection of jewelry, Vera Bradley (not my thing, but pretty), and the best hair stylists around. The owner, Sheri, has carefully selected a team of women who really know hair. If there's a nicer, more competent staff in the area, let me know. I'm sure you'd have a hard time finding a better cut & color. read more

I first came here 3 yrs ago and got a color refresh from Ellen. It was good and she was knowledgeable and skilled, but she was busy with other clients and a blowout wasn't included which I thought was weird (and annoying) at the time. Didn't come back here until recently for a haircut from Samantha. Glad to see Cosmopolitan now includes blow dry as part of the services instead of an add-on. I wasn't offered a beverage or anything when I walked in though. I got my hair washed and trimmed by her. I guess I'm just used to a little more conversation from a stylist where they confirm how short you want your hair and if you're liking how it looks, etc. However, she did a good job. For $50, I'm not going to complain. It was easy to get an appointment and I got the results I expected. I won't give up my stylist in the city, but I like this place for when I don't want to spend the time and money to hike down to NYC. read more

By far the WORST haircut I have every gotten. First off the stylist, that's giving too much credit, looked like she hasn't had a drink for a couple of days, THE SHAKES... She left a patch of bare skin over my right ear and could not figure out how to blend it in. Her reply after asking if she could fix it, "sorry no, I buzzed it to short." She then proceeded to put in an uneven crooked hard part about a half an inch thick. UGH. I stopped her after that and asked if she could rinse my hair so I could style it before returning back to work. She rinsed my hair without providing a towel soaking the collar on my shirt. NEVER AGAIN with this place, men please proceed with caution. Thank GOD there was a SUPERCUTS across the street who cleaned up her mess. Kudos to them. I was hesitant at first to take a leap and do color changes to my beloved hair, but Christina made me feel comfortable and at ease the entire time. Update* After my failed visiting decided to give them another shot. This time I went with Bethany since she has great reviews here. She is a coloring expert! She fixed the mess that I had from my last visit and gave me great suggestions. She also cut my hair and curled it! It looks AMAZING! I am extremely happy! She's not only a color expert but a genuinely nice person that cares about her work! Thanks Bethany I will be coming back! *3 star review*I didn't wait at all! The girl at the front desk greeted me and offered me coffee. Cristina came out very quickly and introduced herself! I went in for partial highlights and a haircut. I came in at 8:30 and left about 3 hours later. Cristina is very nice and ask what I wanted to do with my hair but she was also busy with other 3 appointments while doing my hair. Usually at my previous salon when I get highlights they color the roots of the rest of my hair so it doesn't look like a washed out blonde but you can actually see the highlights freshened up. She did not do that and just did highlights so it is the first time I come to your salon I didn't know you don't do what my previous salon simply always did! Whether the highlight color is good it doesn't look fresh like I am used to it looks very blonde. The haircut is ok, it took her 5 mins to do it since she had to move to her other appointment. Another girl blow dried it and then Cristina came to ask me what I thought and fixed it a little. I also wasn't aware you can't leave tips on the card so I had to go to the atm and come back. Bullshit. I'm writing on behalf of not me, but my best friend. She was texting me throughout the process of her getting her hair dyed. I was excited for her, because it was something she really wanted to do and the color she chose was adorable. As she updated me throughout the HOURS (I'm talking at LEAST 6 hours or more here.) I started to get angry with the way she was being treated. I tried to reassure her of course, saying things like "it'll look good when it's completely done" and "they're probably taking so long because they're going to make it perfect." I hated seeing her so upset. When she was finally finished she refused to show me photos. She's told me she'd rather shave her head than look like this. I was furious, of course, I was trying to reassure her but I hate that this happened to her. Whoever her stylist was should be fired for the sake of the salon and it's patrons. She should be refunded fully and given a free treatment by someone who actually knows what they're doing, to fix the mess this salon has created. read more

Nikki is, hands down, a sensational stylist and color magician! She has been doing my hair for years, with a brief hiatus when I temporarily relocated, and I couldn't wait to get back into her care. Sometimes I think I moved back just to be reunited with her! Her attention to detail from cut to color to blow out is top notch. I am extremely unhappy with the service is received. First of all, I was treated rudely by multiple employees. Secondly, I went in a day before my appointment so the hair stylist could see my hair. I'm a brunette and she told me that she would get me as close to blond as possible in one day without damaging my hair too badly. I have been seeing Ellen at the Cosmo for about 10 years now. She gives me the most fantastic cut. She understands how my hair falls and works with my facial features. Afterwards I can let my hair airdry and it looks beautiful. I have lived in both Manhattan and Boston since I started going to her and always come back for her cuts and color. I liked my hair dresser, and I've been a few times. However they always seem to book two people per time slot. The last time I wanted to change my hair color to lighter. I told them on the phone I'd need time for two process, to bleach and then color my hair. I told them I'd send a picture to their message box on Facebook and please show it to my stylist. I got there and my stylish said I had only been booked for a color refresh and no one showed her the picture. I tried to find it online again, and found something similar and she told me she did not have time to do it today. I asked at the desk to show her the photo of what I wanted done and they said they couldn't open it. She said the only thing I was booked for was doing my roots with the same color and no time for bleach or lifting of color. I told them I wasn't happy and left without getting anything done, planning to rebook at a later date. HOWEVER, I then received a long argument on the Facebook message I sent that they had booked enough time to do what I had sent in the picture (remember the one they couldn't find or open or find?) and then said that I needed a special appointment for color correction just to consult about my hair color and contradicted their first statement and we went back and forth in long unhappy manner. I won't go back. I've gone to salons and changed my hair color all my life without these problems. I didn't see it as a stylist problem but more that they are trying to overbook their stylists. read more

I am only giving Cosmopolitan any stars because the stylist is an absolute hair-coloring master and an overall lovely woman, but make damn sure you have time to kill because every time you go here, you will wait and it will take forever. I got my roots colored and between the lateness and the having too many clients at once, it took 2 3/4 hours! For roots!!!! 0 stars actually but that's not an option. Made an appointment with Ellen as a new client. A friend had referred me to her. When I arrived I was offered something to drink (coffee, water, WINE!). I should have left at that point. Wine at a hair salon? No thanks. I ended up waiting for 40 minutes. No explanation as to why she was running late and no offer for me to see someone else. It seemed to be normal that a client waits 40 minutes. Not me! Told them I was leaving and only then did the receptionist try to offer an explanation for why she was running behind and offered to "try to find someone else." Should have done that 40 minutes ago! Especially for a new client. Obviously they don't need new clients or they would take better care of them. I can't understand why they take all your information and then still cannot text or call to tell you your appointment is being pushed back. I don't have 40 minutes to wait for a haircut. If you can't keep an appointment time, then don't take appointments! Never again. read more

Funny, I too was a serial hair cutter until I found the Cosmopolitan. My neighbor also had recommended Sheri to me. My neighbor is a transplant from lower Westchester who shops at Lord and Taylor, The Westchester and Neiman Marcus. She has impeccible taste. I want to preface this review by saying that if I could give zero stars I would. I have been going to the Cosmopolitan ever since my junior prom makeup and hair were done here in 2011. In that same year, I became a client of Tania's, but her and this establishment have completely lost any future business from me. Back in June I came in to receive a haircut to even out my hair all to the same length to fix a previous cut done while I was away at school. I asked for a completely even cut with all the strands the same length. Instead of this cut, I received an angled bob with the back of my hair above the nape of my neck and the front with two stringy pieces down to my collarbone. The next day I had to try to fix the issue myself and cut off the only length I had in the front to try to even out my hair. While my experience in June wasn't great, I decided to give Tania another shot as I had been her client for almost 5 years now. So this past Wednesday I went in yet again asking for the same haircut: a blunt cut with all my hair the same length. Tania instead began to tell me that she'll immediately be taking more off the back and leaving more in the front, and I reiterated that this is not what I want and I do not like angled bobs. I guess she must have ignored everything I said as I received everything I said to her more than once that I do not want. She again cut my hair short int he back and longer in the front, but this time my hair is shorter than ever and it will take many months to even grow it out to an acceptable length to get another cut where I will have a new stylist give me a straight and even haircut. To make matters even worse, she used a razor and gave me a one inch UNDERCUT on the bottom of my scalp, taking away the majority of my hair in the back. I did not even notice this until yesterday when I placed my hair into a ponytail for a kickboxing class and my friend pointed it out. How she even perceived that this was something that I wanted based off of what I asked for is beyond me. I am disappointed in the way that Tania blatantly disregarded what haircut I wanted and instead did what she felt like doing to my hair. I am also shocked at how this establishment gouged the prices-my $40 haircut two months ago in June was now $50 in August. And I was only there for 15 minutes! Another disappointment was the new receptionist (there seems to always be a new one) who told me she would immediately notify Tania of my arrival and then continued to not do her job and talk to her friend visiting her at the front desk for another 10 minutes. With this haircut I have completely lost my confidence and the Cosmopolitan has lost any future business and recommendations from me. I will be moving on to a stylist who will actually deliver on what a client wants, even something as simple as a straight cut. read more

This is one of the best hair salons in Putnam County! When I started to hear great things about the Cosmopolitian I was working as a receptionist at a salon. After a few bad colors and cuts from co-workers not listening to what I wanted and not treating me like a client, I found my way over to Cosmopolitian! The receptionist was lovely and booked me with Ellen. To my surprise when I walked in they use Bumble and Bumble and also sell Vera Bradley! I was excited about that! My experience was always up to the standards I hoped it would, considering I worked at a salon. I went to her for color a few times while I let my hair slowly grow out and get back into shape! Finally she gave me a haircut, it was great! She gave me bangs, a good over all shaping and a great blowout! If Ellen was ever busy or out of the salon I used Megan! She's given me some of the best long lasting blowout's I've ever had! I moved to Boston a couple of years ago and try to stop in when I can to pick up product and possible get a blowout! I miss the girls at this salon and although I only got to experience there great customer service for a few months, I try to recommend them to anyone that I can knowing they can expect a great service! Oof. I wanted to love this place and I heard amazing reviews. I had a bad (flat) haircut and decided to come in and give this place a try finally, hoping it would shape up my boring look. I have extremely thick, coarse, curly hair and I should have been alarmed the first time the razor was brought out. My stylist thinned out my entire head of hair and left me with the weirdest layered haircut I've ever had - my hair is thick up top and then all of a sudden drops off and looks like a rat tail at the bottom. No bueno! I love the look of the salon, layout, and bumble products used, but I'm not sure how diverse their clients are so unless you have generally easy to manage hair, I'd be careful. My hair went from being thick to being bleh in one appointment. I will probably end up chopping a substantial amount off and begin growing healthy hair. read more

I was recommended this shop but honestly, I will never go there again. I was excited for this appointment- it's my birthday and I wanted a cute pale pink hair color and the colorist said that it would be no problem to do. The senior colorist even commented how my hair would match the sweater I was wearing. I was sat down at the coloring chair and they stripped my hair in foils, first, followed by the roots. I thought it was standard like any other salon, but they left me there for quite a while- longer than I've normally sat there for when it comes to full head bleaching. Regardless, I waited patiently as she took other clients during my time and when it finally came time to wash the hair is when the real problems began. I could feel the colorist (who was the one washing my hair as well) picking apart my hair, and she left me for a minute at the sink and grabbed someone else that I could not see, and she stopped washing my hair and put what I can only presume was more bleach into the sections she apparently missed. After she re-bleached my entire head without telling me what was going on, she left me at the sink for a good fifteen to twenty minutes. I was washed again and then she sat me at her chair and blew my hair dry. I was a golden blonde at this point, which is expected of the bleaching process. She still hadn't said anything up to this point regarding my hair or what she was doing- only small talk. After blowing my hair somewhat dry, I could see that it was already falling out a lot. I touched it and strands broke off like it was a thin piece of ice: it just came apart in my hands. Afterwards she brought me back to the sink, and left me there with no smock (she had taken it away) for another five minutes before coming back with a smock and the dye. As she began to dye my hair in the sink, the woman washing the client next to me commented on how she liked the color. I began to feel good about myself until she said it was Barbie pink. In no way was I looking for Barbie pink- a pale pink is what I wanted but I was reassured that it would wash out, but wash out it did not. Actually, the hair colorist who was still the one washing my hair at this point didn't wash my hair at all, she lightly rinsed it. I don't even remember a shampoo going through it let alone a conditioner. When I was FINALLY able to see myself in the mirror I was appalled. The Barbie pink did not wash out and I looked like a damn pixie. The worst part was that the color was not consistent. My scalp was Barbie pink while the rest was a slightly muted color of that, and the ends were still blonde! I couldn't help but cry right there, and she offered a blow dry and a cut (for an extra cost each, of course) but I told her not to touch my hair anymore. I will never be going back to that salon. "expertly trained in the latest trends and techniques the cosmopolitan team of stylists and colorists are here to give you that change you've been thinking about. ...come on you know you have pictures of that color you love or that cut you've always wanted." This is the statement on their website, but it could not be further from the truth. This woman was not an expert and certainly could not have been trained in a simple hair coloring like this! She wanted an old photo of mine too to compare before and after, but she wasn't taking any photos when she saw how bad of job it turned out to be! 0/10 would definitely not recommend to anybody. On a separate note, as soon as I went home (almost 7 hours after the initial starting time) I ran my hair through the shower and now I'm blonde with a side of pink. Not a very good blonde, either. Splotchy with brown patches in it still. I didn't think anybody could be this bad but boy was I proven wrong today! read more

I've waited a few weeks before writing this review I wanted to give someone of "importance" a chance to contact me, never happened. I found this salon on yelp. Chose my stylist Tonya based on reviews. Two ok cuts and an okay highlight...great actually compared to what's available to me in my area, drove an hour to this salon. Last visit...disaster. Wanted A touch up/roots taken care of and ended up in tears. Bleached spotty disaster .. My picture of cut and color completely ignored. Useless to get into specifics. Real test was the fix. She chose to die my hair BLACK, never dried it to check the color, never dried it to check the screwed up cut with hunks out and random spots off. Worst part is that she totally knew it was fd up and did nothing. Cost a fortune. Bad ownership...bad stylist....bad salon. If the owners didn't know all this, shame on them. Stay away. read more

I was suppose to get my haircut by Shari ,my daughter mentioned that she needed a haircut so I gave her my appointment,as I was sitting there waiting for my daughter I was looking around and noticed the only male hairdresser(John Carlo) he really took attention to detail,the woman in his chair looked amazing when she left.t that moment I realized I had found my new hairdresser,I scheduled an appointment with him and it was like he read my mind exactally what I was looking for, I LOVE MY HAIRCUT!! This is a top-notch salon with knowledgeable and skilled stylists who are up on current trends. I have been a client for about 7 years and have tried several other salons in the area. I enjoy the ambience of the Cosmopolitan, which is more upscale for the area. I also enjoy watching the stylists do their best to make sure that every client leaves looking fabulous. The only draw-backs are time and cost. For a cut and single-process color, I am always there for at least three hours. They use a glaze after the color which adds to processing time and clients are staggered, so you may have to wait for your cut while your stylist is finishing someone else's blow-dry. Prices are high for Putnam, which recently lead me to try another salon (for the above, I paid $130 compared to $85 in another salon and I was out the door in 2 hours). However, if time and money are not an issue, I would recommend this salon as the best in the area. I recommend requesting the owner, Sheri, John, Ellen, Tania or Tiffany.
