I needed a refresh and new eyes on an outdated style. I took a leap and booked an appointment online. The system paired me with Gianna. I have a lot of hair, and it had not seen scissors or color since early January, except for that frightful bangs trim I gave myself. I was a little nervous about the reception I would receive. When I arrived for my appointment, I was greeted by Daniel, who checked me in and offered me a beverage. I accepted the offer of water, but that Mimosa was pretty tempting on a Friday afternoon! Shortly thereafter, I met Gianna. What a love! We hit it off right away. And she didn't hate my hair! She looked at a photo of how I'd like it cut, we talked about the color and since it had been so long, she took 2" off the ends, cut a bunch of layers into the style and gave me the refresh I so desperately needed! The salon itself is nicely decorated and trendy. There are several style stations and a separate room with more stations and an area with sinks and an area for mixing color. All of the stylists and assistants were friendly and really appeared to like what they do. It was nice to see that the stylists supported and complimented each other's work. I booked a return appointment when I paid and truly look forward to going back. I will definitely recommend Whip Salon to my friends! I'm sorry, I didn't take photos! read more

All but two of the most recent reviews refer to Sandy Hook Hair Company, which closed in 2019 (see history description) after nearly 25 years. The owner, Bonnie Fredericks, retired and the stylists work elsewhere. Salon Newtown is part of an expanding franchise (https://www.whipsalon.com/franchise). This franchise location was bought in 2019 by a stylist known as Marcelle Tiffany. The salon is tastefully decorated, making most of the limited space. Parking is easy. Of note, the salon is acting as a trailblazer of sorts ... participating in the Local Green Salon initiative, in which chemical-contaminated metal waste from color treatments are recycled. Wondering about the name? In a Nov/Dec 2019 SalonToday.com article, the franchise founder, Amy Pai, claims it's a slang term for hair. As it's the first reference I've come across, perhaps it's a term she created to help the franchise stand out. Adding to confusion, the "slang" term is popularly used as a verb in salon promotions (e.g. #getwhipped ) , inviting speculation about the origin of inspiration. Diana and GiGi (sorry if I misspelled!) were able to quickly fill in for a stylist who was sick on my wedding day! The team of two were able to tackle ELEVEN heads of hair in 6 hours straight. And they did a wonderful job. I looked like I walked straight off the red carpet at the Oscars. And they were so patient and kind with both of my nieces (my flower girls). They did exactly what they asked for and more - adding sparkles and making them feel like princesses. I couldn't recommend Diana and GiGi enough. 5 stars! read more

I also more recently began getting my color done, and I am so thrilled with the way it looks at nearly half the price of other salons in the area! Marcelle, the owner, always checks in to make sure I like my hair, even offering to make changes if necessary to make sure I'm completely satisfied. Marcelle is a kind, knowledgeable, and professional salon owner, and you can tell she treats her staff with love & respect because they are all kind, knowledgeable, and professional too! I am new to the area and did not do my research before booking an appointment with a different salon. I came into WHIP with a hair emergency so I was not on the schedule for that day. I had planned to go in and make an appointment and come back but instead they were able to squeeze me in and help me out. They were beyond professional and understanding. They had to completely strip my hair to fix it and basically reverse what had already been done by the other place. They were able to fix my hair while still making it feel healthy and brining it back to my usual color. They were all so kind to me throughout this situation and silver lining was I now have a new hair place that I trust will listen and give me the hair I'm looking for. They even blew it out and styled it for me. I could not recommend this salon enough and now I'm excited for my next appointment!! read more

I finally got my haircut properly after cutting it myself during Covid. I can't tell you how wonderful it was to have my hair washed by someone else, I'm mad at myself for not remembering his name, but it was an extra treat that I wasn't expecting. I would love to go back for a wash and 10 minute massage by the same person. Marcelle cut my hair and WOW did she do a great job! She blew it dry after the cut and brought out the shine I hadn't seen in a very long time. I loved it so much I went back for a blow dry the night I was going to dinner for the first time in 2 years. This was such a great experience that this will now be my hair home. If you're looking for a new spot to get treated with a smile and great cut, try this one out. Let's keep them in Sandy Hook. Today was my first time going to this salon. It's beautiful-- full of light and pics of Ms. Dolly Parton! Debbi made me feel so comfortable right off the bat. The scalp massage was an amazing treat and absolutely worth $15! I still feel relaxed and it's 7 hours later. My haircut and blowout were much needed. Debbi takes pride in her work and it shows. I just got a trim today but I'm looking forward to some highlights when the weather gets warmer. read more

This looks like 5 star salon but the service was not. This was my first time here and it was very awkward when you first walk in. There was no seating so I just stood there waiting for my stylist. There was a waiting room (I think?) in the middle of the salon but no one let me know. I didn't wait long so that was good. My stylist took me back to wash my hair and the water was freezing cold. She apologized and mentioned that it happens when it gets busy. So they're aware it's an issue. Not 5 Star. My stylist was extremely distracted the whole time. Many times stopping to chat with others. My cut was very basic (which I wanted) but I mentioned I was going out to a party later that night. You'd think since my cut was so simple she'd spend a little extra time on my blow dry so I'd look great for the night. Nope. She didn't put any product in my hair and put no effort in the blowout. She even flipped my hair out like I'm 5?? I had to ask her to brush the ends under. There was also a walk in that came at the same time as my appointment. I felt extremely rushed so that she could take the walk-in. Why rush a new customer (with an appointment) like that? This was a super cuts level experience. Not a 5 star salon. My daughter is very particular about her hair & wont let anyone cut or color it. She has long blond hair and wanted a purple ombré. She was able to bring Meg pictures of the style she wanted and Meg was able to replicate it to a T. She was very content and will definitely go back ! read more

A million stars! I went to see my stylist Erica for some magic. I first walked in and the salon was beautifully rustic and modern. Everyone was friendly and conversational, I got a complimentary glass of wine, and it smelled amazing! I went to SHH for the first time today for a color correction. Isabella is a GODSEND and I swear I'm never letting anyone else touch my hair! She took my splotchy, uneven, yellow "color melt" and turned it into the perfectly blended honey blonde balayage I had initially aimed for. She did such a beautiful job blending my natural color back in to break up the yellow I came in with, making it more vibrant and much more flattering for my skin tone. Update: I've been back a few times since my first rating and while I really do like the salon, my experiences haven't been as great as my first. I left the salon after a color with my roots a completely different color than the rest of my hair color. It was unusual and looked terrible (think reddish orange against black against light bayalage). Since the salon was closed the next day and I was headed off to vacation, I went in a few weeks later to get my roots fixed. I showed up at the salon on time and wasn't seated until 30 minutes after my appointment. I did appreciate that everyone was very gracious and offered me a beverage while I waited, though. When it was my turn, I pointed out the bad roots and mentioned that didn't want my hair as dark as the previous coloring job. After it was done, roots were thankfully fixed and my hair looked OK in the light at the salon. When I got home, my hair looked jet black and my family asked me WTF I did. It just does not look natural. But at this point I'm just way too exhausted with all my previous hair mishaps to try again The most frustrating part is that no one offered to reimburse me for the first botched job, and charged me full price for the second coloring even after I graciously pointed out it was their mistake. I really hate writing bad reviews, but this just had to be said because I paid a lot for hair I really don't love and want to hide in a hat. I do truly think the crew at Shh is wonderful but I just wish they were a little more attentive to my situation! read more

I called the salon as a new client at the end of November and was able to get an appointment the first weekend of December. The receptionist was very friendly and accommodating. I had a cut and full foil highlight done by Courtney about four days ago. She did an incredible job! This was my first time visiting the salon and I was immediately greeted by friendly faces. The entire atmosphere of the salon was positive and really welcoming. The stylists all appear to get a long really well and the place has a lot of personality. I have been getting my hair cut and highlighted the same way for more than ten years. It being my first time with a new stylist I was a little uneasy. My fears were immediately quieted when Courtney started performing her magic. The prices were very reasonable for such exceptional work. I could not be happier with my experience and how great my hair looks now! I would highly recommend this salon. read more

We travel from Ridgefield CT... where if you throw a rock, you'd most likely hit a Salon... about a half hour north to pretty Sandy Hook to see Samatha at Sandy Hook Hair Co. Sam is a whiz with cut and color. She's done my color and styling since 2001 (and somehow has been able to keep up with my ever expanding and stubborn gray) and my daughters' cuts since her very first "baby cut" in 2007. (Including everything from a nasty knot removal and chlorine damaged Swimmers hair to beautiful Princess Ball styles that would make Cinderella's fairy godmother proud). We love Sam for her talent but also because she's sweet and fun and makes the whole experience a true pleasure. Everyone at SHHC is great. The salon is clean and bright with friendly, knowledgeable staff. Can't recommend it highly enough. Wish there were 6 stars. read more

Just went with my daughter today under the new name. Had an appt with sandy hook hair and booked last week assuming it would be the same $55 price it's been since I've started bringing her there. Today under the new name it ended up costing $75. Kind of steep for a 13 year old hair cut in my opinion. It's too bad since we liked the place a lot but it's way too expensive now. read more

Moving to Florida from Newtown, CT, I've come to the unfortunate realization that I cannot find anyone that will care or understand my hair like Bonnie and the SHH Co staff. In one ten minute "hair emergency" phone call , Bonnie was able to tell me exactly what the hair dressers in Florida were not understanding about my hair, two simple product changes and how to explain what I need when I get a haircut down here. That last part was a not necessary though because I'm not letting anybody but Bonnie touch my hair again! We did hair here for my friend's wedding (six bridesmaids, one bride, two mothers and therefore many updos). The salon staff was nothing but friendly and accommodating, and each girl came out with a beautiful hairstyle for $85. We all looked and felt beautiful and the styles lasted the whole day--from photos to the very end of the reception! They also provided a lovely breakfast spread for us. Long story short: I left my salon I had been going to for almost a year in tears last night. My balayage was completely destroyed, my entire head was shit brown, and my hair was fried. I chose Sandy Hook Hair literally on online reviews alone and figured something was better than nothing... so I called. The receptionist told me to come down immediately and someone would fix me the best they could. The entire staff was amazing and Brandon did such a good job with my hair. I'm certainly not much of a yelper, but my experience here was so awful that I feel the need to warn others in search of a hair salon in the area because, thankfully, there are many options to choose from and therefore I I certainly advise that you do not choose this one. Having grown up in Sandy Hook, I recently had come back in town and was in need of a cut and color, simply choosing Sandy Hook Hair Co because it was the closest to my address and I wanted to support a local business, and also try a new salon. From the moment I sat down in the chair, I was treated so rudely that I had several urges to just stand up and walk out. I swallowed my pride, thinking "i'm already here and in the chair" , and chose to stay hoping to just smile through the attitude and 'get it over with' so that I can move on to other errands. I regret staying. Every simple idea I wanted for my color was met with a frustrated 'it'll take too long' or 'I think it won't look good', or "we close in a couple of hours, I'm not sure if we'll have enough time". I was talked down to tremendously and treated as if I was a burden. After my hair was styled and "complete" the chair was turned around and I just wanted to cry. The color was just awful and worse then if I had gone up the street to the local hair school. What I believe to be worst of all, is that I was quoted $85 for cut and color and was charged $120 at the register. I felt sick to my stomach and outraged over the entire experience and am so appalled by the audacity of both the Hairstylist/ Colorist for their attitudes, the results and the 'bait and switch' pricing that I cannot even get myself to go back into the salon to demand my money back. I have been getting my hair styled and colored for over 16 years, throughout many states and even across Newtown/ Sandy Hook in the past and have never experienced what I went through here, and hope to never again. For the record, it cost me $160 at another local salon to get the color fixed - they were kind, well mannered and ready to listen and assist- even stating that what I had asked for color wise from Sandy Hook Hair Co was easy and simple and it was confusing how my hair ended up so awful from that request, I certainly didn't have an answer for them, only a "thank you". read more
