They opened this branch many moons ago now - it's far larger than the other stores dotted around Derby. They have a larger selection and even a sit-down area (additional cost to items). My favourites include their cream bun, trifle, vanilla cream slice, cream meringue and apple puff. They also do confectionary, breads and savoury pastries and pies. It's a great spot to pick up something delish whilst shopping in town, there's also an express branch inside the Westfield Centre.

On my visit to Burton last week we decided to head to the Coopers Tavern on Cross Street…read more Unfortunately they only serve food on Sundays so order any of their tasty sounding home cooked dishes. So instead we ordered platters for our group of 12 from The Granary Canvas about 10 minutes away. The landlady was quite happy for us to do this and there were a few other tables of people eating take out food too. The staff at the Granary Canvas were incredibly friendly and we had no problems with pre-ordering food over the phone and paying over the phone. The prices were good and the portion sizes were very big and having it all delivered to the pub for us was great too.

First the good - the owners are a really friendly and sociable couple - from Lithuania it turns out. Really nice people. The place is spotlessly clean, and not busy. Also a cute old water mill (and a stuffed fox that a local kid found an eye-catcher) encased in glass as you walk in. The drinks were OK (we both had cider) however the food offerings could benefit from a little more love. The yelp page shows a link to menu but it does not work :(

A large well set out car park leads you to the entrance, with its magnificent working water wheel - a great window into its past life as a working water mill. The bar has an informal type setting, large comfy sofas, and an eclectic mix of different type tables. Along with the roaring open fire, it all adds to the sociable, chilled out and relaxed feel of the Mill Wheel. A variety of bar snacks and a good range of hot of cold drinks, make it an ideal place to have lunch. The upstairs restaurant area has more formal classical air to it. Bathed with light during the day, it has a very contemporary feel. The menu is a la carte and has a great variety of different dishes, which are refreshed with daily and weekly specials. Although there is a deal on two courses from a restricted menu, the restaurant is still fairly pricey. The food is of a high quality though, the vegetarian Lasagne with a Swiss Chard base and the lamb tagine are particular favourites. Some of the dishes can be a bit style over substance though, but on the whole the food is full of flavour and very individual. A great place to go for a special occasion.

The staff seemed knowledgeable and helpful too. The ice cream section had a good range of flavours, but was a little small in comparison, to achieve co-billing with the butchers. Similarly the bakery products seemed a little limited, but the rolls and loaves present did look impressive. The rest of the establishment is an eclectic mix of groceries for the moored marina boats, and a range of relishes, sauces and marinades to go with the great selection of meat. There was also a good range of home grown fruit and vegetables, bigger than either the ice cream or bakery section! High ceilings, rustic beams and fittings add to the ambiance of a shop that cannot seem to make up its mind what it wants to be.

It does as it says on the tin, sells meat, bread (and cakes) and ice cream. Apart from the quality of their produce, another thing that really impresses me is that you never have to queue for long to get served, and the staff are friendly and helpful. They often seem to remember you and what you had during you last visit, which to me is like a personal service.

This would be a wonderful place to sit in the summer because it is a bit a sun trap. The courtyard is fairly large and the walls are adorned with old food signs like Brooke Bond tea. Inside the spacious nature continues, with tables of varying sizes, both upstairs and downstairs; it never feels cramped like some cafes can feel. Menu wise, very comprehensive, from breakfasts to lunches and more formal dinners. Prices seem initially on the high side for the food, but when you see what you get for your money, you'll see why. We've only dined there for breakfast, and are yet to try the delightful cakes on offer or the tempting looking lunches. However, the breakfasts fare is very impressive, from a full English Breakfast, to generous sausage and egg cobs, to my personal favourite - the scrambled eggs on toast. Too often scrambled eggs can be tasteless, but at the Courtyard Cafe they are a real triumph, full of flavour and a portion to fit even the heartiest of appetites. Haven't hit on a decent hot drink to go with it yet though, the coffee is very weak and flavourless, still it will be fun trying when the food is this good!
