You can still smoke in some Florida bars - who knew? Coming from LA this was .... special. The smoking crowd reminded me of those bad boys in high school who you wonder where they would be in ten years... I think I found them. And life has not been too kind. This bar is probably not for everyone, but it appears to have some loyal followers especially if you are a smoker. There are some redeeming qualities like decent pool tables and cheap drinks. My friends drank and played some pool. When we left we had picked up a new cologne call "Ode de Smoke" circa 1980.

Corner Pub, also known as Shannon and Anthony's Corner Pub, is a neighborhood (Wilton Manor) gay bar tucked in at the end of an elderly, and it really does show its age, little strip mall on the west side of Andrews Avenue. Corner Pub is a rather generic type of gay neighborhood bar with nothing particularly special about it. It has the usual pool table, juke box type music containing tunes, mostly older, left over from the disco era, patrons who are mostly late thirty something on up, all very friendly mostly engaging in typical bar room conversation. They have pool (as in pool table) and dart meets, leagues, tourneys or whatever they may call them, provide a home bar site for the Stonewall Knights, which is a gay motorcycle club for gay aficionados of motorcycle riding, with all of the members who actual do have and ride motorcycles for their own fun as well as in neighborhood gay day parades and other social events. Being a neighborhood bar, the bar in Corner Pub serves as a social center for community talk, discussion and is active in things related to the gay community. Though well lighted inside, most everything is dark or painted black including the suspended ceiling tiles so typical to strip mall locations. There is a large rectangular bar with extremely friendly, competent bartenders serving very reasonably priced drinks. The pool table, juke box, a rack of local flyers and magazines plus a clutter of old boxes (I don't know why) are located near the rear. There is plenty of parking in the strip mall lot for the size of the crowd Corner Pub attracts, and with Island City Pizza next door, there is no problem in having your food order delivered to you right at the bar. It's clear that Corner Pub is meant to be and is a general gay neighborhood meeting bar, not into the frolic of or meant to be a gay tourist or wild life fun attractive place. It serves its community and the community in turn patronizes it. I wouldn't recommend it for tourists, those out seeking fun times, dancing, entertainment or out on the town nights because you'll probably get bored to tears, but if you just want a good drink, play a game of pool or catch up on local events, Corner Pub is an OK place to do that.

I had the Shepard's pie. The food and the drinks were amazing. The service was fantastic. It was incredibly personable despite the size of our group. Even though it is a freestanding restaurant, I am told that it can be difficult to find a spot. The venue offers live music on weekend evenings, but we finished eating before it began and were too tired to stay. The restaurant oozes the Irish pub decor and theme. Our waiter, Jordan, was exceptionally friendly and jovial. And he was a master at suggesting alcoholic beverages, once you let him know your likes. We had 2 orders of Irish potato soup, 2 Shepherd's pies with cheddar cheese, 2 orders of the Guinness beef and mushroom pie, 1 cabbage rolls, and one fish and chips. The soup was filled with bacon bits and creamy and luscious. The Guinness pot pies were a bit small, especially because they were so savory. The accompanying mashed potatoes did not come with gravy and there wasn't enough from the pot pies to cover it. The veggies that came with all the entrees were freshly made and without any seasoning. (But it is better to add salt and pepper than to try and remove it.) The fish was a decent size serving, but again, no real seasoning. Nothing that some salt, pepper, and malt vinegar couldn't rectify. The coating was light and crispy. Our alcoholic beverages (Guinness, wine, and a couple of specialty cocktails) were thirst quenching and satisfying. (I loved my prickly pear margarita.) Dinner for 6, including 2 soups, 6 entrees, 8 drinks, tax, and tip was $300.

When we first pulled up, the parking lot was nearly empty, and inside there were only a few people scattered around. My companion went straight to the restroom, so I found a seat at the bar. The first thing we were told was that the kitchen was already closed even though it was only 9 PM which was a bit disappointing since I was hungry. Since it's an Irish pub, they mainly serve beer and wine, so I ordered a Guinness followed by a light beer. Despite the slow start, the night turned out to be unexpectedly enjoyable. We ended up meeting some wonderful people from Italy, Poland, and Turkey. It was especially nice connecting with the gentleman from Turkey, as I had traveled there last year, and we had a great conversation about that experience. The same went for the gentleman from Italy. It was refreshing and easy to talk to everyone. Even after closing, we stayed outside for a while continuing our conversations. The atmosphere inside the pub had a classic Irish feel, very reminiscent of my time in Ireland years ago, with signed celebrity photos decorating the walls adding to its charm. Also money from various countries. The lady behind the bar was extremely friendly and attentive throughout the night, constantly checking in and making sure we were taken care of. It's been years since I last visited, but after this experience, I'll definitely be going back soon.

However, if you happen to be into having some good beers, some barbecue, even a rack of gator ribs (the only place in Florida that I know of that has them), a Po Boy or other great sandwich, and enjoy good jazz jam sessions you'll have found a piece of heaven in Alligator Alley. I remember the place from many years ago when it was located on Commercial but back then as with today, run my Kilmo, a lover of anything Florida, a jazz aficionado and a darn good bass guitarists. Hence one of the best things about Alligator Alley is that it isn't so much operated as a business, so there's never any hype or sales pressure. It's operated by the owner more as a labor of love allowing enjoy all things Florida, some of his great foods, beers and both listen to and join in on playing jazz. When I was here last I had their ribs which I have to say were really good along with a draught glass of dark beer. And later with some other customers with whom I soon became friends (people here are super friendly) tried all sorts and kinds of Belgium and German beers. Then, while doing so, listened to the sounds of some really fine jazz jam session, basically of a guitar, electric bass and drums. And, of course without having to pay a cover charge or exorbitant drink prices.
