I had the great pleasure to attend a field trip to the Cookie Cottage with my Journalism class about a week ago. The wonderful owner Cathy VandMhen toke 4 hours out of her busy work schedule to spend some time with my class. It did of course give my class and I a perfect opportunity to take a look at the birthday cottage attached to her bakery. When you first walk in you immediately notice the colors exploding everywhere, from the bright blue wall, to the pops of yellow and pink from the curtains. After we got settled I, we started off with a little craft, and an easy recipe for monkey-bread. After the bread was put in the oven, we moved on to decorating cookies. We used ketchup style bottle, filled with a variety of icing colors, to intricately design our cookies. Although many of ours didn't come close to the designs Cathy does on her cookies, it was a very fun, and special experience. We continued on with many other activities that really filled the whole experience with happiness and excitement. Afterwards my class and I had the chance to pick two desserts out of her bakery case. I chose the strawberry short cake cupcake ($2.50) and the sinker doodle sugar cookie ($.50). The cake portion of the cupcake was moist, and had chunks of fresh, sweet strawberries mixed within. The icing was the classic sweet, sugary buttercream which perfectly complemented the cake hiding underneath. To finish off the look and whole strawberry was placed on top, bringing the flavors around in a full circle. The sinker doodle cookie was the "poster child" of a perfect cookie, everything from the crunchy out ring, the chewy center, and the flecks of cinnamon sugar throughout the whole dessert. Although the cookie was amazing it was easy out shined by the strawberry shortcake cupcake I had eaten before. Lastly we got the opportunity to decorate our own vanilla cupcakes to take home. We used mini marshmallows, cut in half, dipped in sanding sugar, aligned in rows, on top of vanilla buttercream, to produce a lotus flower look. In the end they all turned out unique, and were very exciting to make. Overall this cupcake was my favorite. Although it was a basic, simple vanilla cupcake, with plain vanilla buttercream, it was exploding with flavor. The moisture and soft texture of the cake was captivating, perfectly accompanied by a thin layer of sweet, sugary buttercream, cut marshmallows, followed by a crisp crunch of colorful sanding sugar. Overall, the Cookie Cottage was a great experience, and I would not hesitate to go there again, to not only try the delectable desserts once more, but to again thank the wonderful owner, Cathy VandMhen. read more

This place serves the best desserts in the state of Florida! If you're looking for a place where you'll get impeccable service on top of delicious one of a kind cupcakes, cookies, and many other sweets, this is where you'll find it. One item on their menu I can't seem to get out of my mind is their chocolate covered strawberries, honestly, I think I'll buy a whole box all for myself. This is the perfect place for catering any event you can possibly imagine, the owner, Cathy, will see to it you are fully satisfied, and you'll get your moneys' worth. As a teenager, finding hidden gems in a art city like Sarasota is a specialty. A recent gem is The Cookie Cottage located at 335 Gillespie Ave (one street north of main street by the Tea House). I was lucky enough to visit on a school field trip, and when you first walk off the bus the alluring smell of home baked treats and vanilla make your stomach rumble. The owner, Cathy VandeMheen, is kind and enjoyable to learn from and talk to about her business and all the treats hidden inside the cream colored building and red heart on the front side. The walk up the wooden porch intensifies the smell of vanilla, and inside the cow print tables and mix-matched furniture welcome you and direct you to a small glass case full of cupcakes and different flavored cookies. The cookies ($0.50 each) and the cupcakes ($2.50 each) catch your eye and you have to stop to admire the intricate decorations and other treats that make it difficult to decide what to order. I decided to order Cathy's favorite - a vanilla raspberry cupcake with sweet buttercream icing and a raspberry garnish to top it all off. Your eyes can't stop admiring the intricate piping and the golden brown cake that is popping out of the foil wrapper. Your noise is drawn to it and your ears are tuning in to the voices of those around you delighting and squealing with joy at the flavors your about to witness. The cake is soft and perfectly baked and the buttercream is sweat, perhaps just a little to much, but the freshly baked warmth wraps everything in a blanket of delight. The flavors are delicious and the atmosphere is wonderfully warm and like home. The Cookie Cottage is also a great business for birthday parties, as I was able to experience first hand. The building directly, named the Birthday Bungalow, across from the bakery is cute, fun, and family oriented. The crafts were entertaining and creative (and delicious). I will definitely be recommending this business to my family and friends for a long time to come. read more

My favorite dessert had to be her Original Sugar Cookies. The warm, golden-yellow cookies gave my taste buds an emotional outburst of flavors, that made me want to have more and more. When tasting it, you can instantly point out the ingredients used like the flour, eggs and butter. The cookie is then topped with a rich and creamy sugar cream icing with lemon flavors, imported from Ms. Cathy's hometown of Nebraska. It is literally one of the best cookies I have ever tasted. And the desserts doesn't stop there. She offers a whole lot, but if you are a fan of strawberries and chocolate, I would definitely recommend her chocolate covered strawberries, that will make your salivary glands run like a faucet! For example, they make all different kinds of cookies(all cookies for .50), all sorts of different flavors of cupcakes(all cupcakes for $2.50), and if there are any holidays that are near by she will whip up festive treats for those occasions as well. I prefer the Vanilla Raspberry cupcake, it has a moist, soft texture with a fruity, tart taste. Next to the Cookie Cottage, there is a small house called the Birthday Bungalow. They throw usually five to six kid's birthday parties a week there, but it's not always used for birthday parties. Former teacher Cathy Vandemheen opened the sweet little cottage in June 2013 after moving to Florida on a whim. Her array of cookies, cupcakes, and scones have really taken off upon opening. What makes her bakery so unique is the wide selection of exclusive flavors she creates like banana oatmeal cookies, blueberry lemon scones, and salted caramel cupcakes just to name a few. The prices are realistic, unlike most shops that sell a cupcake for seven dollars. At the Cookie Cottage you can get gourmet cupcakes for two dollars and fifty cents and quality cookies for just fifty cents each! The sweet aroma of warm cookies envelops you right when you enter the moderate shell parking lot. The cute cottage has a giant warming red heart on the outside that really depicts the feeling you get from the great people and calm atmosphere on the inside. If you have younger children you can get cookie kits to decorate. The kit includes an apron, 3-4 cookies and colorful icings to decorate with. A clear glass case sits near the door of the shop. The case holds some of her most prized possessions- sweet sensations and cookie kits. As a former girl scout the cupcake I had to try was the thin mint cupcake. Wrapped in shiny silver foil sat the medium sized cupcake with a swirl of goofy green frosting peaked at the top. Garnished with a crunchy piece of a thin mint cookie. As I unwrapped the indulgence I was surprised to see that the cake was made with two batters: chocolate and vanilla. First, I tried the frosting, it was delicious! Minty fresh with a cool creamy after taste. Next, I took a large bite of the moist cake. The chocolate cake actually has bits of Girl Scout cookie incorporated in it to add texture. The light fluffy batters go together in just the right way to make the cupcake irresistibly scrumptious. The Cookie Cottage is filled with many delectable desserts and great times for all.
