The overall environment is great, very casual, laid back, and relaxing (though I went late at night) which is perfect for having a conversation over drinks or dinner. Went with a buddy on Friday after work for a quick bite. Wow, has this place changed since it was Martini's. Awesome modern vibe and what looks like a great menu. I quite enjoyed my Chicken and Waffles. My buddy thought his Fish 'n Chips was pretty average but, what does he know,...he's an electrician. I don't have a clue what the late-night scene is like in the room but I really enjoyed my dinner experience and would go back in a pinch; next time with a more feminine companion (I hope). read more

The Common is a cool little place just off 109th (across from the legislative area) good selection of beers, interesting menu, and friendly staff. I've enjoyed mostly everything on the menu. Went to The Common on a Saturday night for a late dinner - ended up ordering a pile of appy's instead. The atmosphere was really lovely, it's truly a beautiful place to go...however the food was not very good at all. We had: Calamari - This was the best calamari I've had anywhere. Spicy mixed with sweet fruits and a lovely dip. Would order this again. Truffle Popcorn - A $6 bowl of semi-burnt popcorn. Was not impressed. Antipasto Platter - Everything on the plate was so spicyyyyy. The 2 cheeses on the plate were blue cheese and another 'bitter' type cheese, so we weren't very happy about that. Brie Cheese - This was so disappointing. Brie is my favourite cheese, all warmed up and gooey. The plate of cheese we received were pieces of chopped up, hard brie with soggy strawberries. Not impressed, again. Drinks - We had a LOT of drinks, almost all of the drinks we ordered off the menu tasted very earthy, or like grass. It was not very good. We ended up just ordering plain drinks, not off the menu after the 8 we tried. Service - Server seemed unimpressed to be there, however was a bit friendlier after she got a good tip from the very drunk guy at our table. When we sat down she took our drink order, but walked away even though we were ready to order appetizers saying she'd "be back". We were hungry and I was confused why she couldn't just take both. The general consensus from our table was that The Common is spicy, moldy(cheese) and grassy. I don't think that we'll return. read more

I went there last week for the first time with a couple girlfriends. Love the decor and atmosphere! They have a pretty good selection of beer too. The food was hit & miss. Hit: chicken & waffles - crispy and juicy pieces of chicken. The goat(?) cheese was a nice addition Miss: poutine w/ braised Korean pork. I didn't taste any Korean flavours. It was messy and salty. The broccoli and cheese pasta was soggy and the sauce was incredibly thick. Overall, I'd still go back to this place for a beer. read more

Had dinner here on a Thursday night. It was my First time in this restaurant and I was only here by accident because the Brazilian steakhouse across the street closed at 8.30. It has a funky vibe with music louder than I would prefer - more like a night club atmosphere. The Beer selection was pretty good with mainly craft beers if memory serves. I had a Dirty Bird lager and was pleased with it. The menu was clearly not standard fair. I find it interesting that my BAD review got taken down! How is it that the only reviews on here are all good reviews???? Very interesting if you as me! I will NEVER recommend the Common or eat their again. Especially with the slow service, the 2 hour wait for our meal and let's not forget the Manager telling as that "we don't need to come back"! Why did she say this you wonder? Well our dinner took 2 hours to get to us, no explanation given, it came out wrong and we complained! So I guess that's how they treat some of their guests that are not happy. If I could I would give a 0 star... Oh and it's not like I don't know about being in the F&B industry- I was in it for 12 years!! I know stuff happens, but I also know to let me guests know and explain why their dinner is late! read more

One of my regular spots - a great atmosphere with very friendly staff. A great selection of beers and they know how to make a whiskey sour right. As someone who has to eat gluten free (not by choice), it's great to have a staff that are knowledgeable about gluten free eating and options. Always great options for GF food - my favourite being the Jackson Steak Salad. Truffle popcorn is a must. Always a great ambiance and great music. A great lunch spot with co-workers, and then a good date night spot in the evenings, leading into a fun place to stay for drinks and some dancing at night. Probably one of my top 5 places to go for happy hour in the city. With the happy hour specials they also have different daily features. I am a big fan of the calamari, mussels & fries and $2 off wine (or 1/2 price bottles on Wednesdays). Service is friendly and quick. My husband and I walk often in the downtown area and had heard about the Common so we decided to stop in on a Monday night. We were very pleasantly surprised to find out that the special was chicken and waffles. We started with the fried cheese which is a way better version of the pub style fried cheese sticks. Then of course we had the special. The portions are definitely shareable so we ended up having leftovers to take home. Our server was amazing. Her name is Ebony and she knew her job very well. It's always nice to go to a restaurant where the servers know how to correctly serve wine and provide just the right amount of attention. We knew that we'd be back. The next week to be exact. This time my husband had the burger and I had the short rib and risotto. Again, our food was knock your socks off good. This time our server was Chris and she too, was exceptional. She was very nice to talk with at the end of our meal as well. The Common is now on our list as a favourite restaurant in Edmonton. I went to the common on friday night, expecting an older crowd (late 20s-30s) and a laid back chill vibe which the downtown is supposed to offer. All I saw was young 18 year olds... I was sad to see that downtown/Jasper still doesn't have something for adults that don't go to bars to get plastered or bars that aren't "meat markets". While I like the decor, I left really disappointed. The drinks were good, the flourless chocolate cake was god awful. Plus they tried selling me 'gluten free beer' that was NOT gluten-free. Obviously they did not do their research- not all Estrella beers are g-f, only the estrella dam beer. I was not happy and am thankful my friend was kind enough to drink it or else I would have been seriously ill. I would have returned it, but our server only came by a few times throughout the evening. The server also did not know if anything on the menu was gluten free, so all us celiacs- stay away! The watermelon mojito was good. The music around 10-11pm got so loud we couldn't hear each other talking even though we were sitting next to each other. I am not old at all, but their comes a point where it can be too loud. Also, we had to pay a cover charge, $7! I felt ripped off. Would I recommend or go back, probably not. I've been to The Common a few times now and I would have to say that their strong suit would be the 'after work happy hour' drinks and snacks. A friend & I had the chance to check out The Common Saturday night as another restaurant close by had too long of a wait. I've only ever come to The Common late in the evenings and I was eager to try their dinner menu. We started with the popcorn which was really good. I like how they don't use truffle oil (truffle salt perhaps?) so its a little more mild not so abrasive. For our entrees I chose the salmon which I believe said on the menu it was wasabi crusted.. but it actually came with guacamole (?) some sort of Asian style noodle, asparagus and cauliflower. I found the presentation of both of our entrees a bit.. awkward and the components of my meal didn't really feel like they went together. If I were to come back, I'd stick to a night of drinks and dancing as their DJs are always on point and I've never had a bad night here, I just wouldn't come specifically for dinner. read more

The Common is a place that you should try at all hours of the day. It features great menus for lunch or dinner and has a fantastic atmosphere for drinking, dancing, and conversing at night. The combination of a great restaurant with a truly fantastic nightlife atmosphere makes the Common one of my favourite places to go on any day or at any time. Edmonton has a great pub scene and a few decent clubs but what sets the Common apart is the ability to reach a fairly broad audience. Its combination of music from different musical eras and good selection of drinks makes it attract clientele from all ages and scenes. This contributes to a great atmosphere that is diverse, fun, and contributes to a fun and inclusive culture. As noted in other reviews, the clientele at the Common avoids some of the negative pitfalls of some other establishments and the bar is able to reach across age groups in a way that is somewhat uncommon (no pun intended) in Edmonton. Because I was raving about the multi-faceted awesomeness of the Common I feel like breaking this review down a little bit... Eating The Common features a small but innovative menu with rotating fish, sandwich, and soup options as well as some really great twists on pub favourites. Their short rib poutine, kale caesar salad, and honey basil grilled cheese are all examples of fun and delicious twists on regular pub fare. The truffle popcorn is an absolute must and I'm slowly making my way through what is a plethora of delicious starters and sharing items. The presentation of each dish is really great as well, something that is pretty unique for a pub, and it is quite apparent that presentation, design, and atmosphere are important parts of the culture of the Common. Vegetarians won't find a whole lot of options on the Common's menu but their salads, starters, and sandwiches provide a few options that stress quality over quantity. Both their vegetable hoagie and their basil honey grilled cheese are superb options that feature one of my favourite things in the world- brie cheese. Drinking The drink menu is fairly extensive with a large array of beers, wines, and classic cocktails. They have about a dozen beers on tap and a large selection of bottles. They also have some classic cocktails and can make a pretty good old fashioned which suits the atmosphere of the place and is always nice to see on a menu. Whatever your drink of choice is, the Common will be able to accommodate your tastes with fairly friendly servers and staff. Dancing The music at the Common makes it one of the most fun places to go out dancing. The type of music they play varies from night to night but you can usually find a great mix of classic hits, pop, disco, funk, and a little bit of electro too. There honestly isn't a bad night to go dancing but their Mod nights are really the standouts. The dance floor is fairly small but it's usually packed with fun, friendly people who are usually fairly respectful and are just out to have a good time. On a totally anecdotal note, from my personal experience the clientele at the Common is also incredibly attractive which makes me wonder why they let ME in at all. read more

I was really looking forward to The Common. I'd heard so many good things from so many people, but I was disappointed with the service and the food. The space is very nice, and the vibe is really good, but I just didn't enjoy anything I ate. And neither did any of my seven friends who were with me. My sister and I started with the pork and endive boats. While the pork was quite good, it was served with a garlic caramel confit. I don't think garlic and caramel would or should ever work together. For $16, we got about eight soggy endive leaves with little nuggets of pork--maybe three ounces of meat. A little overpriced. I had the steak salad. The steak was quite good. Well cooked and well seasoned. But it came with grilled romaine lettuce. The lettuce was quite soggy and there were probably only about six leaves. A number of people ordered the salmon and potato. Everyone commented that the salmon was very well cooked and seasoned, but there wasn't very much food on the plate. A small piece of salmon, a small piece of potato, and about six slices of pickled carrots. Other people in my party ordered the summer pasta. Everyone commented that they were far too many herbs in the dish. The portion was very small, and there was very little sauce. One of my friends ordered the corned beef. She said the beef itself was quite good, but the accompanying side dishes were all way too vinegary. As for the service, we were a group of eight, which I know can be annoying for servers. Our server did not do a very good job of hiding the fact that she didn't seem happy to be serving our table; she seemed annoyed but also depressed. Perhaps she was having a bad day. But she was not overly friendly and forgot to serve someone their appetizer. I know the common regularly updates and changes its menu, so perhaps we just hit it at a time when the food wasn't at its best. But overall I was quite disappointed with what is supposed to be one of the best restaurants in Edmonton. I found the food to be overly complicated and trying to hard to bring together ingredients that don't really seem to work together, like peach and celery in a dessert. There's a lot to be said for simple food that allows the ingredients to take centre stage. Sometimes restaurants try a little too hard to be unique or to surprise people. It would take a fair bit of convincing for me to go again. read more

Disappointing. I saw the pictures and read the menu before going and was very excited to go. In terms of appraisers the poutine is amazing and the fondue is pretty good. I ordered the chicken and waffles and it was quite overwhelming. It came with creme fresh and apple sauce and if you put them on it completely overpowered everything else. And if you didn't put them on then it didn't really taste like a lot. The service was not good and it took us 35 minutes to get drink orders done and another 40 after our dinner for the server to come back. I really like The Common in its new location. There are a few detractors that need to be acknowledged. I'm not into how they charge cover every single night that they are open. I can see charging for special events but all the time feels like a bit much. It also irritates me that they make people stand in line even though the bar is not nearly full. I feel like its an attempt to portray themselves as a hip, exclusive option worth the price of cover. I do really like to go to MOD club there, and that feels like a justifiable reason to pay the $7 entry fee. I also appreciate that the new location has a coat check. Inside the bar is a mix of restaurant and swanky nightclub. There's quite a bit more sitting, dancing and standing room than the old location so that's a bonus. I feel like they do a good job of having the music volume at a level that encourages dancing but you can still talk to each other. I still haven't had food there, but have heard good things. As mentioned, there are a few irritants associated with The Common but, all in all, it's a pretty good Jasper-adjacent nightlife option. read more

I have been here a handful of times and always enjoyed it but recently went for Hip Hop Brunch. The menu (and music) was awesome! Went with a few friends so we picked 4 meals off the menu and all shared. Everything was good and drinks were made well. Only downside to this specific time was the service. We ate here about a month ago but didn't review, I can't stop thinking about how bad the food was. The fish from the fish and chips was mushy and had a mold taste. The truffle pasta was a soggy disgusting mess with the thick noodles being extremely over cooked and tasteless, it did not have any truffle flavor at all. They did take the pasta dish off the bill but I am still choked about paying at all. Customers work hard for their money and this was practically robbery. We will never return and have told a lot of friends and family. read more

I ate lunch there on October 13, 2017 and the service was not great (if you rate it on based on service with a smile). She also pre-emptively gave us the bill at the end without us asking for it. I feel like the employee wanted to be somewhere else (making us feel like maybe we should be somewhere else as well). I have been going there for about 3 years now and I noticed that little if nothing has changed on the menu in that time. I feel like they can spunk it up a lot but they don't seem to think its necessary. Unfortunately for customers to return it is nice to see a change from time to time. Overall I think the place started off as hip 3 years ago and is slowly fading. There seems to be a lack of pride in the service and a lack of pride in the food options. Hopefully it will change soon as I don't feel like going there in the immediate future unless I am held ransom. I would much rather go somewhere a few blocks away who does it better. Went to The Common on Tuesday night this week and I have to say I really didn't dig it. Walking in the atmosphere was nice, cool decor, lower lighting. Was seated with a couple of friends. One server started with our drink orders and I got a Kelowna beer from the seasonal drink part of the menu. That beer was the best part of the dining experience. Our server then left our table, and another came in and introduced herself as our new server. I thought shift change- but nope- the first server continued waiting on other tables. Odd. Anyways. Got the chicken and waffles. The grilled pear accompaniment was one pear cut in half, the chicken looked like nuggets but was a strange combination of mostly dark leg meat. Not the best choice when you are paying $17.00 for a meal. Flavour lacked. The waffles were thin, flat, and a bit too much on the salty side. The sauce was non existent- the only saving grace was the delicious bacon bits in the waffles. Overall I was very disappointed with the food quality. A sad experience. I hope to save others as I expected a lot more. read more
