The venue is cool and they have had good comedians. I took off 1 star because I saw 2 charges on my card for my 2 drink per table purchase. Be aware that you can be charged for purchase and there will be an additional charge put on your card for the same amount. Even though the additional charge is not an authorized charge and may fall off, the money was still taken out of my account and there's nothing the bank or the venue can do while the charge still shows pending on the account. Although they may not keep the money, you should be aware that this happened when I made a purchase there and the venue is aware that the system does this. read more

We had a good time at The Comedy Store in La Jolla. Like most comedy clubs, it's a mix, some comedians were really solid and had us laughing, while others clearly thought they were funnier than they were. That's just part of the experience. The atmosphere was good overall. Service came off a little rude at times, but honestly that's kind of expected in these types of venues, so it didn't ruin anything. They do take your phones, which might catch some people off guard, but it wasn't a big deal for us. I ended up really loving this place. I saw Drew Lynch here on Friday Honestly hes such a great comedian!. Has become one of my favorites. Picked good openers as well. So when you arrive you have to put your phone in a pocket slip its locked. So you can't be on your phone etc during the show. You have to step out if you need to take a call.I do like that policy with the no phones out during the show. I noticed immediately how the entire crowd before the show started chatting amongst one another it was refreshing. Not something you see much of anymore because we are all glued to our phones. So I hope they keep that rule. The drinks were good. Service was good. As soon as they open they give you a complete rundown of the rules. Which is great. They manage the lines well. They don't have a food menu. Some popcorn at most I believe. I only got drinks. FYI: DO NOT PARK AT PAVILIONS THEY WILL TOW YOU!! Take a lyft/uber or find street parking. This venue is "first come, first serve" so if you get there early enough, you can potentially get seated around the stage, and most often get picked on by the comedian (some people like that). Ive been to this Comedy Store on 2 occasions - open mic and for Godfrey. 2 completely different occasions. Open mic has more of a hit or miss lineup while Godfrey was literally a house full of laughs. There is a 2 drink minimum but it does not have to be alcohol. They also offer alternative drinks like soda, tea, and coffee. They have limited food selection. Last night, they had $5 popcorn. So just a recommendation to eat somewhere prior. This particular comedy store is unlike the one in LA. Definitely smaller. Depends on how packed the venue is, just be aware you might not have a lot of space. The Audience was asked prior to the show not to "heckle" the comedians. I was having a great time laughing and verbally agreeing with the comedian. We have been to this location and to Hollywoods location. We prefer La Jolla. It is small, but in a nice area. We recently saw Chris Porter. He is hilarious! We've never seen a bad comedian at the Comedy Store. The ticket prices are reasonable. My only complaint is they take your phone and lock it up in a baggy. Okay, so it's not exactly fair to judge a comedy venue based on the strength of any given comedian. In my specific case, I was gifted tickets to Dustin Nickerson. Dustin was hilarious and I spent the evening laughing, as did my companions. But were I to give Comedy Store five stars based on Dustin's performance ... well, that would be like me giving five starts to an airline because Hawaii has good weather. So how does one rate this place? I'll compare it to other comedy venues. In that respect, it's not great. I appreciate the history of the place. But I don't think that exactly gives them a pass. The interior is pure 70's lounge chaos. Tables are scattered wherever. People had to crawl over each other to move around. Chairs are not comfortable. It's also in La Jolla. Parking is bad. But at least you're in La Jolla. We parked many black away where we dined prior to the show. Which brings me to the next point. Dine before the show. The food is limited to popcorn. Oh ... the popcorn is otherworldly. Wild to say this, but it's better than 95% of all popcorn I've ever tasted. So bravo. Drinks are basic, no frills and served reasonably fast. They are served efficiently by staff that probably has too many people to serve per show. In contrast to the other comedy venues I've attended (Improve and American Comedy Club), this was overall the least comfortable throwback style experience. It's fine for what it is if you want to see a specific act. But don't come here expecting to eat. But you can definitely drink and be merry. read more

This place is very intimate. Conveniently location near Mission Beach, this comedy club features artists from all over the country. This place is Equip with a bar and popcorn machine. But the only downside id say this place has is there's no food menu items. Not even appetizers or snacks. Only popcorn That's the first comedy club I've been to without food. It was very difficult to hear the show. Additionally, we were forced to give up our cell phones because talking on the phone can disrupt the show. How does that make sense if the servers are allowed to have full on conversations right next to the people who want to enjoy the show. I hope management will address this issue. read more

This venue typically has a pretty solid line up of comedians and very friendly staff! We've been to a couple shows and the comedy is always great. The two drink minimum is kind of a bummer since the drinks are a bit expensive and the cocktails aren't exactly "craft", I typically get a bourbon on the rocks because both the espresso martini and the margarita were both a bit disappointing. Parking is pretty tough but if you get there early enough you can typically find a spot nearby within 5-10 minutes of looking. read more

Comedian headliners aside, the people from the security guard to servers to the two who seat you in were not friendly and were pushy throughout the show. I was surprised that only popcorn can be ordered for food and the quality was horrendous at that. Absolutely stale with an aftertaste of old oil. Requiring a two drink minimum is absurd to how low quality the comedians are. The chairs were so uncomfortable as well, we ended up getting up and leaving. This place is intimate but I wouldn't go back given the s@&! popcorn served, no appetizers and mandating more than 1 drink. Hard pass for mediocre comedy. read more

This place is serious awful. Small, with a very odd seating arrangement that forces some couples apart whilst simultaneously having people laugh in your ear from behind. The decor is 1974: black painted wood paneling. Bathrooms are ancient and smelling. Getting in takes a while because they force you to put your phone in a case. Getting out is no better. There is no spotlight on the performer, just small lights and the giant red neon sign behind the performer makes it hard to see them. VERY uncomfortable banquet chairs from the 80's seemingly. Employee who is answer the phone now Sept 3 at 630pm is in the wrong business. I bought tickets flying down from San Jose to see a show and because of family obligations cannot make it. I am calling well in advance for a refund or credit to another show. The West Hollywood location has never given me issues when I fly down. Whatever the policy is the person answering the phone is a complete asshole, rude and condescending. Rather than being nice or thinking of a solutions he has attitude. The best part about the comedy store...TUMUA! Freaking hilarious and an absolute riot. Such a great show. The venue itself is just fine. You can purchase VIP or regular general admission tickets. For the majority of GA tickets, you get placed in seats according to when you line up. So the earlier you're there, the closer to the front you'll be. To be honest, the venue is small and it almost seems better to be closer to the back where there's more space. We got placed in these awkward seats on the side so turning towards the front was tough. It was really tight and I wasn't able to sit close to my party because of the angle. There is a two drink minimum and drink prices aren't terrible. They hustle with the drinks to make sure you got them in to the short time frame of the show. While the venue has its quirks, the comedy is unbeatable and such a great spot to enjoy an evening of laughs. read more

I love The Comedy Store! It is an iconic venue in San Diego. I used to go pretty regularly but hadn't been in years until this year (2023) when I attended Whitney Cummings, Michael Yo, and Pauly Shores shows. It was great to see that it hadn't changed a bit. The venue is still this neighbourhood hot spot that brings in top talent old and new. If you haven't been know that a queue forms before doors open. Seating is first come first served and based on the size of your party where you are seated. There are no bad seats in the house. There is no food served at The Comedy Store but they do sell fantastic popcorn and have a full bar and make pretty good cocktails. If you're looking for a low key night out or a date night this is a great choice. Keep up the good work, Comedy Store! read more

Comedy shows are my all time favorite pastime. I've been to American Comedy Co., big venues in LA like the Laugh Factory, Improv, Hollywood Comedy store, Wilshire theater and even small venues like bar lubitsch. Comedy Store in La Jolla is my favorite spot of them all. Service is on par with any other comedy club. Drinks are reasonably priced. I love the size, the vibe and that it's close to great restaurants to go to before shoes. The thai restaurant, AROI, behind the comedy store is a great place to grab a bit before. La Jolla is a pretty sleepy town after 9 so there aren't many places to grab a drink after. Comedy store can get a bit cold, especially if you are sitting under an air vent so even if it's hot outside, I'd definitely always bring a jacket. If you don't want to get made fun of, don't sit up front. read more

Went out May 27 to see comedian Ali Siddiq never been to a comedy club so I didn't know what to expect but this is not for me. My wife and I bought the VIP tickets and I didn't feel VIP at all I really don't know what the VIP got me other then being crammed in like sardines. I attended the Ryan Davis comedy show tonight. He was amazing and our server did the best she could with all the drink orders. The 1 star is for the "bouncer" they had. I'll just tell the story and let you decide for yourself. Ryan Davis was very engaging and was communicating with the audience. My group shouted out a couple of comments and he asked us follow-up questions. We had a great back-and-forth, which is standard for comedy shows. However, the security guy eventually came up to our table and scolded us, accusing us of heckling the comedian. When I questioned him, he said he was very clear about "the rules" when we came in. I asked him, "So, if the comedian asks us a question, we're not allowed to answer!?" His response, "If he asks you specifically, you may answer the question. But if he asks the audience in general, that's a rhetorical question and you're not allowed to answer." I challenged that and he responded with something like, "Comedy is silent." Ummm...Huh??? I called the manager to clarity their policy. He said some comedians don't like it when people comment and then they get mad at security for not intervening. Come on, folks, this is a comedy club and if you're going to alienate your patrons, why even bother? I will not be going back to this venue anytime soon, especially after reading all the other reviews that mention a "rude employee". This leads me to believe that it's either the same employee my group encountered or this establishment does not hire well. Either way, I would suggest to management to have more extensive training for your security so that they can read the room and understand the nuances of comedy. Additionally, take some time to have an in-depth conversation with your comedians to find out what they are comfortable accepting in terms of audience participation. Then communicate this to your staff so that each show caters to the style and creativity of each comedian. Case in point, I spoke with Ryan Davis after the show and told him that we got in trouble for talking to him. He said he wished they hadn't done that and then he needed to speak with them. That shouldn't be his responsibility. He is the talent and it's up to the Comedy Store management to clarify those details with each performer so they can put on their best show. One final suggestion: for the love of God, train your employees to understand the actual definition of "heckling". read more
