Beautiful restored rich person home in the historic Hill Section of Scranton. We were here to throw a surprise party for my father-in-law and had a blast. Food and service were very good and the owner was always there to check in on the party and make sure everything was going well. The most impressive element is probably the space itself, with a gorgeous parlor (baby grand piano and all) painted turquoise, cathedral vaulted ceilings, and various moldings and accents. That is about all I remember from before I hit the open bar, which, together with the cocktaik hour, were just awesome. read more

Over the past 3+ years, proprietors Joshua Mast and Paul Blackledge have lovingly restored this once-decrepit mansion into a beautiful event space and small boutique hotel/bed & breakfast. Located steps from the University of Scranton on the main drag of Mulberry Street, The Colonnade's meeting/reception rooms are beautiful as is the suite I stayed in for two nights. The original structure was built in the 1870's and it looks like much was done to preserve as much of the original woodwork, fireplaces and tile work as possible. High ceilings, curved walls, beautiful chandeliers...Joshua and Paul have returned the property to its former grandeur, yet have decorated the space with whimsy. In the Music Room, featuring an antique grand piano that came with the property, the blue walls are covered with lots of fun art work. My suite featured a separate sitting room, beautifully tiled bathroom and a separate bedroom with a king-sized bed with soft, luxurious bedding. Flat screen TV, free wifi and continental breakfast also come with the room. Several family members in town have attended functions from private baby showers to special holiday brunches at the Colonnade and report that the food and festivities were wonderful. There is parking in the back, and be forewarned - the property is off busy Mulberry Street - so for those not used to city noise should be prepared. It can be noisy in the early morning. So, while I have family I can stay with next time I'm in town, I will probably opt for staying at the Colonnade again. read more

I came here for a company-sponsored holiday party. As what others have mentioned, this place is beautiful with elegant decorations and a spacious dining room. After parking on the STREET, I walked in with some of my other co-workers. There, I was greeted by the hostess and escorted to the coat check desk to store my coat. The guy there, pleasantly stored my coat and gave me a card to present when I come back to leave. This company-sponsored holiday party consisted of complimentary beer, wine, sodas, and appetizers. There were no desserts at all. Mixed drinks were available for an additional $10, which I didn't partake in at all. The person at the bar had a very nice attitude when he served myself and everyone else. I had a bottle of Heineken Light, and went with the Sprite for the rest of the night. The appetizers were served on tables and by various servers. On the tables were the classic crackers with cheese, cured meat, and various veggie sticks. Everything tasted fresh. My salty snack and vegetable cravings were fulfilled from this. Various friendly servers came out with different appetizers for us to grab. They were all served hot and fresh. 1st was a Puff pastry pinwheel with prosciutto, gruyere, and basil. This tasted crispy, and anything with prosciutto is a plus in my book. Next was the Fried Ravioli with Marinara dipping sauce. This contained a delicious cheese filling, and the very-well seasoned marinara sauce added extra flavor to the excellent taste sensation. After that was the Cranberry Glazed Meatball. That was a unique, tasty, & fruity combination! After that were the Bite Size Macaroni & Cheese Balls. The coating was crispy, and the filling inside was steaming hot and gooey. Nothing to hate here, especially if you like macaroni and cheese! After that was the Mini Yukon Gold Potato Pancake with a crispy, flaky coating. This was okay, but a little over fried. Lastly were the Buffalo Chicken Bites with Blue Cheese dipping sauce. I didn't care about the Blue Cheese, but the Buffalo Chicken had the PERFECT amount of spiciness and flavor with each bite. These apps came around multiple times throughout our experience. I ate so much of these apps that there was no need for me to cook at home that night. The place itself is right on US-11, which is across from the University Of Scranton area. But the parking, however is around the various side streets with meters. They told me they have a private lot available, but with the rush hour traffic and numerous signs. myself & other colleagues couldn't even find it. Thankfully, meter parking is free in the evening hours. For an elegant place like this, I thought they would make parking very easy. (-1 Star) Service was excellent throughout our night. Joshua Mast, one of the partners of The Colonnade has flunked customer service 101. My wife and I had my daughters Sweet 16 birthday party here. DO NOT DO YOUR EVENT HERE IF YOU HAVE TO WORK WITH JOSH. Here's the breakdown of the good and bad: Good: -Food was tasty -Facility is beautiful -Staff was pleasant -Attendant at door was a nice touch Negative: -One of the two bathroom doors did not lock, making for some embarrassing situations -Food was lukewarm -There was not enough food -When a family member with gluten allergies filled a plate with five pieces of sushi Josh, the owner asked if she was going to leave any for the family. He then asked her to put some of the food back!!!! He denies the later comment but it was witnessed by more than one person. I was absolutely appalled that anyone, let alone the owner would have the nerve to actually say this to a guest. When under any pressure Josh makes the situation worse by refusing to admit fault and wanting to blame anyone else and then storm off. read more

I just returned home after a one night stay in The Colonnade. I have to say I was extremely impressed with the property as well as the service. I arrived in the early afternoon, and was greeted by the house manager who showed me too my room. The room itself was absolutely gorgeous. Beautifully decorated with an honor bar. Let me tell you, that chilled bottle of wine was a welcome sight on a warm summer day. They owners Joshua and Paul could not have been kinder. They ensured that everything was attended to, including taking me to the bus station when i was running late and was worried about getting a cab. Breakfast fast modest but frankly I don't book a property for the food. I book for the room and the service. Both were exemplary. I will definitely be back. read more

I watched this building deteriorate for many years, fully expecting a wrecking ball to one day put it out of its misery. It saddens me to watch so many perfectly adaptable historic structures demolished to make way for soulless buildings lacking a true sense of place. To my surprise and delight, the property now known as The Colonnade never met that fate thanks to an extraordinary pair of visionaries. Their renovation - truly an enormous undertaking - was extremely well done. There is wholly evident passion and skill in every preserved nook and cranny, and a cursory look at the building in its previous state would indicate that it was in need of serious tender loving care. The contribution that this revitalized property makes to not only the downtown area, but the region as a whole is invaluable. My experience with The Colonnade is limited to Thanksgiving dinner. I'm frankly surprised I was able to convince my family to go out for a holiday, but given the circumstances it was the best option for us; The Colonnade had recently opened and it was a prime opportunity to check it out. Dinner - served as a four course prix fixe with several options - was fantastic. I had become accustomed to annually avoiding a painfully traditional herbed stuffing (sorry, mom!), so the cornbread and bacon stuffing served here was a refreshingly salty-sweet departure. Rounding out the mainstays of - among others - turkey, sweet potatoes and green beans were a delightful pumpkin bisque and a quartet of personal-sized autumnal themed desserts. The environment is one of understated class and sophistication, a delicate balance of the building's heritage and modern flair. It is neither stuffy nor minimalist. Given the need, I would not hesitate to book an event here, as I feel this is one of, if not the finest small/medium size venue in the area. I'd also certainly return for one of their open events, which are generally aligned with holidays. Although I cannot speak to the quality of the accommodations, I would venture to guess that they are just as stunning as the rest of the property (check out the photos here and on their website). read more

We travel a lot and this was our BEST Hotel/BnB experience to date. This restored home is stunning, the furniture is comfortable and being upstairs from the Wedding Reception was delightful. The experience begins with free parking, seques to a suite that is more elegant and gracious than anticipated, embraces a comfortable night's sleep, recharges with a divine continental breakfast and is centered on two campuses, the Library, many beautiful churches and superior restaurants, all within walking distance. We enjoyed Scranton and loved the Colonnade. The Host and his Staff, (especially the adorable LaLa), elevated our weekend. read more

A college reconnaissance trip to The University of Scranton brought my wife and daughter to this very elegant totally restored turn of the century mansion. They report a very very nice suite . The pictures they sent me match the 360 degree panoramic photos you can see on their web site. The service they reported was also wonderful. Very nicely done gentlemen ! These are clearly the best rooms available in Scranton. Oddly I do not recall seeing the Colonnade mentioned in the University of Scrantons literature, they mention several other local and much larger establishments, that both had mixed reviews including 1 of them being haunted. My daughter being averse to a haunted hotel was very pleased with the Colonnade. I strongly suspect that the university saves this place for visiting dignitaries and thus that's why they keep its existence quiet. And as a surprise the suite was very reasonably priced. I booked the room for this trip and the owners have contracted with a 3rd party to arrange the room bookings, so there might be a lag of a few hours between when you ask for a room and you here back with a confirmation, so don't wait till the last minute. read more

We had our wedding at The Colonnade--so this goes out to anyone wanting to book for a large event. It is a unique venue, which attracted me to it from the beginning. The house itself is beautiful. The waiting staff is always dressed professionally and willing to make your experience a good one. We had Valentine's Day dinner here and the food was delicious. The food was good at our wedding as well. The problem really came through in the planning process. First off, we had 130 people at this venue. They advertise to have a max of 200. Please do not believe this. They say max 120 in the dining area, this is also not true. If you are to consider this for a wedding your guest list should be less than 100. 80 or less would probably fit best. Next, Josh (one of the owners and wedding planners) is a yes man. He will tell you he will do this and that, and you will think he is on the same page as you. However, I found this to be the farthest from the truth. From our tasting to the day of, there were details missing. Maybe it was just a busy time, maybe they had too many bookings between their other venue and this one, but either way, my wishes were not followed through with. For example- the tent was not decorated with the decorations that I left. There were no high top tables as agreed on and he charged $250 for a "dance floor" that could literally fit two couples. Don't purchase this. Just use the cement floor that is available. On the day of the wedding reception, Josh was no where to be found, even though I was told he would be there. There was a house assistant, but she had no itinerary for the day and was constantly asking me questions throughout the night on when to do what. It was ridiculous because this was previously decided and planned weeks beforehand. If Josh wasn't going to be there, he should have passed on this information to her. In the end, things happened out of order and in the wrong spot. We didn't get an official cake cutting and our introductions were cut off by the packed dining room area. Both mistakes could have been easily avoided if the head of house knew what the timeline was. On the positive side: Our guests told us the app's were delicious and the drinks were perfect. Beware- if you do book with The Colonnade, they also made mistakes with our bill. Double check their work and make the last payment after the reception if possible. read more

Each time I was treated to fabulous food, delicious continental breakfasts, and sophisticated accomodations!
