I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed The Collective before now. I have been a customer for almost 2 years. Charles has primarily been my stylist and I am in love with everything about his atheistic and approach. Nando has done my hair a couple of times as well & he is so great. The salon is open air and friendly. Music and atmosphere are so pleasant & relaxing. The location is wonderful and all the stylists do work their clients rave about. There is not a pressure to buy things. Only relaxation. I highly recommended this salon if you are looking for your "person" to do your hair. Muah. read more

This was such a great place to get my first proper haircut since Covid. The place is really relaxing with a large open garage door so I felt really good about ventilation and exposure. Fernando was my stylist and he made me feel really welcome and provided the best ever scalp massage. I would come back just for a wash and head massage. He listened well to what I wanted and offered really thoughtful suggestions. The place does all of the little things that make you feel appreciated as a customer. I followed Christina from Kelly Cardenas Salon to here at The Collective and I was getting the same amazing experience here as I was getting there. Everyone is super friendly and has really good vibes and they make sure you're comfortable from the second that you walk in. When Christina was ready I was ushered into the bathroom so I could put on a robe and then put my jacket and bag in the cubby in the closet. This time was the first time that I wanted to donate my hair and they have all the supplies needed to do so. I made a note when I booked my appointment that I wanted to donate it, and they had the rubber bands and bags needed to collect all the hair. She made sure that I was getting a comfortable length for myself since it was such a drastic change to my hair. Once we got the general length down, we went to the sinks in the corner where she shampooed my hair and gave me a brief head and neck massage. Definitely my favorite part of getting my hair cut. Since I've been coming to Christina a couple times by now, she knew what I liked and preferred for my hair, but if it's your first time getting a cut here, I recommend bringing in a few pictures to show what you're looking for since it might be hard to describe in just words. For years before I found Christina I've been jumping from salon to salon trying to find someone who knows how to handle my super thick hair. After finding her a couple years ago I haven't been to anyone else. She's super professional and knows exactly what my hair needs. I'll be sticking around for her! read more

I found him after 2-3 weeks of extensive research on stylists and salons in the San Diego area, I don't let just anyone touch my hair, I am VERY particular. The first time I went in I needed a color correction. A previously high rated stylist turned my black hair orange somehow, Charles came to my rescue and made my hair beautiful once again! Every time​ I go and see Charles I let him have free-range with my hair because​ I know that at the end of the ​appointment​​ it will look AMAZING! Secondly,​ the salon is beautiful, they really added ​a ​nice comfortable yet modern touch. I recently moved to North County and was looking for a new stylist. I will keep looking. Three major issues: I expect my stylist to listen to me. I said I would like an inch taken off with layers that blend (no shelf) nicely. I left with a little over 2 inches having been taken off and a lot of choppy layers that do not blend well. The stylist was so rough with my scalp during the wash, brush and blow dry. My neck was sore later that day and into the next day. If I'm paying for a salon visit, it should feel like I'm getting the best treatment, not like I'm a five year old getting my hair brushed after running around in the wind all day. Lastly, I was hopeful after learning that the salon used gluten free products however the smell from the shampoo, conditioner and post styling product was awful! So strong, I had to wash my hair when I got home, twice. I was sick the whole next day from the smell. I tried so many things to get rid of the smell but it stuck around until about two weeks later. Update: Although I will not be going back to the salon, it is mainly due to the stylist and not the owner or salon. The owner was very accommodating and professional in handling this matter. So I changed the stars to reflect that. read more

I found this place on a yelp search after my hair stylist moved states. It's always a bit scary finding a new place so I put it off longer than I should have. Charles did my cut and highlights. I have always just colored my own hair at home. (As a guy I didn't feel the need to take the extra step of going in) but it's my birthday abs I wanted to feel like I treated myself. Wow. What a difference. Fernando colored my hair and toned it and I have never had more compliments on it! It was worth it completely! I've been coming to see Amanda for the past few years, I went to her on a whim and man am I thankful I did! She's brought my hair back from the brink of total disaster and I trust her implicitly. I've never gotten a bad cut/color from her! She's great at following directions and making the cut I want fit not only my face but my personality. She herself has had long and short hair so she understands the struggles of both and what makes either look great, not only in the short term but when it's grown out (I'm not great about coming in for trims). She's also been extremely understanding and caring regarding my disabilities, I have an implanted medical device and she always remembers that a full head and shoulder massage will be painful for me and avoids what hurts me. The best hairdresser I've ever been to; I'm sticking with her until she retires! The shop itself is beautiful and very well put together. It's so comfortable and everyone says hello and remembers my name every time I come in, despite my shoddy upkeep schedule (my own fault, ha!).
