I'm a little torn between 3 and 4 stars but I'll err on the side of caution because I may have come on an off day. Lovely atmosphere and design, good coffee, and efficient service. All the makings of something really good. But booo-RING. I just wanted to drink my coffee and get out. There were, like, five middle-aged men tapping away on their MacBooks. No one was smiling or chatting. Not even the employees. I guess it would be a great place to come if I wanted to read the paper or be completely silent but not if I wanted to feel connected to my fellow human beings or if I were looking to feel energized. I had high hopes walking into this coffee shop, seeing as though 50% of my days are spent studying with coffee in one hand and a book in the other. So I love finding new places! With that being said, I was sooo hopeful...but hopes were dashed when I received a cup of hot chocolate that tasted burnt. How does a place do hot chocolate wrong??? On top of that, the bread that I ordered (which was grossly overpriced) was disgustingly dry. Ewww! Burnt hot chocolate and a gross snack. Disappointing! Also, not the best place to go if you're looking to have a conversation with friends. This is better suited for those going solo to study or work. Oh, the one upside were the servers. I think I saw a mention of this place in GQ or Details a few months back and was surprised to see that The Coffee Studio was in my neighborhood! I'm not much of a coffee snob and I'll admit, I'm somebody who just stops at the Starbucks next door to get my caffeine fix. I stopped into The Coffee Studio to close out a nice night out with a friend. It was around 8:15PM and I realized that the Studio closed at 9. A bit of a bummer, but nothing bad. I didn't event end up choosing coffee as my beverage as I didn't want a caffeine zinger that late and I don't believe in decaf coffee. So I went ahead with green tea. Yes, I know there's caffeine in that too, but tea tends to calm me down instead of allowing me to climb on the ceilings. With that said, The Coffee Studio is topnotch enjoyable. It's a very serene and calming setting. I'm out of college, but if I still had a reason to whip out my laptop, I would love to get work done here. Awesome and calming location. Only bummer was that it wasn't open any later to enjoy the scene. read more

Free wi-fi. Amazing tea and coffee service. They are open really early and stay open until 9pm usually. After 5pm the crowd dies a little to get sitting. During the day and especially weekends it is quite crowded. The Coffee Studio has a very laid back, relaxed environment, and they brew Intelligenic coffee like no one's business. I recommend you try a coffee and quiche/coffee. It will make your tummy joyful. Some of the sitting can get you a little crammed, but make a friend and stay awhile. read more

The decor and atmosphere make this place for me. Pretty minimalist with light wood accents. Lots of equally stylish comfy chairs and table space which make it great for working or just chilling. Unfortunately you get internet cards of one hour each which is kind of inconvenient. But overall this place is a winner. read more

I really love studying in this place. While it could be a bit better lit in the back, it has a generally open, fresh feeling--not dark and moody like most of the hipster coffeeshops in this city. The espresso is fantastic, with wonderful crema. The baristas have been trained to perfection. Two minor critiques: 1) They play the exact same music there every single day. Some variety would be nice! And 2) Aside from the parfaits, there don't seem to be any other healthy food options. read more

This place gets super crowded on the weekends, both inside and out on their makeshift patio, but it's an excellent place to plop down and work or study. There's one free hour of WiFi that you get with a code from the baristas, probably to discourage all of us from living there. (I would definitely consider living there if I could.) The coffee and tea selection is excellent. They serve Intelligentsia coffee, which is double-roasted and bold-flavored (similar to Starbucks' coffee). . Their pastries are to-die for. As one would expect, any place that calls itself The Coffee Studio takes its coffee seriously. Actually, they take all their products seriously - the iced tea is crisp and crystal clear and the cookies seem designed to accompany the coffee. They serve Black Cat Espresso by Intelligensia, which is my favorite roast in the city (sorry Metropolis). They have WiFi, but it is not free (you only get 1 hour and you must purchase something - I don't know how other reviewers call this "free".) Minus 1 star for the limited seating, especially for groups larger than 2. In this regard I think your popularity is your weakness. read more

I love this place; the coffee is superb, the baristas are friendly (but not overly so), and if I can get a seat it's a great place to work. I'm not going back 'til it gets warm again, though. Please, please please turn the heating on! The seats are like blocks of ice, the brick walls and huge windows radiate cold, and it took about an hour for my fingers to unfreeze after I got home. The coffee here is excellent, as is the service. The prices are as to be expected for an upscale coffee shop, and the atmosphere is ultra-contemporary and a bit cold, to be honest. I prefer going here in warmer weather, as there are a few outdoor tables. I'd be more than happy to go back here any time, but there's not much that would make me want to stay. I was in A-ville and so happened to cross The Coffee Studio this morning. Having recalled the name from none other than Yelp, I decided I at the very least could get a Chai to go. The cafe is very fresh and swanky in terms of decor and ambiance. A snob like myself will blend in perfectly! Seemed quiet and like a good place to read or just fiddle away time on a laptop. Wi-fi available, of course. My Chai was good and fairly priced. Interestingly, my drink was handed to me hot but drinkable from the get-go. Usually coffee joints hand me my drink boiling hot so I can burn the inside of my mouth and not be able to taste anything for a week. I was happy and surprised my drink came at the perfect temperature and I didn't have to make an ass out of myself by yelling profanities for being an impatient drinker. If I were in the area I'd make this place my 'usual' spot. But I'll have to burn my mouth at other coffee houses until they open up next door. read more

Such a wonderful local cafe! I don't even drink coffee, and generally on principle avoid paying for beverages I can easily make at home. However, I can't stop telling my friends about this place, and find myself trying to come up with excuses to chill out here. It's within walking distance of both my apartment and my mechanic, so I came on a cold, drizzly morning while I was waiting on my car. There weren't too many people, and the inside was so inviting. I wouldn't describe it as "cozy", but it feels like how I'd want my living room to be if I had one. There are a few comfy chairs to relax in, and some games and reading material. Great coffee shop with a focus on COFFEE! Serving up intelligentsia with finesse, the baristas know what they're doing. The atmosphere is very chill, with wooden tables, wood and brick on the walls, a great place to relax with a book or laptop and get some work done. The baristas are very friendly, too! Oh man. This place is my new guilty pleasure. Cortado. Holy crap that's good!! The first time I got one, I was walking home from work. It's a 1 1/2 hour walk and they are at about the halfway point. So I stopped to get myself a treat. I got a decaf cortado, cause if I have caffeine that late in the day, well, it's just not pretty. It was amazing. Perfect. Just what espresso is supposed to taste like. And the cortado is, to me, the absolute perfect coffee drink. Can you open a branch closer to my house please? No wait. The walk is good for me. Just had a great coffee au lait at The Coffee Studio. Daughter and I went for breakfast on a wedding errand and crafting weekend. We each had a spinach and cheese croissant and our coffees. The barista asked if it would be alright if we waited to have our croissants toasted, as the oven had pizzas in it, with the heat cranked up and it would scorch the croissants. So this is one of my fav places to get work done. The interior is great and it seems they have considered various modes for coming to a coffee shop - a lounge area for talking/reading, individual tables with outlets for working, and a large dining-room style table for group meetings. Great zen modern feel and consistently friendly staff who seem to know the neighborhood regulars. I docked a star only because the menu is pretty short for this nice of a place. I am proud to call this my go-to place for a perfectly made latte. It really is like a work of art: the steamed milk is thick, creamy, and slightly sweet, as only a well-trained barista can make it, and the foam is so delicious that I would not be ashamed to wear it on my upper lip as free advertising. I once tried a sip of a friend's chai latte and it was equally exquisite. Much better than Starbucks, at comparable prices. They use and sell Intelligentsia coffee, too! Unlike some, I actually love the spare modern decor with exposed brick, and would fight to the death for one of the comfy chairs in the back (I wish there were more). I also love that it seems to be a quiet, laid-back place used by locals for reading or working rather than for shrill caffeine-induced chatter--this is the most tranquil coffee shop I've found in the neighborhood. That said, I do sometimes wish they would turn the music down just a smidge, and change up the soundtrack a little more often. The outdoor patio is pleasant on warm days and set back far enough from Clark St. that you can enjoy the bustle without feeling caught up in it. My one selfish complaint? I wish they were open later. I walked by at about 8 pm on a Friday night and they were already closing up. (I think technically they close at 9, but maybe it was a slow night?) If they stayed open till 10 or 11, I think I would pack up my worldly possessions and move in. read more

Seating is limited, interior is modern and soothing, but not laid out very well. If you're stopping in with a group to grab drinks to-go, send one or two people in. Pros: Staff, Treats, Tea, Atmosphere, Art Cons: Coffee, Parking The Coffee Studio is one of those places you hate to love..... The main thing here is sadly, not the coffee.... Intelligentsia coffee for the most taste bitter and/or over roasted. One can not blame the staff for this, because they are given a product that is, just-ok. I would almost prefer "illy" coffee and thats ok coffee in itself but feel it is a step up. The treats (cookies, candy, etc.) on the other end is what I like the most and with the coffee and the staff is far superb than most places. I really like how friendly they are and I definitely felt they wanted me to come back again. On one end of the spectrum, The Coffee Studio almost reminds me of a doctors office. Very sterile and very clean. Everything has its place and every thing has its order. it's corporate-ish in style and most of the clientele that I have seen seem to "fit". In this case, "fit" for the locals. Everyone who is a "local" seem to sport their MAC laptops and the place can be drowned in quietness at times. Then, at the other end of the rainbow, you have the staff which clashes with the decor. Most are tattooed and outspoken hipsters and have something to say. They know their regular customers by name and know in a heart beat what they like. They are quick at making a good suggestion on a quick snack and know where to get a good bite to eat. I wouldn't say its an "independent" cafe, cuz' it doesn't feel that way. For some odd reason, I always feel some big name company is behind this place, but it definitely maintains a nice balance of chaos and order. I love The Coffee Studio and I will tell you why: the baristas there know how to make great espresso drinks. I lived in Seattle for a while (Victrola and Vivace - yum!) and discovered that latte foam should be creamy and espresso should be smooth. Then I moved to upstate New York and forgot again. Coffee Studio helped me remember what good coffee tastes like. The cafe itself is beautiful, modern, and full of light. It is little small however, which makes finding an open seat a little difficult on the weekend. Also, there tend to be a lot people working on computers. This is good because it's quiet but not good because I feel like if I had a conversation above a whisper people would be irritated or listening. Last time I used my laptop there, the cafe limited internet-use by giving a password with purchase that lasted an hour. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the baristas aren't particularly friendly. Not that they are rude, they just don't go beyond asking me what I would like and then go back to talking with visiting friends or other baristas. This is fine, but there is something nice about a very friendly server that adds something. All in all, if you want a real cappuccino, this is the place for you! read more

As an architect, the design of this place is flawless. That being said, it was designed by architects. As a coffee lover, they have strong black coffee, different options for tea (white tea included) and delicious pastry, salad or bagels. The best part, they also have cool beer and design magazine. Overall very good. Clean, hip, comfortable interior. Good service. Nice feel, good for reading/studying. One complaint: I don't know who trained their baristas... but they would do well to learn that the tastiness of an espresso shot is not directly proportional to how slow the shot pulls. Every single time I order an espresso here the shot is 35+ seconds and over-extracted. They do well with other espresso drinks that involve milk which dilutes the over-extracted shot. The technical expertise of their baristas is otherwise solid. But for God's sake... learn how to pull a decent espresso shot! All of this said, I would still nonetheless rank this cafe among the top Chicago coffeeshops. Great location, nice part of Andersonville. I am self employed and I find myself at coffee shops a lot...not only because I am addicted to java but also because it's nice to work around other people sometimes. The Coffee Studio is one of my favorite places to go because of their excellent coffee. Like anyplace, it's not perfect. It can get noisy like any coffee shop and for some, an hour of free internet is not long enough (although I use Wimax which is new in Chicago and therefore I don't have to rely on limited free internet service at coffee shops). Try the Cafe Solo for yourself or with a friend...it's a great way to get the perfect amount of coffee and the Intelligentsia beans are awesome (I prefer the Agua Preta from Brazil). As expected, the crowd it a mix of gay and straight and I think everyone feels welcomed. read more

Best lattes and specialty coffees in the city. Their frozen mocha is the best frozen coffee drink I've ever had. My brother-in-law likes to call The Coffee Studio "The Apple Store Coffee Shop" because he thinks that the interior is decorated just like the Apple Store. I would give The Coffee Studio 5 stars except for the fact that it takes the baristas FOREVER to make the drinks. I understand that it's not Starbucks (thank God!) but 10+ minutes for a cup of coffee seems a bit much. Nevertheless, it's a great place when you have time to spare. read more

Oh man are their espresso drinks good. So so so good. The cortado? Amazing. Iced americano? Fabulous. Crazy caramel soy latte sugar bomb concoction my friend ordered? Heaven. The only slightly underwhelming thing I've had here was their plain ol' coffee. Pony up the extra $1 and get an espresso drink. I personally really like the decor and seating but as others have noted it is a small space and it's sometimes hard to find a seat. But to that end, what can they do about it? I think they've done well with the space they have and I've never had to leave because it was too crowded. Sometimes, my friends and I end up sitting on the side tables next to the lounging chairs. No biggie. The music can get droney and annoying, but other times it's really great so that pro/con kinda cancels out. I really don't like that you have to get a new wi-fi password every hour or half hour or whatever it is. I'd take a half star off for that if I could. Coffee Studio: please change this requirement. It's super annoying and the baristas obviously hate having to pause to get me another dumb scrap of paper that's likely to end up on your floor along with the other 1000 or so you must go through in a day. read more

This place is a great local coffee shop in the Edgewater/ Andersonville area. It's a little bit of a hike from my house, but I'd much rather walk here than go to the Starbucks down the street. All the baristas are friendly and really know the menu. Sometimes it's really crowded and you have to wait for a seat, but that's probably a good sign right? Here are the highlights: -Delicious coffee and lattes. The baristas know what they're doing -pastries and food are delicious too. I think they make an effort to not let things sit out too long so nothing is dry I give it 5 stars because it's the only coffee shop I've found around here that has great coffee and great snacks without pretentious baristas :) read more

I had a business meeting here once. I ordered an iced americano. It's a notch above Starbucks in quality and price. The ambiance is nice -- attracting a more 'indie' crowd of bicycle messengers, artists, and telecommuting workers. The Coffee Studio has some of the best baristas I've encountered. Starting with delicious ingredients helps, but every beverage I've tried has been a work of art and tasted perfect. I also appreciate the quiet atmosphere. When I go to a cafe, I want to be left alone to enjoy my coffee and book.
