Needing last minute Christmas gifts, I wandered into the Chocolatesmith in late December. I found their amazing handmade wax covered chocolate and almost bought out the whole store hahaha. They have "Backpacker's Chocolate": rectangular shaped wax covered chocolate that features wax designs worthy of MoMA, and adorable wax covered chocolate chile peppers (both red AND green so you can gift your fellow New Mexicans "Christmas" all year round!) I loved them so much I went back two weeks later to get our office staff gifts. This time I added in their handmade gift cards and local hot chocolate. The employee even hooked me up with adorable gifts bags and satin ribbon for truly one-stop-shopping. But seriously: THE WAX COVERED CHOCOLATE. I hope they make these FOREVER. Though slightly out of the way for a visitor to Santa Fe, this little gem is so totally worth the extra effort. My grandmother (a bona fide chocaholic) and I recently spent a couple of days in Santa Fe and a friend recommended we stop in to the ChocolateSmith for some sweet treats. Holy cow. We spent nearly half an hour in this sweetly decorated little shop, owned by an adorable husband and wife team. The air is heavy with the aroma of top quality dark chocolate, and I swear, the decadence of it practically drips from the walls. If I could just bottle that fragrance...divine! I was passing through Santa Fe to eat at Bobcat's Bite but got there a little early-before it opened. So I decided to kill some time and found this place. I got pretty excited as I really love dark chocolate and this place has gotten great reviews here on Yelp. I walked in and the people who worked here are really friendly. Got really excited when I saw all sorts of dark chocolate mixed with stuff I've never even seen before. A few selections of hot chili with the dark chocolate. This got me really excited as I've had melted hot dark chocolate in a cup with a shot of chili and the spices really bring out the flavor in dark chocolate. So why not just mix it in the chocolate? In all honesty I ordered several things and don't remember all that I ordered and in the July weather, the chocolate started to melt a bit outside. But I chowed down. I was a little underwhelmed. I was expecting an orgasmic explosion of great flavors and strong dark chocolate to hit my palette but didn't really get it. I'm not sure why. The pistachio nut mixed in just didn't do it for me. I think maybe it might have been because of the quality of the pistachio nut? Could have been just me that day but I can't seem to agree with everyone else who's Yelped this place. I just felt like I've had so much better tasting chocolate in many other places. I was really curious about their famous Chocolate Pates...it was really good! Basically a nicely flavored ganache in wax - what a concept. The richness was actually perfect. It's a bit on the pricey side, but well worth it as a treat. They also make some other chocolate treats (bark, "drops", truffles and small "bars"). They have samples available when you walk in, so try it out to get an idea of what their chocolate tastes like. Without a doubt, the finest chocolate I have ever enjoyed in my life came from The Chocolate Smith. They (almost) exclusively make dark chocolate and there is nothing wrong about that. There is always something fresh being made in this tiny shop, which is a sign of a good business in my book. There is a machine constantly mixing dark chocolate within view of the sales part of the floor. The staff was super friendly and very tolerant of me acting like a 5 year old (the kid in the candy shop, anyone?) They mix their chocolate with marcona almonds, peanut butter, cherries, raspberries, cashews with curry, espresso beans, nibs and darker chocolate - just to name a few. They also sell chocolate ganache which they coat in Dutch Cheese wax (helps in the New Mexico Sun). The good news for me and other non-New Mexicans; They ship their yummy goodness all over this here country. There are not enough positive superlative expressions to describe these people or their chocolate. read more

The smell. The smell! You walk in and it hits you like a truck. Smell therapy. *sigh* But you want to know about the chocolate. I am so sad my budget limited me to four pieces. The prices are high, but the quality is higher. You won't find your typical chocolatier fare here. There was no sea foam here, not a turtle to be found. There were a few standard pieces, like caramel and almond bark, but that's about it. What they do have is highly unusual and incredibly delicious. I (painfully only) chose dipped caramel with sea salt, a cherry cluster, a pomegranate fig bar (which was a square chocolate filled with flavored ganache), and the Don Juan Pecan (which I had to get after staring at a picture of it on a flyer all through lunch). I was initially disappointed that the pomegranate fig bar was so much chocolate and only fruit essence, instead of actual fruit, but it was the right balance of flavors in the end. I would recommend it. The cherry cluster was perfectly chewy and just the right amount of sweet and tangy, finished with the bitterness and subtle sweetness of dark chocolate. Addictive with a capital "A." The caramel was smooth, creamy, and delicious, just as a really good caramel should be, and I love sea salt on my caramels. The Don Juan Pecan was gone way too soon, despite being fairly large. (Truthfully, they were all larger pieces than I've seen in other shops.) It was reminiscent of pecan pie, but not as sweet. The slight bitterness of the chocolate blended perfectly with the caramel, and the crunch of the pecans inside was surprising and delightful. I would venture to say this is their signature piece. Overall, my recommendation is to visit this shop if ever you get the chance and order whatever sparks your interest. The people are nice, the atmosphere is dreamy, and the candies can't be matched. this place is Nirvana, I mean really, what is not to like? I admit, I am biased towards dark chocolate, and these people seem to be too- so we are made for each other. Their chocolate-covered caramel with himalayan sea salt is insane! They also had a chocolate-covered caramel with normal white sea salt, but I went with the pink himalayan salt, and I don't know, but the pink salt has more flavor, though I doubt you'd go wrong with the white sea salt caramel either. The dark chocolate mountain bark is also ridiculously good. They had tons of different flavors of bark, but the mountain one was on sample the day we were there, which basically meant I kept going back to the sample jar pretending to look at the counter around there, but really, I was just taking more of the sample. So, out of obligation ( I felt) I bought some bark to take home- it had praline, coconut, and tons of other goodness in it. Everything in there looked great, but my anti-chocolate husband had me on an extremely tight leash in there, so I couldn't buy anything else. However, I heard they have some hiker-friendly chocolate that is wrapped in wax or something so it doesn't melt in your pack while on the trail. That is genius, and I will be back to seek that out. Holy cacao this place is amazing! Went Friday afternoon during our weekend getaway to SF and it was so delicious, we had to come back Saturday night. Skip dessert at the restaurant and just come here (although they close at 530 pm). They charge by the lb ($31/lb?) and can get expensive. We ended up getting about 8 different things over the two trips and everything was excellent. They usually have a few samples sitting out and the friendly, helpful staff will let you try anything you want. All of the chocolate is extremely high quality and best of all, local. We bought a few things as gifts and I know if we ever return to SF, my wife will drag me back here. read more

The ChocolateSMith has many unique & sweet creations, but I really loved their chocolate barks. I bought the green chili chocolate bark and the red chili chocolate bark to have a mini "taste test". In my opinion, they are both good, but the red chili pairs with chocolate a little better. Also, I highly recommend getting one or two of their sunset orange pate' truffles. I am allergic to chocolate. But everyone else I know loves it- so I go to the ChocolateSmith in Santa Fe. The patron waiting area of the shop is kinda small and generally has several people in it so you'll have to wait. There are ways around this: LOTS of businesses in Santa Fe carry items from the ChocolateSmith. The Co-Op has the gift tins and I've seen their cute little treats at Chocolate Maven around Easter time. If you want a custom filled tin, you'll need to go to the shop, but it'll be worth it when you are able to give the perfect gift to the chocolate lover in your life. read more

Or maybe "insanity-inducing" is the right word then. The Chocolate Smith melds the most absolutely brilliant and innovative combination of white chocolate, lemon, lavender and tamari almonds. One bite of this bark and I could not stop myself from devouring the entire bag. And it is perfect complement to a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Pure bliss. I stumbled on to a kiosk that chocolate smith has in downtown santa fe when I was recently there. The guy working there was great....lots of nice samples on trays to try on the kiosk and he was very helpful about telling me about them, and even apologetic that they did not have the entire collection. The chocolate is very good and I did buy some to take back home to Califronia. I never made it to the main store but I would rate their service and product 5 stars as I have here. Great tasting, fresh unique creations. Loved the plain chocolate covered caramel -- best rich and deeply flavored one I've had for years. Baaed on a brief chat with the owner, the butteriness was indeed from butter and lots of dairy product. The white chocolate lemon lavender bark, which my friend bought, was a delight to the palate. Their chocolates are (at the time of writing ) $31/lb. (which is more than I'd usually spend), but these are superb creations whose combinations, inventiveness, and depth of flavor surpass some of the more well known corporate chocolate manufacturers (such as Godiva). One difficulty was finding the place while driving. There's a sign faces the road straight on, but it's not visible. They do have an awning, but it's plain and says nothing. it would be helpful if the name were on it both straight on and on the side facing oncoming traffic. read more
