This is a cute little chocolate shop in Roncesvalles village. I was first introduced to this place by a colleague who bought me a bag of their dark chocolate and wildflower honey covered hazelnuts. Let's just say it takes a lot of willpower when I have a bag of those delicious and addictive hazelnuts nearby to not devour the whole bag in one sitting. While taking an out of town guest around downtown on a chocolate tour, we stopped in here. The place smelled great and as other Yelpers have mentioned, they sell an abundant array of chocolate covered foods, including truffles, nuts, brittles, sponge toffee, candied orange peels, licorice, potato chips, biscotti, and pretzels. I like that they are organic and fair trade. Although I didn't try it, they also sell hot beverages like coffee and hot chocolate, and their homemade ice creams looked amazing as well. My favourite product of theirs is still the dark chocolate covered hazelnuts with wildflower honey. The caramelized sugar from the honey adds a bit of sweetness and complexity while the dark chocolate balances it and keeps it from being too sweet. I guess it's weird to write a review of a chocolate shop without actually having eaten any chocolate, but here we are. We stopped in to buy a gift for a friend and noticed that they had a few flavors of ice cream on offer. I noticed one called "Burnt Caramel" and immediately knew I would be eating it within minutes. It did not disappoint. The ice cream was incredibly smooth and creamy, and it was rich with that burnt caramel flavor. I should also note that I ordered a "kiddie" cup and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was absolutely crammed with ice cream. All the chocolate looked quite tasty, too, but that'll have to wait for a return trip. read more

Just where do I begin? There is chocolate dipped EVERYTHING you can imagine here. Shelves and shelves of chocolate dip goods; both milk and dark. Oreos, toffee, potato chips, pretzels, pecan butter crunch, sea salt butter crunch, dried mangos, peanut butter, bacon, licorice, marshmallows...I don't think I need say more. As a former resident of the beloved Roncesvalles neighborhood, I made it a habit to visit as many of the new and old local shops situated in the area. One of these shops was The Chocolateria. Since I'm a huge fan of anything sweet (especially if it's covered in chocolate) it was an obvious MUST for me to visit this store. When we first entered the shop we were greeted by the sweet aroma of mouth watering chocolate. A friendly staff member (whom I think is the owner) also said hello and offered us assistance however we didn't require any help since we were just there to browse and buy. The shop itself is rather small in size. A few tables were set up in the front (which I presume is for patrons to sit and enjoy their house made ice cream) and there were walls & tables of chocolate covered goodies placed strategically throughout the store - plentiful but organized. For a small space, the shop has an impressive inventory offering delightful treats such as house made ice cream, potato chips dipped in chocolate, cocoa powder, and an array of truffles. That day I purchased the dark chocolate sea salt caramel turtles. This palatable candy consisted of bittersweet dark chocolate encasing a smooth and creamy caramel filling. There was some sea salt sprinkled on top which was a subtle salty taste that complemented the sweetness of the chocolate & caramel very well. The pricing of the products are comparable to other local chocolate shops in Toronto (ie. they are a tad on the pricey side) but the quality of the product is what you are paying for. Overall, delicious chocolates. I have not tried enough of their products to say it is the best in town but it is definitely worth a try if you happen to be in the vicinity. read more

Tim English is amazing. A succesful lawyer turned chocolatier, this store is the mixture of creativity and an entrepeneurial spirit. First off, the peanut butter bacon chocolate is a must. Unexpectedly amazing chewing into bacon like it were a raisin. Second off, i highly recommend the initimate truffle making course Tim can arrange for you and your friends. After using the 4x4 capabilities of my nephews super-stroller to navigate yet another season of construction on Roncesvalles, we finally made it up to The Chocolateria - one of the newest boutiques to open up on the strip. Immediately succumbing to the smell of delicious chocolate, we spent $20 in about 4 seconds! It was the sandwich board on the sidewalk that advertised the chocolate pairing of, get this, not just delicious chocolate and peanut butter, but BACON and cracked BLACK PEPPER that brought us in. OMG. Delish. It sounds wild, and I assure you it was, but somehow all of these amazing ingredients balanced each other out perfectly. The sweetness of the milk chocolate and the salt of the bacon cut the intensity of one another, and the peanut butter and black pepper were an added bonus. Being the gluttons that we are, couldn't help but grab a bag of the popular chocolate dipped potato chips as featured in Toronto Life mag (article link below). They were good, but I'm not a huge fan. While the chocolate was delicious, the potato chips tasted like salty cardboard; a no-name brand or something of the like. Overall, the chocolate is delicious. Cute little space as well. The chocolate is amazing, the homemade turtles are to die for, and so are the chocolate covered mesquite almonds. One problem. The owner is not friendly and has no sense of humour. I want to love my local chocolate shop...but instead I feel like I have put him out by showing up, no banter, no smiles, just business. Many visits, always the same... Disappointing. They have good flavours of ice cream like salted caramel, maple pecan and toasted caramel as well as an assortment of chocolates, but I give this place a one star because at the bottom of my ice cream was one dark short hair, I can only surmise where it came from and I was not a happy camper having eaten ice cream contaminated by this hair. Furthermore, the store closed one hour early, it was supposed to close at 8 but it closed at 7. Saw lots of disgruntled potential customers while eating my contaminated ice cream. A fan of all things chocolate, I was pretty excited when The Chocolateria opened up on Roncy. The highlight of this place has got to be the ice cream and the cookies. The first ice cream I tried had avocado and mint, and was incredible; the second was the caramel creation with house-made "crunchie" aka honeycomb bar bits throughout (sorry, I forget its actual name). If you're as crazy as me, you'll buy a package of their "crunchie" bars and add it to your ice cream dish. There are also some really great gift ideas, for example, I have given their molded guitar shaped chocolate bars as gifts several times. I'd love to sign up for their truffle making class! read more

One of my favourite Rocesvalles stores. There is a nice variety of flavours and textures in their chocolates. They handle the balance fairly well (sea salt chocolate can often be overpowering, but theirs is pretty good). My favourite bar is the bacon chocolate! I wouldn't get this anywhere else - they use a bacon that is not TOO salty and it's covered in sugar, so you get a good mix of bitter chocolate, chewy, savoury bacon and a bit of sweetness. :) Another favourite are their chocolate covered hazelnuts that also had a bit of honeysuckle. So good! That's worth 5 bucks in my books. The ice cream is some of the best I've ever had. I've tried several of the flavours and none have disappointed. Have yet to try their truffles. Yes; the price is not cheap - I used to work in a store that sold imported chocolates, and in this context I do not find the price, for locally made chocolate that is this delicious, to be too bad. If I could offer some advice to the owner, I have never seen them offer samples of the chocolate in-store or on the sidewalk, and this would be a good idea to draw more people. read more

Finally had to stop into this place to treat myself on a Friday! It smells so heavenly inside and there's an abundance of chocolates to choose from! As much as I wanted to try every chocolate they had in their store, I settled on some ice cream. The 'kitchen sink' flavour is delicious! So creamy with chunks of brownie, toffee, and chocolate. The only thing I must mention is that for a chocolate shop, you'd think the people working there would be a little friendlier! I found them to be quite cold. I see this place is on the chocolate-covered bacon bandwagon, so clearly they are keeping current with Whole Foods and country fair trends. I thought this place was pretty cool to have in the neighborhood, but I don't feel it has the same draw as something like SOMA in the Distillery district. Unfortunately, the prices are nearly just as expensive, so I'm not sure if this place can stay in business without the crowds. That being said, I'd come back here if I was in the area! The only staff member working when I arrived didn't seem to know the ingredients well; when I told her not to worry about it she seemed happy to oblige and kept to herself for the most part. The hot chocolate was pretty amazing (& strong) - I probably could have gotten a small because of how rich it was. We also got some homemade 'turtles', which were fresh & equally as yummy. I love this chocolate shop! First, we'll-tempered chocolates of all kinds. Second, they've got an amazing selection of stuffed dipped in chocolate. You want sour keys in chocolate?! They've got it! Pretzels?! Yes! Dried mangoes?! Of course! To boot, I also enjoy their straight forward selection of chocolates, with the kind of old fashioned but delicious flavours that I'm into (e.g. pistachio, raspberry, vanilla, caramel). I went in with my 5 year old to pick up some valentine's day chocolates, and they threw in slightly less than perfect chocolate lollipop. So great service to boot! And to top it all off, the prices are honest. They have a range of prices, starting at just a couple of bucks. Great place to go if you need to get a bunch of things. The Chocolateria is a small boutique of chocolatey sweets. While waiting for a table at Barque for brunch, we wandered into this small shop. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, chilli chocolate, peanut butter chocolate, sugar-free chocolate, and oh-so-popular bacon chocolate! I was pleasantly surprised by their unique items. There was an assortment of chocolate covered nuts and fruit and chocolate covered ginger as well. The pretzels looked good and they even have chocolate covered chips! Rosemary truffles anyone? I decided to buy two bars: * Salted dark chocolate * Milk chocolate and bacon The chocolate here was expensive. About $25 dollars for two bars. Chocolate shops are one part chocolate, one part experience. The chocolate here is great. They have a variety of truffles ($1.40 each), chocolate bars (most in the 5.75-5.95 range), and ice cream (2 scoops for under $5). The burnt caramel ice cream is delicious. The chocolate ice cream is also quite good, but not the best I have had. This place has beautiful boxes for gift purchases and a layout that makes it easy to see the merchandise. There is enough variety to satisfy any and every chocolate craving. The slight negative is service. In a chocolate shop ( most people who walk in the door already have an addiction to the stuff!), it should be easy to sell or at least pitch additional items with a sample or a simple, enthusiastic, "Have you tried our delicious _____?" Their dark chocolate is perfect--I would say it's better than Godiva's dark chocolate. My favourites include the sea salt and hazelnut bars. This is my favourite place to buy chocolate. It's of good quality, made in-house, and well priced. They have lots of fun and unique options. My favourites are the dark and spicy bar, the mint wafers, and dark chocolate covered pretzels, but I've never tried anything there that I didn't enjoy! They often have samples, which is a great way to test something new without having to go all in, and staff is great at offering-up suggestions. Best ice cream I have ever had. Seriously go here!!! I love their kitchen sink ice cream. They take some of their baked treats that don't sell and chop them up, and put them into the ice cream. The ice cream is loaded with fun surprises because not even they can tell you what is inside. The salted caramel is a flavour they usually always have on hand, and is a go to. Oh my word I may be spending more time in Roncesvalles, if anything just for this shop...yowza! When I arrived I was prepared for chocolate heaven...and this is exactly what I got. When I entered the shop I was hit in the face, not literally ofcourse or it would only be a 4 star rating...yes it is THAT good! What hit me in the face was the smell of good quality chocolate...I could feel my excitement levels rising. I looked around, and while the shop is small, I was just so distracted by all the delicious combinations. In the end I purchased salted caramel chocolate...I can only liken this to a dark, good quality, daim/dime bar with salt. It is so epic and tasty! I also bought a caramelized almond dark chocolate bar. Chocolate dipped potato chips caught my eye but I decided to save those for another time. I turned, felt the touch of destiny, and saw the ice cream. I was given a sample of the burnt toffee...crazy good. However I settled for the "kitchen sink", whats not to love about a chocolate ice cream that contains lots of smashed up pieces of whatever was lying around and the recipe changes everytime. I spotted chocolate covered oreos which looked immense. Alas I did not spot the candied bacon chocolate...another time for sure. I have been advised the hot chocolate is excellent too. Super products- some of the best ice cream ever! I do not waste calories on ice cream very often but the salted caramel is to die for. The chocolate products are very good quality and I get gifts here often. The prices are really reasonable for the quality. Why not 5 stars? The owner is super grumpy. He complains out loud about the fact that he should offer only one ice cream selection, 'when it is busy' and there are only 6 of us! He is a real jerk. I wish that his chocolate and ice cream wasn't so tasty. He should learn to chill and be kinder to his loyal clientele. I'm giving Chocolateria five stars for one thing and one thing only; their ice cream. This is simply the best ice cream I have ever had. It is truly special, a notch above. It is a bit of a subjective thing, I suppose, but this would be for people who truly love ice cream; the real deal, not gelato (not that I have anything in particular against gelato, I just prefer ice cream). Their base is a very eggy frozen custard that is rich and silky smooth, just as great ice cream ought to be. Some of the best chocolate I have had. Truffles are decadent and delicious. This shop is my go to place for gifts - lots of options for kids (chocolate dipped licorice for example!) and more sophisticated options for "bigger kids". I think the ice cream is tops - a secret of the city. In the summer when Ed's (which I also love) has a line out the door, pop up the street for a scoop of salted caramel at Chocolateria.
