Which question is more perplexing to answer: how are they able to fit three people into such tight quarters OR how are they able to knock out such delicious grub in such a cramped and hectic work environment? I used to see this compact food truck parked on 440 in Jersey City all the time and I finally got to try them when hitting the Water Lantern Festival in early autumn at Liberty State Park. They had a line out the wazoo but those three guys just kept plugging away and in a few minutes me and the family hunkered down and tore through their fish-n-chips. It's hot. It wasn't really greasy at all. It's perfectly cooked. It's perfectly seasoned. And yes... I'm talking about both the fish and those distinctive 'chips' (think cottage fries) of theirs. And their tartar sauce is that final nudge if you're thinking, "Maybe four, four-and-a-half stars?" to just be like... "Okay, it's a solid five.  Why we even debating this?!" The chippery was a bit of a let down. The portions are huge and prices are good, but I felt the fish was lacking flavor and bland. The chips/fries themselves needed tk be cooked longer. They also gave me the wrong sauce, I asked for cilantro lime and was given tarter sauce. I was pretty bummed about this. The spicy crab coleslaw salad was very saucy and tangy. I don't know why they stopped ventilating their boxes with the large "X" to keep things crispy; instead this time they just punctured the box a couple times. So as a result everything was soggy & cold. Disappointing. The fish didn't taste as fresh/good this time, also very few chips. The coconut shrimp I was surprised there were chips, rather I expected more shrimp quantity & for them to be more crispy coconut-y but it seems they just took regular fried shrimp & poured some coconut flavored sauce on it. Mac n cheese bites are gross. Tastes like sweet potatoe mush. Hushpuppies are extremely sweet. I couldn't eat either. Fried shrimp & fish are ok. It's weird frozen taste that made me queasy after a few bites. I threw it all away. I was craving a fresh seafood platter...and yes this order was indeed fresh seafood. Fresh seafood always tastes good...right? However I couldn't get past three major elements in why I would invest fried foods 1) Well seasoned crunchy battered eats 2) Crispness on the outside tenderness on the inside 3) Big flavors 4) Light oils but not oily This platter I ordered from The Chippery Food Truck was titled "Titanic the Unsinkable" consisted of fried fish, shrimp, clam strips, calamari and chip rounds. With this order I had very high expectations that were simply unmet. I forgot the Titanic did sink!! And so did this platter for me!! This platter was disappointing to say the least. What I got was an oily bland flavored flavorless collection of seafood. Yes the fish was fresh but goodness could I get some flavor besides oil?!! I didn't even get a lemon wedge to cut through some of that oil!! The flavorlessness of this platter is for children or a fearful of seasonings immature palate! The lemonade I ordered was weak as well...just lemon water made for again an immature bland palate. The potato rounds are not even worthy of mentioning...can I get a light salting after the fried chips? I gave this review a 3 star rating only because the seafood was fresh and that you could taste. The fry was executed well in that it was not over done or rubbery. I will say, I did enjoy the clam strips. The cocktail sauce and tartar sauce were really good! I was impressed by the portion sizes...the portions were quite generous and that is a plus. However, I don't know that I would order again after spending $68 on two bland yet abundant platters. I do think this food truck has some redeemable potential in my estimation. Just had my dinner from The Chippery and wow- I am thoroughly impressed! I had one fish, Honolulu chicken wings, fried shrimp, and small circle fried chipps potatoes. The fish itself was cooked to perfection and had a light crust. Their Honolulu sauce is crazy addictive...I found myself dipping the potatoes in this sauce! And lastly, the shrimp was nice and crispy and had great flavors. As for the sauces- I tried the tartar sauce, cilantro lime sauce, and chipotle sauce. All were good. I was actually impressed by the size of the sauce containers...we ended up having more than enough leftover during our meal. Who knew such big flavors could come out of such a small food truck. I checked this place out after a friend recommended it to me. I was happy to find out that they have funnel cake! I've been looking around for a spot that has funnel cake for years! I love some of the items they had to offer, so I ordered a couple more items. Along with the funnel cake, I ordered the fried shrimp and tried the soft shell crab. Personally, I don't think soft shell crab is my thing haha! The fried shrimp was great! I just wished their was more! The funnel cake was great! Warm and crunchy! We ordered via UberEats delivery on a Saturday night and the food was quick! We got an Oceantastic Combo (shrimp, calamari, clam strips, chips), Triple Fish and Chipps, Funnel Cake, & Fried Twix. We were impressed by the freshness of the fish & I would say the fish is the best out of their seafood. They cut slits into the packaging so the food wouldn't get too steamed and soggy during delivery. In the end, we did re-crispify everything in our oven because we prefer it but it was overall fine. I have been to the Chippery in Union and loved it. I was so happy when I learned they were in JC. Ordered online. Fish and chips and Clam strips. Order arrived in an unbelievably fast 30 minutes. The fish was lightly battered and delicious. The round waffle chips were a delight and PIPING HOT. I don't know how they kept them so hot and crispy. The clam strips were very good although I thought the portion was smallish. They come with a generous serving of tartar sauce. As a fish and chips lover I have found my new go-to delivery spot. Friday night dinner and we were looking for something adventurous (read unhealthy but oh so satisfying). Saw this on Grubhub and immediately caught my eye. I would have never believed that the best fish and chips in Jersey City came from a food truck parked in the Exxon gas station on 440. But it's true. I ordered the shrimnation, that came with a large piece of fish, 6 lightly battered shrimp and chips. Everything was hot and crisp when I got it home. The Cole slaw was also very tasty. Ordered the fried clams, shrimp and chips on Uber eats and it was great. Really wanted the fish but I called to ask what kind of fish they use and the guy told me it was Swai and tasted like cod. Swai is an Asian cat fish also known as basa and it is the cheapest and worst fish on the market. It is nothing like cod, Swai is farmed raised in ponds in Southeast Asia. Also Swai is a fresh water fish, cod is an ocean fish. They don't taste anything alike. I hope they put cod or any type of ocean fish on the menu and also at least tell customer what type of fish they sell. Some people don't eat fresh water fish or Vice versa. Okay so I don't mean to be the rain cloud on everyone else's good review but I did not get the experience everyone else did. For starters, my fish was not seasoned at all. Not even a little bit. Had it been seasoned it would've been perfect bc it had a pretty good crunch to it. I got the fish & crab and the crab was also a disappointment. It looked more like a little spider ( it was really tiny) was expecting so much more ! And finally the chips. I really wanted to like the chips. However they were way too salty. I finally stop here after seeing the truck for quite some time. I was so disappointed with myself for not stopping sooner. Needless to say I ate here Friday and Saturday. I told my daughter about it and was raving so much she was like cmon let me see if it all you said it was. So I went again on Saturday the food didn't even make it home.Everything I had was a perfect 5. I couldn't find one thing to criticize. I had almost everything on the menu. Of course the fish and chips. I don't know what it is about those chips but they are delicious and the fish was battered perfect. I had the coconut shrimp another homerun!!! Mozzarella bites were made with real mozzarella cheese which had us in awe. We also tried the Honolulu wings which didn't disappoint at all. We treated the kiddos to some fried Oreos which were delicious. The service was great. The staff was very friendly. The food is made to order therefore it's extremely fresh.
