This is an interesting bar, smaller than it looks online. This establishment is open all day yet when we were there they told us they ran out of multiple dishes. Then the waitress returned and said the kitchen was only servicing chicken wings. So we had those, pretty good chickens crispy and fresh. We both had a mimosa but it was lukewarm which is unfortunate but heavy pour. Music was jumpin and air was blasting. I'll have to try it again when it's earlier in the day. read more

So we're visiting and so many of our Uber drivers suggested this bar. They all said "it's a unique cocktail menu" and "food is made in front of you". We walked in Thursday evening and not many people at the bar which is okay... the food menu was very basic. We walked in thinking they would have more to offer. The cocktail menu was good, we had quite a few drinks. As we sat there, the ambiance changed into a club scene hahah! The music was good but the crowd was hit or miss. Lol. Walked by this place a million times over the years but finally stopped here during the off season (end of Dec) now this may explain the horrible drinks, blown out speakers and horrible ambiance. $36 for the worst espresso martini I've ever had and a rum punch poured out the tap topped with tablespoons of sour mix. They were absolutely awful. We almost fell out the chair when the bar tender told us our total. They don't have any scotch so there's a whole bunch of drinks 'The Chemist' can't even make. I had a party of 6 and we arrived about 10 minutes before opening, but wasn't sat until 10-15 minutes past opening... we were the first to arrive. I'll start with the pros first: - Service: Our server Courtney was an absolute jewel she was very attentive, knowledgeable, and even cut a rug with us. - Music/DJ: The music really made the experience, the DJ kept the hits coming -Food: The Shrimp & grits was awesome & so was the Salmon & grits. Opportunities: - Updated menus: The menu was misleading; for example there's a traditional breakfast that comes with eggs, grits, toast, bacon or sausage. I'm visiting for a family reunion and literally everyone told me to come here. This is definitely a dive bar, hands down. It's not the biggest place but it'll get the job done. Honestly, the music is the best part. Also, don't think you're going to have a conversation in here , the music is so loud. The bartenders aren't that attentive but once you get somebody they got you. The shrimp and grits were really good, however I did have some clumps. Seasoning of the shrimp is perfect and it's made with beef sausage. The wings are supposed to be deep fried but 2/4 were still greasy. The portions aren't that big hence basically getting two meals. All drinks are served in plastic cups without coasters. Honestly, the place has potential but the menu definitely needs to be upgraded and the bathroom needs a little love. just wanted to share my experience at that brunch spot I recently tried. Honestly, it was one of the worst meals I've ever had. They had security at the door and inside, trying to make the place feel exclusive, but it didn't work at all. The grits were terrible, and the eggs and bacon were just gross. For a price point between $25 to $35, they served us plastic forks, which is completely unacceptable. The DJ music was way too loud--it felt more like a bar than a restaurant. They really need to stick to drinks and give up on the food altogether. I'll definitely never go back. read more

On my first night of vacation out of state this is the first bar I've visited with a fellow yelper I met! The outside was so cool and it looks like a periodic table lol. The lights are so cool so as the color combination of the led lights from the bar is also pretty cool. We were only there for a little bit since they were closing in an hour when we came. We got the Mac and cheese app which was pretty good. And I got a one drink and my friend didn't really get any since we were running out of time already. The inside of the place was cool. It looks like a chemistry lab and my drink came in a beaker. The martinis are served with a dry ice effect. Too bad I didn't get a martini but maybe next time. A couple days before going to this restaurant we wanted to make sure they were open because we have walked by the restaurant many times on the way to the beach and they were closed. The hours on Facebook said they were open and they don't not have any hours posted on their windows or anything. Their phone was out of service so there was no way of contacting the restaurant. We arrived to the restaurant about 15 mins before opening 11:00 on a Sunday. When we got to the door we were told that they weren't opening until 11:30. On their Facebook page they have their hours posted opening at 11:00. Therefore we had about 45 mins to spare since they weren't opening on time. We arrived back to the restaurant again around 11:15, they did not open the doors until 11:40. It was very hot this morning as well. Finally we sat down at our table. After a few minutes of sitting we were greeted and asked what we wanted to drink but we still haven't gotten our menus yet because they were not there. Once we got our drinks we got our menus but had to share because they didn't have enough for everyone to have their own. The inside is has very dim lighting, the restaurant is like a club setting there was a DJ that played music. It was very hot, from what it looked like they had A/C on one side of the restaurant not sure if they worked because we weren't on that side they also keep the door open and it was very hot that day. Once we got our food I was expecting a little more than what we got since it was a nice price for chicken and waffles $22.99 we only received 3 wings and a waffle with a slice of strawberry and powered sugar. The drinks and music were good. The bathroom the floor was very wet in the stall had to be very careful when walking and for the soap there was no dispenser they had the gallon jug in the sink which is didn't look appropriate. Overall their time stamps aren't clear at all, the food was good just overpriced, the drinks were good and the music was a vibe. If you get a drink you get charged Hospitality 2%, Liquor Tax 6% and Service Charge 18%. We were told that the Service Charge was for the bar tenders but a couple of us from the group didn't get a drink but they were still charged with the 18%. read more

I was in Myrtle Beach for Jeep Jam. About 25 jeep club members came for Saturday Brunch. We arrived as soon as they opened, however they wasn't open lol a few minutes later someone pulled up to open up and we waited outside about 30 mins for them to officially open, it was chilly too. Once inside we all set down and ordered drinks and food. I had the fried wings, taste bad, the grease was old. No flavor, just taste greasy. Disappointed. If I were to create a bar, it would be this one! I loved this place. Just the experience of the decor, layout, drinks, so cool. I was just so thrilled about everything in here. You cannot go to Myrtle Beach and not visit The Chemist. Rundown: It's a bar located directly across the street from Zipline down from the beach. It is set up like a chemistry lab. The servers wear lab coats! All the tables have chemical elements printed on them and the entire floor is a periodic table! So cool to look at and a great conversation piece, you know, like how you failed AP science and had to retake it, or how biology class was when it came time to dissect the frog and all that... Instead of a candle or flowers as a center piece like most places, they have an Erlenmeyer flask with blue fluid and dry ice that smokes throughout the meal to look like a chemical reaction. Your water is not in a glass, it's in a beaker, just like the ones in a science lab, measurements and all. And the cocktail menu! They are displayed on an illuminated chart! The chart is on transparent glass and stands up on the table. Absolutely genius this place. The drinks are bomb! Presentation and strong. I had 3 Periodically Peach martinis and I was feeling it, usually takes me 4 martinis. All the martinis come out with the dry ice smoke affect, but the smoke doesn't just dissipate, it lasts pretty long which is nice, if you're like me and ordered it for that reason. All in all this place was awesome. Our server Anna, was the sweetest cutest thing ever with her accent, she's from Bosnia or something like that and she took her time to go through all the drinks with us to decide on, and made great recommendations. I highly recommend this place, can't wait to go back to MB to experience it all again. It's a small but well thought out little spot. Side note: even the bathroom is themed, the sink looks like the deep stainless ones from chemistry class right down to the faucet handles, and I believe the bar had similar spouts as well. The Saturday R&B brunch was everything I Needed!! When my party of 4 arrived there wasn't a wait. We were seated and greeted immediately. I've always walked past here when I go to myrtle and this time around I decided to check it out. It's a cute little restaurant that is all based on chemistry. Every table has an element on it. The decoration for lights and such on the ceiling looks like an atom. The waitresses and waiters wear lab coats. Their menus look like an organic compound. They had this nice looking thing on the table that when they put this ice thing in it it looks like it's smoking or that there's an experiment going on. This even goes for the martinis!!! It was definitely smoking and video worthy. The martinis were a bit strong but good. Alright enough about that. The food was delicious!!!!!!!!!! Not gonna lie usually when I get pasta it tastes the same with every bite so I get bored of it quick. But the shrimp scampi was something else. The shrimp had its own unique flavor and the spaghetti noodles itself had another flavor. So every bite was different. The flavor was rich but not too overwhelming. I love when a restaurant goes above and beyond to be itself. To separate itself from the commonplace eatery. The Chemist does just that. When you walk into the restaurant, the name becomes very self-evident in the theme of not just the decor, but every aspect of the restaurant. From the fun names of their food and drinks to the dry iced, beakers margaritas, The Chemist hits every check mark in the originality box. A few of the fun things that we noticed while dining here were: 1. Each table has an element from the periodic table on it to flow with the vibe of the restaurant. 2. All drinks are served in chemistry beakers and vials etc. 3. Many of the drinks had original names and included house made ingredients daily. 4. The menus themselves were laid out in a periodic table format, with the courses being named after the scientific process; hypothesis for appetizers, experiment for entrees and conclusion for desserts. 5. All of the wait stuff were wearing lab coats as part of their uniforms. You'd think a lot of this would make the place sound like a place that would cater to just the kids, but this is by far one of the most classy, hip and upscale eateries in the Myrtle Beach area. My wife and I ordered the Bondfire Shrimp for our appetizer and it was absolutely delicious. Probably the single best shrimp plate I've had, and that's saying something. I had a fairly generic burger for lunch (I won't comment further because I was sick during our visit and my taste buds weren't really rocking at top notch). But my wife had the ahi tuna and mentioned how delicious it was. It was seared to perfection (as she likes it a little more seared, they did so without hesitation). Overall the restaurant went above and beyond our expectations. From the waiter checking with the kitchen with each of our dishes to ensure there wasn't dairy in them (my wife has a dairy allergy) to our waiter, Amir, also detailing all of the signature drinks and menu items. We felt extremely taken care of here and if you're into the current culture of high scale eateries that flirt with the line of hipster chic, this place is a highly recommend ed experience. My party and I arrived around 7 and the entire place was empty, but that did not deter us from staying to try some of the drinks. I'm a huge science nerd and I've wanted to try this place for a year, so I was hell bent on seeing what this place was about. Our waitress Ana, seemed to be quite aloof and busy, even though this place was empty. She was very pushy and even though we had full beverages and just ordered an app. When the app was brought out she didn't give us cutlery or napkins, and when we requested them she still never brought them. I feel if she paid more attention to not just pushing drinks on us and less attention to flirting with the bartender, we would've had a way better experience. However, the saving grace of our evening were the drinks!! I got the blueberry- lavender mule and my boyfriend got a mojito and the professors punch. All of them were INCREDIBLE! I have never had such a tasty and refreshing mule. I do wish the food had more chemistry elements and thought put into it, but we did order a pretzel app which was delicious-- albeit we were unable to order our first two choices as they were "out". I ate here with my girlfriend last Saturday. We arrived around 7pm and there were only about 4 or 5 tables occupied. This made me pretty wary considering what time it was and the fact that we were literally just blocks away from the boardwalk. We stood there for about a minute, with not one staff member even acknowledging us. We seated ourselves at a table by the window, which turned out to be pretty sticky. At that point we had already settled in though. We chose this place because of the overall theme/decor. But something about the design decisions just doesn't work. My gf pointed out minor scientific inaccuracies with the menu/decor; some of the sleek/clean designs clash with the fact that half the restaurant just looks/feels dirty; the wide open view of Myrtle Beach while nice, does not mesh with the lab coats (admittedly a nice touch) and equipment; etc. We ordered a scallop appetizer. The presentation on everything here is top notch. The scallops were prepared well: soft and tender and not rubbery at all. However the base of the serving dish kept sliding everywhere when trying to cut the scallops. Annoying. Gf ordered the pork belly, which had a little too much char siu flavor for her. The shredded brussel sprouts were a welcome surprise though. I've never seen them prepared that way before. I ordered the wagyu steak medium. Mine came out medium-well, bordering on well-done. To me, messing up the temperature of a steak is a HUGE and almost indefensible error that a restaurant can make. This is even more disappointing because the steak was somehow still very flavorful and tender. It makes me wonder how much better it would be if cooked correctly. The service here was...questionable. When they tended to us, they were polite and helpful. However I found that there were too many times (even before getting our drink and food orders in) where we waited too long. We actually had to ask for our water from a different server at least 30 minutes after sitting down. When writing this review, I honestly kept going back and forth on how many stars to give, anywhere from 2 to 4 stars (the food was still that good, despite my overcooked steak). Ultimately I ask myself: do I want to come back here? And the answer is "no". It's a shame because I find the theme to be very interesting and think this place has a lot of potential. First off we LOVE the chemist! This is one of mine and my boyfriend's favorite places to eat in Myrtle Beach (and we've both been going since we were about 10 years old). We found this place last March and loved the atmosphere, food, drinks, and service! I got the unicorn fish and the BF got salmon while both trying several of their specialty drinks. Everything was amazing! We went again today and tried the wagyu steak and the ahi tuna. The BF loves his steak and I liked the ahi tuna with the rest of the meal, although felt like the tuna was a bit bland by itself. The drinks were amazing both times and we totally understand why they were voted one of the best cocktail bars in the area! The menu isn't huge but has a good variety and as I mentioned earlier, we've never been disappointed with the meals we've gotten overall. They also have a wide variety of beers, so if you aren't into cocktails theres still other options for you. The reason we only gave 4 stars is because the service was slightly lacking this past time around. We've never been here during peak tourist season so I'd be concerned to see the service when they are busy. Although I would still and do still recommend this place to anyone and everyone! I love the chemist/ hipster vibe and like that it's not just another tourist trap (they have one of my old textbooks from college as a decoration LOL). Was in Myrtle Beach on vacation, saw this place and just HAD to stop by. I am the biggest science nerd ever, so I thought this place was just so cool. And it was. It was late, about an hour before they closed, so we just decided to get drinks. The Molecular Mule, the Flux Capacitor, and the Periodically Peach Martini. Presentation of the drinks was awesome. Molecular Mule came in a copper cup, as it should. Peach martini came in a martini glass that was sitting in a bowl with dry ice in it, so cool. And the Flux Capacitor was served in a beaker. There's beakers and periodic tables literally. Lol It's the science class you always wanted. The menu was full of cool ish and it was hard to choose. But I went with the alchemists spin on Shepards pie full of lamb chunks and a potato foam on top...omg. So what you want. Thought you were getting a regular drink? Well, I drank a Flux Capacitor so, nah nothing regular about that unless you're McFlyyyy. Lol The dessert was a mango panna cotta that doubles as a sunny side up egg and candied bacon that blew my mind. I broke the mango yoke and squeaked like I'm 3 yrs old. I couldn't say enough good things about this lil joint. It's just cool. Period. Science geeks everywhere I've found Mecca. Ha. Fun outing in Myrtle Beach! The Chemist is just off the boardwalk and is well worth the walk away from the water! I loved the creative decor, fun ambiance and the special extra touches that they used to further the chemistry theme!! Every table had beakers with different colored liquids, once you sat down they added some dry ice so they produced a smoky vapor that bubbled up and out! Fun!! You can also order cocktails that have the dry ice in the vessel below the cocktail! Mad scientist style - gotta love it!! The light up drink menu had DNA models within and the table tops were each a differs element from the periodic table. They had a great selection of local craft brews and others from along the east coast, as well as some of the standard choices. The menu offered great options for snacking or items that were a little heartier. We arrived later in the evening, apparently after a big rush and they were eating to catch up and get organized again, which was fine as we weren't in a hurry- it's vacation!! We ordered a variety of drinks from the light up menu for he first round and switched to beer for the second. Mostly value based, the drinks were good but the martinis that we ordered seemed more like dessert and were smaller than a beer and went down way to fast! For food we had a house salad with a basil ranch dressing and a Cubano sandwich, as well as the poke stack on a seaweed salad, and a tomato bisque that came with a small grilled cheese. The poke was the best, but the salad was very good and the basil dressing was delicious. The bread in the cubano was burned and I have had much better Cubanos, it wasn't bad it just wasn't great or special. The Chemist is really committed to the theme with the periodic table on the floor and tables, cylinders for cups, molecular structures for lights, etc. Fun music playing - lots of techno remixes of popular songs My party was quickly seated and revived our cocktail orders rapidly although the waiter/mixologist forgot my original cocktail order but was quick to recover. I paid $9 for a 4 oz margarita (The Sixth Sense) ... taste was meh. It was a little too sour and the jalapeño didn't really carry over well but the presentation was great. The Shepherds pie was okay, it didn't have much flavor, and the tuna entree was a bit dry and a little too chewy. The Chemist is all about presentation, and not really about good food. This place is disgusting!! The floor is sticky, the tables are sticky, the menus are stained and sticky and the servers are indifferent to their customers. It's a travesty that such a great concept and potential gem right in the heart of MB is managed so poorly. I had hoped they would have fixed some of their issues since my last visit a year ago but unfortunately it's worse. read more
