The cave is now open to anyone 21years or older on tuesday nights starting at 9pm and they have great deals on tuesday only $2 for shots, wells, and beers. And they still allow people to reserve the place on thurs,fri,and saturdays everyweek! The closest thing to a real nightclub in Lawrence, however after covid the Cave is only open when an organization rents it out for an event. The music is great and provides a mixture of EDM techno/house, and pop hits, and the drinks are moderately priced. My only complaint is that it's not always open to the public, and there are vacant rooms in the cave with full bars that aren't used due to a limited clientele. I wish the Cave was a place Lawrence locals and college students could go to party hard all weekend. read more

Definitely unique, on the lower levels below ground of the new Oread Hotel next to the U. of Kansas Campus. Serious competition for downtown nightlife. On the first floor, there is the Bird Dog Bar, which is open to everyone. One floor down is the "lower lobby" below ground. It includes a sandwich shop and a pizza place. Continuing below ground, you will be in "The Cave," which is a bit like continuing down into a dungeon, but instead finding floor after floor of bars, with the lowest level containing a night club. One level down from the Lower Lobby is the Wine Bar. Next level down is the Shot Bar. Below that is the deep Cave nightclub, although the two floors above are run by the same people and are associated with the Cave, especially for overflow crowds from the lowest level nightclub. Except for the Lower Lobby, which is the first level below ground, the deeper down levels do not open until 9 pm, and only on Wednesday - Saturday. They charge a cover charge for the Cave and its associated Wine Bar and Shot Bar, but that does not apply until the Cave becomes crowded at around 11 pm. If you arrive at 9 pm, there will not likely be a cover charge. The only easy parking is in the KU Memorial Union lot a block away, and it is free after 5 pm and on weekdays and all day on weekends. The hotel's garage is only for hotel guests. There will be valet parking for the restaurant to open in mid February, but not for the Cave. There also is on-street parking, but not that easy to find. read more

Never written a review before but here it goes... Ever since Tonic closed down, my friends and I have been searching for a club-like atmosphere without driving all the way to KC. One friend mentioned the Cave and we decided, eh why not. Definitely not what I was expecting. It was hyped up to be this really cool club people go to but overall, I was around a lot of underage drunk college kids. My friends are older (as in mid-late 20s) and the crowd made us feel very uncomfortable. And to top it all off, my wallet was stolen there. I left it sitting on the bar for like 5 min, and boom...gone. Hide your possessions well. The staff was understanding, though...which about the only plus to this place. It was pretty nasty, napkins and drinks all over the floor, and just a small space with too many frat boys. I do not recommend this place at all. If you are really wanting a club atmosphere, just make the drive to P&L. read more

Good for a fun night out with friends, but it takes a while to pick up here... plus, no offense to the DJ, but seriously? Talking a bunch in between songs kills the mood. Weird picks in dance music with tons of repeats, but maybe its just cause I'm used to DJs in cali. Or maybe I can't dance any more... haha. If you don't want to travel to KC and you have fun people to go to, I'd still consider dropping by here. Visited this club underneath the hotel during a stay in 2016 during a trip up from Okla to see Bayside (just got yelp). And yeah, lots of minors with it being 18-to-enter--what did you expect? I definitely felt very old in here at first, surrounded by mostly college kids, but to be honest, I had a blast. That feeling went away pretty fast. Everyone was really nice and courteous, especially the staff. Maybe because of my age? Idk. Sound was incredible in there, and the drinks were delicious. The Cave has fond memories for me because I've always been with groups of friends whose company I've really enjoyed, so there a definitely good times to be had. These good times are only in some ways because of The Cave, and in more ways despite it. The atmosphere is interesting and the underground, multi-room design is kinda cool. And, maybe it's because the lights are low, but it's nice enough inside. It's kept pretty clean and has a nice sense of style in some areas. The bartenders are attentive and polite and the coat check is a nice plus. The downsides are that our group was charged a cover when we got there around 9:30pm (the security staff assured us it was pretty crowded down there) and we were literally some of the first people there -- things didn't pick up for another hour. It felt a little ridiculous to pay that much when they should be begging people to come that early and buy drinks. Their beer selection is pretty limited, relying on mainly domestics. The mixed drinks are pricey and don't use especially good components. There are lots of KU students there, obviously, so if that's not your scene, The Cave probably will annoy more than impress. Every so often a decidedly older group of people from the hotel will wander down, and that can be entertaining and/or uncomfortable, depending on how well you handle second-hand embarrassment. Also, it's a tight dancing space, so you or someone you know will almost always get a drink spilled on you (if you're lucky you'll just be walking in it). The music is pretty loud and the deejaying can be hit-or-miss. The Cave's not the worst place in the world to go out with a group. In fact, it can be really, really fun. The atmosphere and crowd is slightly endearing despite the drawbacks, and a little because of them. Just be prepared to pay a little more, go a little deaf, and see some weird people act a little weird. Review: 2.5 stars. read more

I've been to the cave a few times and never really had an extraordinary time, even when I got really plastered. They definitely cater to the fraternity, polo, no taste in music type. The bar tenders were OK at most and the shot girls were nice, as well as the doormen, but the manager was a complete d-bag. The one working that night was a short guy with red hair and a big ego who walked around like he was hot shit. Word on the streets is that he is the owners son and completely unqualified for his position. This makes sense considering they have gone downhill recently. Worst experience getting into a club I have EVER had. My friends and I drove up from Wichita to go to Cave, and when we got to the club the security wouldn't let my three other girlfriends and I enter because we weren't KU students. We were disappointed but understood as it was really busy, until a group of guys (from Mizzou) in line right behind us got in without problem. I approached a security guard to ask why the guys were let in and we weren't, and he replied "I guess that's what they got for sucking d***" I have NEVER been so appalled and insulted in my life, and have never dealt with security that was so rude and inappropriate. Every time I went to the Cave my drinks were really cheap. I would order 2 doubles and it would cost me like $5. On my first visit I ordered 6 drinks at last call for my friends and it cost me $9 (not sure if prices vary). The staff was always really nice. In the fall and winter, you can check your coat in before going into the room with the dance floor, the only place in I've been to in Lawrence where you can do that. It's way less crowded in the summer as well, late in the school year it gets pretty packed. This is also the cleanest place I've been to in Lawrence. It has public and private bathrooms that aren't all tagged by drunk idiots. As far as I know there is no dress code, but most people are dressed nicely. If you have a few drinks before you get there and show up early to avoid the cover, you can have a good night for just $10. This place is a disgrace to Oread Hill. My first time at the cave was AWFUL. Worse than AWFUL. I don't even know a word to accurately describe it. The people (customers) there were disgusting, the counters were covered in stickiness, (disgusting 'shot-spill'). The workers, both the bouncers and coat-counter people were sketchy and exuded the UTMOST dis-respectfulness towards the customers. Trying to create conversation and being nice was an insult to them, apparently. One of the off-clock bartenders even named "Mark" or "Matt" really insulted me PERSONALLY, as a paying customer. Regardless of being on or off clock, I felt his responsibility as the 'face' of his company, he should have proactively represented his employer (THE CAVE) with a more reputable attitude and reaction towards the people that are signing his paycheck. The entire time I was expressing my concerns every present person was holding back laughter. It was very unbecoming and I definitely will NEVER go back nor will I ever recommend any of my associates or friends to visit. I hope this review has helped in your recreational decisions. First impressions count for everything and if a bar/club can't persuade you the first time then it probably never will! This place is CRAP!
