We stayed here for 3 nights while we were in the area for a wedding. It was absolutely beautiful and very comfortable. Be aware, this is a historic house and you must be able to get up the stairs to get to the rooms. It is not handicap friendly. The location was perfect. Only a few minutes drive to many things. The breakfast could've been better. I'm used to a homemade breakfast when you stay at B&Bs. This was a "continental" breakfast. They did put snacks and drinks out for people to have during the day, which was a nice touch. The place was easy to find and they offered free bicycles to use. There were beach towels and things. You could use the fire pit and corn hole too. They also offered free kayak use down the street. No shortage of things to do. read more

Checking in was very easy, especially since we arrived late. The hotel is bright comfortable in the main areas of the large bed and breakfast. The bed was extra comfortable and the French roast coffee was delicious every morning. You have options for breakfast, continental the Stannard or walk across the street to the Westbrook Inn for a breakfast special that changes daily. We enjoyed both versions read more

Booked this overnight stay after seeing positive reviews on yelp. We were looking for a place close to the beach, quaint and quiet. What a great b&b. It is beautiful on the outside and inside. Well kept and just overall lovely. Located right next door to a dunkin donuts (perfect! except it closes early) and close to everything in town, this charming house is the star of the block. The inside has a pool table, a game area, and lots of places just to relax..especially on the awesome porch out back. The inside is super clean and comfortable. When we opened the door to our room, you could smell the fresh laundry. The hosts provide you with lounge chairs and towels for the beach, and send you off with a lovely breakfast. The only things I didn't realize, but was not a problem for us was that there was no tv in our room (but there was in the lounge area) and the beach was about a 10-15 minute walk. Walking is no problem but not very doable in the 90+ weather we had. If you plan to drive your car to the beach you have to park in the public lot which is $20 per car, or else you can speak to the hosts and they can get you a pass. Because check in at the inn is at 4 and we only stayed overnight, we went to the beach the following day, after check out, decided to pay the fee to park in the lot. It was all worth it, to feel relaxed and getaway, even if just overnight. read more

This b&b is a rare gem of the Connecticut coastline and is an ideal stop for anyone looking to experience the charm of New England's coastal culture. The decor is traditional, delightful and cozy. The furnishings have been carefully curated to highlight the style of Colonial America and the sea-side industries. The hosts, Jim and Mary, are friendly, kind and considerate. They will make you feel like an honored guest in their home. The period building highlights its historic construction with exposed beams and wide floor boards. The guest rooms have been recently renovated and have modern amenities, dedicated climate control, base-board heating and tile floors in the bathrooms. The aspects of the b&b experience that take the Captain Stannard from great to excellent include: (1) the excellent quality breakfasts, on par with a highly rated restaurant; and (2) the attention to detail, for example fresh homemade cookies left in the rooms as part of the daily housekeeping. Overall, I highly recommend staying at the Captain Stannard if you are visiting the Connecticut shoreline. read more

My friends and I came for a crafty weekend retreat and we loved it!! Highly recommend it! A lovely home full of charm and grace. I completely enjoyed my experience at the Captain Stannard House. Each room is beautiful in its own way with pretty linens, artwork and antique furniture. A peaceful respite from our noisy lives in NYC. Helen is an amazing chef and her food was impeccable and tasty. Great personality too! Loved the brownie bites, pork loin, Caesar salad, desserts and so much more. The music and food presentation were just lovely. You will not go hungry! Be aware that there are stairs to climb. Some of the ladies in our group were surprised by that when carrying their luggage up a small flight of stairs. Hey, we are New Yorkers living in tiny apartments, what can I say? :) it's no big deal, but something worth noting if you're an older adult, have back issues, etc. Jim was a great host to our lively group (sorry we didnt get to meet Mary) and he was helpful in making our stay comfortable and enjoyable. He took care of every need. We took over the dining area with our crafts with their permission and it was so fun to have room to create! It was very nice to have the Inn all to ourselves and felt like home but better! If you're interested in a group retreat, scrapbooking weekend with friends or family gathering then this is the place. Beautiful inn, tons of history, extremely friendly owners that make you feel right at home, very clean and quaint rooms including water and a homemade treat. Walking distance to a beautiful beach. The best part is the handmade, absolutely delicious breakfast served in a beautiful, relaxing, candle lit dining room. Definitly should take a night away just for the calm, cozy experience. Options of going out, its close to lots to do and very short drive from 95 or stay in and play a game of pool or sit by the fire and read a book or even show off your talent on the house piano. One of my absolute favorite inns to stay at ...period. Love the pool table, the deck, all the rooms, the hospitality, the view, the free cookies you get in your room...I could go on and on. From the very first hello to the warm goodbye - I enjoyed exquisite daily breakfast cuisine served with warmth and sincerity. Jim had even placed homemade oatmeal cookies by my bed to enjoy at night. A Perfect meeting place! Being from the Boston area and our friends from NJ it was a perfect place to meet in the middle!! A lovely Inn with gracious owners and staff! Not a lot of recent reviews, older reviews are good though. I should have paid more attention to the dates. This one is July 2019! Not the place for me. Very disappointing that we had to have an hour long confrontation about getting the rooms that we booked. I booked all queens months in advance. Day we get there, we are informed that we are getting one double with the shared bath, not acceptable. Even if they reserve the right to switch rooms, that should really be "apples to apples", not "superior to inferior". Went through a major hassle to get a room that supposedly didn't exist, but magically did exist after not giving up. So if you are up for a struggle, and less than honesty, Enjoy! My husband and I planned a nice 2 night getaway staying at Captain Stannard. The cancellation policy was for 1 week in advance or full loss which is already a policy not consistent with the industry. 2 days before our departure my husband began feeling ill. I called to see our options but I wasn't really sure I was ready to cancel. I was hoping he just had a cold and we'd be ok to go at least for one night. The hotel agreed to cancel the first night with no penalty. We are supposed to check in today but he still isn't feeling well and we're going to get a covid test for him. I called to cancel tonight but they wouldn't provide any refund. I'm trying to find someone else to take the reservation for me so I'm not out $215. I think this is extremely rigid in today's circumstance. The hotel is wiling to risk the safety of the other guests for the cost of a one night stay. I would advise no one to go there until the pandemic is over, as some people might feel forced to go even if they are sick. read more

The Captain Stannard House is the kind of place that feels like you walked back into time, not just the time of centuries past but also there's feeling of glimpsing back to your childhood. There is a sense of humor that runs throughout the entire establishment that starts with the proprietors Mary and Jim, and then as you move throughout the old world rooms, you see wonderful little reminders of things that just make you giggle, such as the "pouting chair" facing the corner, or the big cabinet of games that announces "fun and games" everything, hand painted and beautifully designed. In the game Room there's always a puzzle on the table there's always a chess set out and the pool table just beckons to play with you. There are comfy loveseats right next to the warm and welcoming fire that can be turned on with a switch. The bedrooms are magnificent, the rooms are so clean and so fresh. Sometimes a bed and breakfast can feel a little too old sometimes it can feel like a museum that's not what you get at the Captain Stannard instead you get more of a feeling like someone from the past holding out a comforting hand to you inviting you to a simpler and more joyous time, where you can unplug from your gadgets, relax with a book in the great room or watch a movie in lounge and even laugh and play by the fire. I was there with a huge group of 32, it never felt crowded, it always felt spacious, gracious and peaceful. I was also enchanted by the food, not only was it truly delicious from the fresh brewed coffee and homemade pouncake but it also was served with not just a smile but with love. You feel loved when you go there even when you are a total stranger, its a deeply warm feeling that sets the Captain Stannard house apart from any hotel and even any B&B out there. This is not the kind of bed and breakfast that gives you a bagel from Safeway! Everything has a homemade touch everything feels warm and welcoming and I deeply enjoyed my stay there and my time with Jim and Mary. Definitely 5 stars, and I would give way more if I could!!! read more

I don't even know where to begin. This was the ceremony and reception site for our wedding in October. Jim and Mary were very accommodating and made my family and guests feel at home. The rooms were charming, clean, and had little treats waiting for you. The common area was amazing to have out of town guest be able to relax and socialize. I have been staying with Jim and Mary over the past month when I am in town for business. The accomodations are warm and cozy. The Inn is close by to several great restaurants. Since I leave early for work, they have made an excellent breakfast to accommodate my diet and timing. I feel like I have a home in a new town thanks to Jim and Mary. read more

JIm & Mary went above and beyond for us. Our stay was awesome. They are so friendly, and the facility and the breakfast were both perfect.
