Wow, we recently were in San Fran on holiday. I hadn't been in the City for over 20 years. Grew up in the Bay area and remember visiting the Cannery often then. So, looked forward to seeing it again. How sad. Pretty much empty spaces. Not what it once was. Still a great location. Maybe someday it will go back to what I remember, but for now, not really worth a visit unless there is a store you are looking for. read more

Zombies have taken over. Norman's Filipino ice cream is kind of good. I was only here late one weekday night because some friend's had some alumni Art Institute gathering here. Yeah, why here? Uh... yeah, that's all I got. Actually, Norman's should serve brain-flavored ice cream. Gross right? But zombies love it! read more

I didn't come here when I lived here- just on the last few trips back (april/may 2010). The last time we came here, we went to Norman's for ice cream and halo-halo (yummy- glad we came upon it a couple years prior but it was Mitchell's back then) and listened to a performer on a little stage in the courtyard- he was very good, BTW. I think that there was a sunday brunch going on in the restaurant nearby, because there were lots of folding chairs set up. We sat at the picnic table. It was a nice vibe- relaxing, sunny, ice cream and music- what's better than that? Lots of people walking past. We may have gone into a few stores but nothing really caught our eyes. We'll be back for more Norman's on our next trip. read more

Yeah, there's a ton of stores around but the building itself and all the history surrounding are interesting enough to check it out.

Cool building housing restaurants, shops, specialty stores...in the middle of the Wharf area...

Very touristy, but I expected that coming in. We stopped by here on the 4th to grab a few pitchers before the fireworks, and we somehow were able to grab a nice corner booth. Our server was really nice, even though I'm sure this was the last place she wanted to be on a Holiday. Although extremely packed, the pitchers came regularly and I had a great time. They have 68 beers on tap, so it was nice trying beers I had never tasted. Granted, I probably won't ever be back here, but if you're down on the piers and feel like exploring some beers, this would be the place to do it. read more

Hey FARMERS MARKET here is surprising! Not as varied as Ferry Plaza, but hey, anything to avoid Whole Foods and the crazies there! Too bad it is not in my neighborhood, but this beats having out of town guests buy crap from Safeway. Great berry farmers and great samples...good stuff to share without quite the crush. I think it starts April to October on Saturday from 9 am - 1pm, but will check again. Fun shopping mall with history. Last time when I went there thought it had not much going on. Lot of stores have left but I hope great little store will come back. Located in Del Monte Square, a complex that includes the Argonaut Hotel and Maritime Museum, the Cannery - built in 1907 and once the largest peach cannery in the world - received a much-needed facelift after a ten-hour long, five-alarm blaze in the adjacent warehouse caused considerable damage to the vertical mall in March 2002. Once the least interesting of the Fisherman's Wharf attractions, its landscaping now includes a piazza that plays host to street performers, a weekly organic farmers' market, a Parisian-style antique mart, and sidewalk cafes. The three-story structure, with its brick walls and arched passageways, is a labyrinth of balconies, bridges, and exterior staircases, of both architectural and historic interest. The ninety-foot oak-paneled long hall and carved fireplace located in the reception area of Jack Cannery Bar, and the incredible 13th Century Moorish ceiling from a palace in Toledo, Spain that's installed on the Cannery's third floor, originally were owned by William Randoph Hearst. The olive trees in the cobblestoned courtyard are more than 130 years old. Merchants include Basic Brown Bear Factory (a birthing place for teddy bears), Kachina Gallery (American Indian crafts and jewelry), Lark in the Morning (musical instruments, artwork, books, and recordings from around the globe), Russian Ark and Russian Treasure (crafts and collectibles from the former Soviet Union), a number of indoor-outdoor restaurants, including the excellent Tre Fratelli, and the Green Room Comedy Club. The Cannery - Shopping Centers Near Me - San Francisco, California

It has fallen on hard times. The place is essentially empty. Only a couple of shops hanging in. It's not being remodeled, it is suffering from a lack of tenants. A sign of the times. Can't really see anyone moving in at this point. No draw. I have visited this place for over 35 years and seeing it as it is now is just sad. Same can be said for Ghirardelli Square. At one time these two places we're big draws with every store front filled. Not now. read more

A mixed bag. This center has had its ups and downs. During the late 70s and through much of the 80s this was a thriving shopping center. Around the mid 90s things started to go down hill, and based on the most recent reviews (and the occasional driveby) not much has changed. There used to be kite shops, high end novelty stores, importers, and just over all a very eclectic and welcoming collection of mid high end merchants, including "Just Deserts" (no longer there , I think) which, for a time, had the best deserts in San Francisco. My one real negative experience was when I took a lady friend to the outdoor cafe in the foyer next to the stage. The hostess/waitress there was exceptionally rude. Lady friend was a vegan, and the hostess told us that the vegetable soup with beef broth was vegan friendly. Not so. The Cannery may recover, and I hope it does, but it remains to be seen. It was a place I used to love to visit. Not so much now. Like another reviewer stated, it's very much a tourist area, but it used to be a decent one at one time. EDIT; May 19th, 2016 Well, I swung by it again today, and there seem to be a few more places to eat, but only one Sock Store for women. The Art Institute of San Francisco has taken over much of the top floor which used to be a lot of white collar business offices in the 80s; lawyers, real estate, investment firms and so forth. Again, this used to be a thriving eclectic shopping center, but has transformed into a sort of restaurant / bar hub with two tourist centers and one store. Kind of an odd transformation. Now that the low housing complex has been revamped perhaps new clientele with some spending cash will help revive this area, and perhaps, hope beyond hope, see a resurgence for the area. read more

This is a review based on what this place has become, not what it used to be. This area is pretty dead now. It's a neat little shortcut between streets, but there's not much here to make you want to stay awhile. There's a bar to get your drink on, a Japanese spot to get your grub on, and an ice cream spot to get your desserts on. THAT'S IT. read more

It was a beautiful Saturday with warm weather and we decided to stroll like the tourists and walked into the Cannery. There was live jazz taking place with people sipping beer on the benches, it was just a lovely sight. The stores are kinda cute in its own way though very secluded and not sure if there are many patrons. There seems different nooks and corners in the bldg but some corners are definitely quieter than another. read more

Not much left here, some businesses and offices and a few stores and restaurants. They've recently fixed up the building a bit.

I can't really comment on the food or drink because we walked into the place, got dirty looks from all the patrons already seated and than the staff didn't even bother speaking to us. After waiting for 10 mins to be even spoken to, we decided to take our business else where. Considering this was our 3rd stop on our "pub crawl", it was disappointing that given the very cool atmosphere, to have such a rude experience!!!! But that's ok since there are no lack of bars to try in this area!!! Onto the Blue Mermaid next door!!! read more

Just another noisy, congested North Point tourist trap and a basic waste of time. All of the fine boutiques and great restaurants that used to be there closed years ago, including my Sicilian favorite that made huge crab sandwiches. Again, impossible parking unless you pay a bundle for it. read more
