A historical building located in the heart of San Francisco, this building has special significance for our family.
My wife recently lost her father, and this has been our first trip alone since then. We knew that his first job after coming to the States (the one that sponsored him) was in San Francisco in 1967, but didn't really know much information. We found his journal from that time, and got the name and address of this job: first day at work on Feb 16, 1967 at H.K. Ferguson Co. at 760 Market. It was within walking distance from the cruise terminal, so decided to walk there, admiring San Francisco along the way. We didn't know what we would find, but felt good vibes (also mentioning that this happened to be my wife's birthday aka reason for this trip).
When we got there, we realized that the building at 760 Market was historical from the time of the SF earthquake and was called the Phelan building with a rich history. It is shaped like a triangle, being surrounded by 3 streets, and houses various businesses. Sadly, it is pretty empty with a lot of construction (like a lot of office buildings in downtown San Francisco), but has a large candy store that we stopped into.
As we walked the perimeter of the building, we finally found the main entrance (which was locked since it was past 5 pm). But the nice security woman let us in, once we explained the purpose of our trip and that we just wanted to read the lobby signs explaining the history of the building. We quickly took pictures of each sign (uploaded onto Yelp), and were on our way.
We felt something here, and it was even more impactful when we looked at the 3 companies that are still operational in the building. One of them is Flexport, which has special significance now. History is all about lives intersecting, and I believe that this building has played a part and maybe even might in the future. Only time will tell. read more
