The Hibiscus Event Space - Be prepared to meet absurd cleaning expectations or else pay $400

    The Hibiscus Event Space

I didn't want to taint my wedding memories with a negative review, but our experience was so…read morefrustrating that others deserve to know what they're getting into: The Hibiscus is disorganized, unresponsive, and will nickel-and-dime you after the fact. I'm posting this 2 days after my reception. 1. They ghosted us after booking. I asked repeatedly for photos and pricing on decor they'd promised during our tour. Literal months of unanswered emails and calls. My mom resorted to checking their online calendar and showing up in person during setup for other events just to catch someone. Even then, we only got a rough quote for thousands of dollars with no photos of what they could actually deliver. With one month to go, my family decided to do all the decor ourselves. I worry they will now use photos of our hard work as their own; if they send you pics of decor, make sure to confirm their staff did it and not renters. 2. Critical requirements sent days before. Two days before our wedding weekend - when family was arriving and we were drowning in final preparations - they emailed asking for our bartending vendor's COI and sent detailed check in/out instructions for the first time. I'm lucky I even checked my email to see them. Even worse - when the COI provided didn't meet their specs, they expected me to mediate between them and the bartending company the day before my wedding, when I had a hundred other things to take care of. This should have been handled months in advance! 3. Hidden lighting charges. During our tour, we were shown the wall lighting and told it could be set to any color and brightness. I specifically said I wanted this because I hate harsh overhead lighting. They never mentioned it would cost extra. On our wedding day, I arrived to see only the overhead lights on. My husband had to call Nneka to come turn on the wall lights during cocktail hour, with guests already there. We were billed $250 for turning on these permanent fixtures we thought were included (reduced to $100 when my complaint went to management). 4. Unreasonable cleaning expectations and fees. After our reception we collected all items and trash, wiped tables, stacked chairs, and left the venue in good condition (see photo). They emailed me the next day claiming "it does not appear that any cleaning was done" and tried to charge us $400. After I pushed back with the photo, they reduced it to $250, saying we didn't sweep the floors and haul trash to the dumpster. A commercial venue expecting exhausted clients to leave the space move-in-ready for the next renter is absurd, especially when the full checklist is emailed to the bride only 2 days before the weekend. 5. Zero on-site support. Staff appeared briefly at setup, then vanished. No one was there during or at the end of our event. We were completely on our own, expected to leave the venue ready for the next renters, and lock the doors ourselves. My family poured our hearts into making this night beautiful, and it was--but no thanks to Hibiscus staff. This is a commercial venue but they manage it worse than an Airbnb. It made our wedding exponentially more stressful than necessary - so bad that I'm writing this when I should be enjoying newlywed bliss!

Planning couldn't have been easier- our coordinator was very easy to reach and always quick with an answer with any questions we had. The venue is charming and the roof top view is stunning. We chose to have a "Before They Say I Do BBQ" and the deck provided a nice space to set up stations for our caterer. The list of vendors provided by Empire Eats made providing linens and any items needed easy to set up. The only suggestions we would offer is know in advance that this is the top floor of The Stockroom. If there are 2 events scheduled, you'll be sharing the only elevator with the other venue. Loading and unloading prior and after the event can be a bit tricky. There is no designated area loading zone. Be sure to ask in advance for a cart and it will be provided. Also, if you're having a summer event, know that it can be very hot. When the door to the deck is open, it compromises the A/C and it can be a tad bit warm.

It was elegant, yet not over the top. I also loved that they had a spacious patio, with beautifully strung lights that set a romantic mood. (The patio was also a perfect place for the younger kids to run around and get some energy out while the adults finished dinner.) But the beauty of the venue is not the only reason this venue was perfect. The staff here could not have been easier to work with and they really brought my wedding day vision to life. Marc and Janice are both pros at what they do and they made every request I had possible. Marc met with us multiple times to comb through the details and answer any questions or requests we had. And I felt incredibly comfortable and at ease when the wedding day did finally arrive. And for those who believe food is key to a great party: We knew we did not want crappy hotel food for our reception, so we stuck to visiting venues that had great reviews about their food - And the Garden on Millbrook was one of those places. We decided on the 3 entrée buffet which was made up of chicken florentine, brisket, and their signature shrimp and gouda grits. Along with the entrees, we had potatoes au gratin, steamed vegetables, rolls, a salad bar and coffee bar. Everyone raved about how good the food was! I know there is also the stereotype that the bride and groom never get to eat during their own wedding, but the staff here really takes good care of you and serves you separately to make sure that you get to eat. No hungry bride and grooms here! I could not be happier about the way our day turned out!

We hadn't even tasted the food at that point. Now that we have actually tasted the food, we're even more excited to be working with him. Everything was so delicious! Our photographer asked what other vendors we're using, and when I told her Marc's our caterer she said she loves him too! It's really nice to know our vendors enjoy working together, I think that shows a lot about their professionalism and quality of service. Our wedding isn't until August so I can't speak to the actual event yet, but Marc has already put in so much work and been so helpful I really wanted to give a review already! He responds so quickly to emails, it's like somehow his answer is already in my inbox as I'm hitting send. It's magic! He has offered really helpful support anytime I have questions about the menu and so many other things not at all related to the meal...scheduling, referrals, anything we ask, he's on it! It's very, very clear from his responses he truly knows what he's doing and yet he's incredibly tactful when offering suggestions. Anything he says is with a tone of leaving it totally up to us, just offering the benefit of his experience, which is exactly what I was hoping for. I'm really glad we booked with him and can't wait to enjoy his services on our big day!

I had seen an ad on FB for an event sponsored by Fever. It was a Halloweenish event so it looked liked something different to do to kick off Oct. Tickets have to be bought a head of time for a specific date & time. Chairs are set up in a dimly lit room with a bookshelf cabinet as the main focal point which was on the opposite end of the chairs. The bookshelf had spooky looking objects on it. Through out the hour & 1/2 of the show, you are given 4 different cocktails while one at a time a group of 5 adults take turns telling a ghost story as the others serve the coctails. Unfortunately The drinks were a bit watered down and didn't seem like they actually had alcohol in them. The drinks seemed random which I think it would make more sense if they matched the stories somehow or at least were in the actual story. The storytellers were dressed to match the spooky mood and some did better than others. I thought they were going to be Raleigh ghost stories and maybe they were but there wasn't enough local knowledge in the stories. Not sure if the event was worth the cost but it was something different. After the show the adults told the audience that their group of 5 does it all:sets the stage, does the lighting, the music, decorates, makes the drinks, serves them & provides the entertainment. After I heard this I have to admit I definitely felt ok paying the cost for the event. If you like local theater, this is a great idea for something different to do on a weekend night.
