There are a lot of food stands or kiosks out there that specialize in selling one type of dessert or another. I usually pay no attention since what they sell usually comes off as generic or just some new twist on something old to make it novel.
The Cakery is one of the few stands that restored my faith in this kind of establishment.
The owner started out baking and selling her goods in her own building, a condo somewhere in Ortigas. She eventually sold enough cakes and saved enough dough, as in cash, that she got to expand her business to Megamall.
The Cakery sells a wide assortment of cakes. Some familiar, others a little bit new, while others are completely novel.
Take the berry cake for example. It's a cake with different kinds of berries. It's something familiar enough that made me comfortable trying it while different enough to make it stand out.
The custard cream pie was the sweetest thing I got to try. I was a few bad decisions away from jumping a guy for his wallet so I could take home an entire pie with me, but decided against it knowing that going to jail for a pie wasn't worth throwing my future away.
Everything on her menu is great, but I'd have to put a spotlight on her keylime pie though. She specifically mentioned that out of all the bakeries and so forth here in Metro Manila, she has only ever encountered one other restaurant, or was it bakery, that ever sold this kind of pie. I took a taste and found it surprisingly delightful. It makes me wonder why I don't encounter more of this around the Metro.
So drop by and have a bite of some of these gourmet cakes and if you're lucky you might just meet the fine lady who owns this establishment. She's as sweet on the eyes as her cakes are to a man's palette. read more
