Just looking at this photo makes me want to rush to Kumori!

Cheesecakes rarely make my heart skip a beat, my eyes go wide and my cheesecake-filled mouth say "oh my God!" (sorry bad manners) but oh my God, Kumori's original half-baked cheesecake did just that. Soft, packed and so divinely flavored, the first bite felt like blissfully sinking my teeth into a cloud of cheese combined with everything good in this world. And mind you, I was only supposed to have just a bite (because I am a girl and always on a diet), but ended up having three. Fine, four! Seriously, sooooooo goooood! Thank you to my sister for dragging me to Landmark claiming that she was able to experience the best Japanese cheesecake in Manila there. Oh my God, it was, indeed, the best (way better than the Pablo's Cheesecake I had in Osaka). Especially at PHP48 a piece and PHP250 for a box of five, best deal too!

Local bakeshops must start to up the ante because many international bakeries are gaining foothold in the local market for breads and desserts. Take the case of Kumori Bakery. This brand is popular in Japan and it has recently opened its shop in the Philippines. This chic bakery sticks out like a sore thumb within Landmark Foodcourt not only because the kiosk is new and well-lighted, but also because the pastries on display all look very enticing. Who could resist the colorful breads that look like fruits? Even if I have a self-imposed moratorium on carbs and sweet treats, I just couldn't resist trying out at least one of their baked products. I decided to buy one of their bestsellers -- the Hanjuku Cheesecake Original. As I sunk my teeth into the cheesecake, I immediately fell in love with its soft and fluffy texture. It's like I'm biting on clouds which, incidentally, is called 'kumo' in Japanese. I will surely be back and, next time, I will not hold back.

I had never heard about Japanese bakeries before moving to Manila. In Brazil, we see lots of French ones, but the Japanese bakeshops didn't sprout all over yet. That's why I got so curious when I saw Kumori in front of Landmark Supermarket. I had just finished my grocery and was on my way to grab a taxi when I saw the yellow kiosk. The first thing that caught my attention was a tofu cheesecake. I suffer with my lactose intolerance, so I usually use tofu on my recipes when I cannot drink my lactase enzyme. At first, I got really excited about this cheesecake! However, the guy there told me their must-try was the bite-sized original Hanjuku Japanese cheesecake. I've decided to try it - even having to use some of Lactaid tablets. It should be worth it! Oh, my! It was the best decision I took. Japanese cheesecake is very different than the ones we are used to (American-style ones). I can't explain. It's just soooo soft and light and creamy and fluffy. Love at first bite! And it's very cheap considering the quality: less than 50 pesos! Try it. Really. You're in Asia, so it's time to try Japanese cheesecake instead of your everyday Western-style dessert :P

And yes, I do get a lot of, "But whyyy?" reactions from people. That aside, I do get occasional cravings -- days when I just really need something sweet to cap off a big meal or a reward after a long day. Purple Oven is the perfect place to satisfy my dessert desires. I love the Chocolate Campfire cake, it's rich, moist, chocolate cake that topped with marshmallow icing. MARSHMALLOW ICING! I suppose you could take a slice and sandwich it between graham crackers and call it a smore. For days when you just need a little sweetness, try the double chocolate chip cookie, choclate macademia cookie or chocolate dipped cookie (where literally have the cookie is dipped in chocolate). They're pricey at P60/cookie but they're a little bigger than my palm and the chocolate chips ooze out when you bite into the cookie. There is no scrimping on ingredients in Purple Oven. The products here would also make great presents. They're hefty and have the wow factor because of their packaging. The chocolate crinkles, lemon squares, brownies and revel bars would be great to share at the office while the cakes would be awesome to bring home to family or to impress in-laws. Enjoy!

We asked for refund, however, you mentioned that you can refund the amount paid for flower decorations. We even asked to even add at least delivery charge to the refund.... But still, only P800 for your mistake??? We feel that it is very unfair that we spent a lot on it, ordered it 5 days in advance, called everyday for update if you got the design, did our best to make communication work out on our end, and in the end a disaster. How could you let this happen? How could you give an empty birthday cake when we paid extra for each flower and mentioned the dedication? We are very disappointed that our order wasn't taken seriously. We hope other customers won't experience the same situation.

This caramel cake is not too sweet and has a light and fluffy chiffon base so you'll want to have another slice :3 Their cakes and other baked goods need to be pre-ordered at least a day before and picked up at their lovely home along Polaris St. Bel-Air, Makati. It's not convenient, but it's super worth the travel! I love how the staff can be accommodating sometimes especially when we just ordered on the day of pick up (oops), and words on the cake can be personalized (without character limit!). My family's usual order is the 9x12-inch caramel cake that's worth P1000 (with free personal message on cake and 1 candle). Not a bad deal when we know how much dedication and quality this homemade goodness is done (and taste) over the years. Highly recommend this to those who want a light cake for family and friends. Kudos to Costa Brava! ;)

I've also had their: *Purple Carousel chocolate cake - classic chocolate cake with these chocolate wafers on top *Mini Pecan Pie - not the consistency I prefer in a pecan pie but the flavor was still very good *Mini Chocnut Pie - light, could use a stronger chocnut flavor, I really liked the crust though *Cookies - I love cookies so I usually get 1 or 2 with whatever else I'm buying that day, theirs are crispy on the edges and chewy on the inside *Quiche Tinapa - Liked this a lot and just ate mine chilled, but I think it would be better to warm it a little at home

But Purple Oven's decadent revel bars changed that opinion pretty quickly! When I moved to the area, I was happy to find out that it's just one tricycle ride away from my condo (and I've abused that ever since). It's always been my go-to bakery for special occasions. Of course, the revel bars are always a party hit, as well as their cakes. But I think their cookies are one of the best I've tasted! (And i've tried alot, mind you.) The chocolate macademia cookies don't scrimp on either, and is absolutely mouthwatering, especially when they're just fresh out of the oven! (You can cheat this by putting it in the oven really quickly, at the lowest setting so you won't burn anything.) Purple Oven doesn't just do desserts either! They've got a pretty good selection of bread and quiches! Perfect for a lazy brunch at home. Just pop em in the oven the next day, and they go so perfectly with some coffee or tea.

And it doesn't help that they actual load a new batch of goodies in the oven every hour (with a schedule posted on the chalkboard of what's cooking by what time), I think I sat there for half a day and didn't even notice I've been there that long. Whether you're in for a savory treat or a sweet-tooth satisfier, they have so much to choose from. My top picks are still Grandma's Chocolate Cake which has layers of caramel between moist, rich chocolate cake topped with chocolate ribbons and the Banoffee Pie which has a pie crust filled with banana, cream and butterscotch. If you want just a quick bite, then try their cookie selection. I love the chocolate macadamia, very chocolatey and chunky and not too sweet.
